Hello Shipmates

The planking is now all glued on and sanded, well I have to admit I have to go over it again with some 320 grit sand paper then the sanding is all finished on the deck yyyyyiiiiiipppppppppeeeeeeeeee.

What I will do next is coat it up with Danish oil or should I use varnish, will some wood glue to the deck if I use Danish Oil? (help).

ah brings back memories from 23 years ago! when planking billings hulls don't follow the same method of planking as some other kits, taper the planks at bow and stern from deck level down- i ues this method and have never used filler pieces- when planking finished run white wood glue between planks then when hardened start sanding- my hms terror blog is on the planking stage and i will add a couple of pics here of finished fd10 and billings marie jeanne which has been sanded down and waiting priming.1477219174_Fd101.thumb.jpg.fa4f3eafe6af526db38d91d06e1191e6.jpg635276345_Marie_jeanne1.thumb.jpg.a6ce69d45869a8497d7b10379acfe517.jpg

hope this helps with planking

Hello Keith

Yes a big help thank you so much.

At what point did you start to taper the planks, the 2nd or 4th one down, did you use nails also and did you start at the top then the bottom and meet in the middle of the hull.

Love your builds.

Hello Yves

Thank you also for the comment.

I have to say after looking at the photos I could have trimmed the planks a wee bit better (damn photos hahaha).

Good to see you back it again Jo. It seems you are much more confident so far than you were in your first build. Congratulations.

Hello Imagna

Thank you it is good to be back again.

I think I have said this before on my other build (still not finished haha) I don't like hull planking that much; way past my skills, more so this one.

The back of the hull is very curved upwards and I have no idea how you experts do that sort of planking.

I have decided to plank it a different way.

thanks Jo, you have done a great job with the deck- i worked from the top down using brass pins which were then removed after the glue had hardened then added filler in any gaps and sanded down.i start tapering from where the frames start to narrow- on this one i started tapering from 4th frame in from the bow and terminated the top most plank around where the mizzen mast is with the sternwards taper starting just after the fullest middle frame - this allowed the next plank to start sweeping up the counter i also soak the strips for a few hours in water to stop them cracking when bent and use wood adhesive as opposed to cyano- hope this makes sense!

Hello all

I have been putting the hull planking off, more so as this is the finished plank.

I soaked some planks in warm water for about 5 hours, I then used my electric plank bender to bend the plank(s).

When I did the first one it split at the back part of the ship, but not that bad, on the other side it was worse it just about split in half.

Anyway I got 3 on one side and 2 on the other side, all I can say is bring on the wood filler and it's a good job it is going to be painted hahaha.

looking through build logs,  you'll see how folks deal with planking.    planking with whole strip is probably the hardest way to do it,  since tapering will need to be done to some degree.  scale planking is better,  because your not having to deal with the entire length.  the planks are cut to lengths that are with the scale length of the model.......this takes some figuring out.   to make this approach easier,  I tend to cut the planking two,  to three bulkheads long and stagger the butts.  using this method,  the plank can be shaped the way it will fit on the model,  keeping with a fairly straight line.   it is common to find that the bow and stern,  in relation to coverage,  is not as wide as the mid ship.  so,  to equalize the number of planks it takes to cover the hull,  tapering needs to be done.........making the plank narrower on one end.......the ends that terminate at the bow or stern stem.  you will see that some folks like to 'band' their hulls,  to better isolate the field that they are focusing their planking.  one can get a better job of it....they fill in that area and then move on to the next.......and so on.  the only real drawback to scale planking,  is the bending that needs to be done at the stern.........depending on the ship your modeling,  the bow planks may need to be fashioned,  but the stern is much more critical due to the counter.   the contour is hard to navigate,  while keeping the line at the same time.

the type of wood is also a consideration.......softer woods will conform better than harder woods.   I know it sounds like a redundant comment,  but it relates to how different folks plank their hulls.   some will use a hot iron to aide in bending planks......some will set them up in jigs and allow them to dry.  I do the latter........but I also do my planking with the wood damp as well.  where I use Obechi { a soft wood},  dampened,  it is quite flexible and conforms with hardly any instances of splitting or splintering.  being damp,  I feel that the glue bonds better to it,  because the glue is better able to absorb into the wood.

planking can be fun.......I recently planked two hulls.   I gotta laugh,  because even though the two hulls were the same,  I could not plank them the same way....the second one gave me fitz!   this not only accounts the wood I used on the second one,  but how old the wood was....very hard to work with petrified wood :D    don't rush to the filler....sand the hull first and see what you have to work with.   most of the time,  you may need only a little filler here and there.  your doing some good work.......I'm glad to see your back to the table.

I yam wot I yam!

Hello Keith and Denis

Thank you both, you are both so kind in trying to help me out with the planking.

As it is my second build I am still trying to learn how to do things, but I have to say I do lose my temper when things go wrong and that is most of the time haha.

I hope I will improve by the time I purchase a dearer kit than the ones I have now.

Again thank you for your help gentlemen.

Jo

Hello all

As per normal for me I made a big mistake with the planking at the back of the ship.

I was talking to the nice man next door about it, he came round and had a look.

He asked me to cut the wood out down to the deck, clean it up, he said looking at the instruction you have missed the bottom of the hand rails so glue them in and I will go to my son's house to get something.

He came back with some white plastic ??, he then got some white paper and put it on the back and drew a line round the gap.

He asked me to cut it out and place it on the plastic then draw a line round it, cut it out and see it it fits.

It was a wee bit big but he said that will be Ok as you can sand that down after.

He asked me to hold it on and drop some CA glue on the top to glue it to the two bits I had just glued on, when I have done that do the bottom and sides, with that he went home.

Yes that sounds easy, well it was till I split the plastic done one side, are well I filled that with some Tamiya white putty.

I still have to finish sanding down and then it will be ready for painting yyyyyeeeeeeessssssssssss.

Hello Keith

Thank you my friend for the comment I do appreciate it.

By the way you know them bits of wood I asked you about, well you was correct.

I was looking at the rigging plans and right at the bottom of the page you can just make out a drawing (they must have run out of ink haha) I had to get a magnifying glass to make it out.

Stay safe my friend.

Hello all

I have now primed the planks on the inside above the deck with white primer, but I found some gaps so they was filled and then re-primed.

I have also added the rubbing rail to the outside of the hull; this also has been primed but with a brown primer.

Next is a wee bit of filling to do then a good sand down and another coat of brown primer.

Sorry about the mess on the deck and the overspray on the white, this will be sorted out when I get to the finishing coats.

Thank you Keith for the PM it was very helpful.

Hello Keith

Thank you, yes sanding down is not my favorite job in the world, but I am looking at it this way, as I have no fingernails now I am saving on the cost of nail varnish hahahahaha.
