Looking good Jo

I have a love and great interest in these old working ships and the men and women that sailed on them and who's lives were so close linked to these ships and the sea for their livelyhood.

This looks like it will be a beautiful model when done.  I have always wanted to try making sails.  When you fair the hull you will be really happy you took the extra time to beef up the bulkheads either with some scrap wood or filling in the areas with balsa as others have said.  Fairing the hull is tricky enough as it is and you can easily break the bulkheads as they are.  Don't ask me how I know this!

Hi Jo!! Getting caught up here. You have come a long way since I last stopped by. It looks like you solved your weak spot issue. Thinned epoxy or thin CA can solve many issues. Luies idea of gluing a couple of battens on with pva would have given you some additional insurance until you were ready to add in your additional structure.

Either way great job.

Looks like you've got the weak spot pretty much sorted. Well done.

Looking forward to further progress.

Hello Shipmates

Just a small update, I have glued the strips of wood round the inside of the bulwarks, I think this is the edge of the deck planking as they are on the same level.

Also this helps reinforces the weak spot at the stern, I also have two more strips of wood to be glued in that area also so it will make it more stronger.

I guess my invite to the party got lost in the mail. 😿

I must be fashionably late.

Great start Jo, I'm sure you will do a cracker jack job on this build too.

Anyhow, the best parties are always in the kitchen, or should I say galley.

Looks great!  As someone who built this kit, it is very fun to see it being built by another. Your frame looks nice, nice work!

Hello shipmates

I have just about finished sanding the balsa wood filler blocks on one side.

I have to say it seems like it has taken me months to just do one side when it was only a couple of days on and off.

Anyway I hope you all have a nice Christmas and a prosperous 2020.

Hope Santa brings you all some new kits and tools.

Hello all

Just a wee update, I decided to fill the bow part of the hull also as I cannot see that the planks will be secure by gluing them to a small area of the keel.

I have not finished sanding the stern filler blocks down yet as I am not sure if the planks finish each side of the keel or in the middle of the keel  HELP.

Looks really, really good Jo!  Don't panic about the planking just yet, you're doing a stellar job so far, seems like your norm, just keep up what you're doing.

at the stern, the planks will meet on top of the keel stem.  usually,  Billing will supply rabbits for the stems....surprised that there aren't any for the bow,  in this case.   to make it easier to plank,  Billings supplies a curved piece that would fit over the stern area.   it would likely end where you inserted the balsa,  but leaving enough of a bulkhead lip,  that the planking can terminate on it.   it is possible that you can scratch make one of these parts.

for an example of this.....here is what I did on my build of the Progress.   very easy to make:

Hi, Jo.   I am building the same kit.  I have finished the hull, and I am currently making the sails. The hull went together reasonably easily, but I struggled with the deck layout, as the instructions are very poor, and I have the same problem with the rigging.

Of the things that you have discussed in your posts; I didn't use any extra bulkheads, but my hull was made in two halves, joined when fully planked. This did make the planking easier.

You mentioned dyeing the sailcloth. I tried this, aiming for the customary tanned look, and found it came out a different shade on either side. I then went to  a shop which sold cloth, and bought some the right colour for a tenth of the price of the dye.

One other thing, which may be a bit into the future for you, but I will mention because the rigging is in my mind at the moment. Some of the details on the sail plan are  just plain wrong, such as attaching the main topsail to the topmast with mast hoops, which would mean that the sail could never be lowered below the topsail housing.  Also some of the mast fittings shown would prevent the topmast being lowered. So I am treating them as a basis for negotiation, not as instructions.

I hope that you have fun with her, it's a pretty hull. As someone said she is currently still afloat, working for charter out of the Faroe Islands, called the 'Johanna'   Del.

Hello all

Sorry I have not posted for sometime but will be back soon.

Del2, thank you for posting with the info on my little ship it is much appreciated.

Unfortunately this is only my second wooden ship build, (still have not finished the first one yet ha-ha), but I don't know the names of the parts of the ships but I will learn with the help of people like yourself and others on this forum.

With the dyeing of the sails, my plan was to dye them let them dry and then tie them up in a ball and re-dye them, I hope to get a weathered look.

You said your hull came in two halves, I am not sure if mine is an older kit or not but I am happy with it the way it is, as for the instructions yes they are very, very BAD.

I have looked for your log but cannot find it are you doing a log on your build.

Hi Jo!

Glad to see you on the forum,  I would be lying if I said I haven't missed you.  I hope to see some more posts.

Just about all my builds have stalled, mostly because I am reluctant to use my airbrush.

Jolene,

Hope you and yours are doing well. I know that France has been hit pretty hard by the corona virus.

Nice work on your new build. Now we have plenty of time for ship modeling!

Hello everyone.

Sorry long time no post, I have been working on another project.

So it is back to my ships again, I decided not to do the hull planking yet so I have started the deck planking.

I will take me another 4 day on and off to finish it, then I will give it a good sanding down.

After the deck it will be the hull planking.
