USS Essex by RGL - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/350 - PLASTIC - as she appeared in February 1944

Recommended Posts

Was she painted an evenly blue, or did she had some camouflage patten on top of that blue coat?

[edit: forget my question: the answer is in your first post :) ]

On my screen the blue really pops out: is that because of a badly calibrated screen, or was this navy blue that kind of bright blue?

Hi Greg,

I have been following your work.  I just completed the Lexington in 1/700. If I recall, only the Lex and Essex stayed in the overall MS21 sea blue.

I can say one thing, I really got to hate all that blue.  In 1/700, it was a bugger to keep track of all the small details until I started my washes.

I did notice in my research that along the starboard side, the paint seemed to fade to a flat finish that was a lighter shade.  This was probably due to all the direct sun exposure on all that surface area.  After weathering, I went in with a flat brush and added "touch up" areas to represent there areas may had been touched up while at sea.  Anything to break up all that blue.

Great work sir,

Scott

Very very blue; I can experiment a bit to what I’m happy with. This photo, which I’m pretty sure is from 1943 shows a lighter blue grey on the gun shield  compared to the “sea blue” behind it. I’m thinking this will probable approximate what I’m after.

I like your thinking.  Blue is such a tricky color when trying to pull it off a photo. Who knows if its due to the Kodachrome, faded from the weather, or how it was mixed and applied.  You should go with what your eye tells you.   I used the Navy Measure color codes more as a guide than a rule.

I also built the Enterprise as she may had appeared at Midway.  Talk about trying to figure out the correct gray or blue.  It made my head about to explode.

But its fun to try to experiment with these colors in order to put life into the model.

Ditto!  Looks like shes been in the Pacific exposed to sun, salt,  and countless attempts to retouch and fight the rust by deck apes.

Those interior shots of the hanger deck are so realistic yet at the same time haunting. She looks like even more of a ghost ship than the Graf Zeppelin did when you were building her. It is going to be amazing when you place the planes and possibly people in there to kill some of the echo!

Greg, you have truly captured the feel of the steel hull, the very being of the ship. A great job for us mere mortals to learn from.

Have a Merry and a Happy

Well I worked all over Christmas so I finally got some work done on the deck, the metal inserts for the deck joins, arrestor gear cables, elevator boundaries, tomorrow I’ll finish off the remaining 100 or so Tie down inserts and cable lifts and I can then mask and do the deck numbers. It’s a very blue deck which I will then have to weather which is a new learning experience but should be fun.

The ships cranes; photo one is how they are supposed to look, 1E777F45-C078-4F37-B76E-231E8346654E.thumb.jpeg.34e9dfcb0905cd834c8dd559d70f65cd.jpeg

the kit ones, (see grey blob) actually come with a crank which I cut off and put on the Pontos replacement which is on the fret but no instructions whatsoever. I had to change one of the tackle as the pontos kit one went somewhere into space. B871C5DB-7DD7-42AD-A2D6-26A4659156B5.thumb.jpeg.edd21094b8bcedbf489014d80d0e12de.jpeg

finally the winch controls which I built out of spares E9889A3F-0852-43D2-BE5E-46D4D3C42D92.thumb.jpeg.f47cea8f27ee51ba96beb9a1432233ae.jpeg
