HMS Victory by rkwz - AIRFIX - Scale 1:180 - First plastic ship build

Nearly finished with the fore channels, worked out a better way to keep the deadeyes straight by clamping them with self closing forceps.

 

One more channel to go, then I'll need to cement the masts into place, finish mods for the tops and then tackle the shrouds (gulp)...

Still have to tackle the pendants around the masts before the real fun begins. This is my first go at seizing threads together. 

 

Really need 4-5 helping hands getting this done... I used 2mm styrene tubes sliced off with a scalpel and wound black thread around it, then seized using 0.18mm black fishing wire. 

Seized and placed over the foremast starboard before port side. A little glue and an assortment of weights to shape the thread.



My main mast snapped recently (could be the kids) and I had to glue it back and possibly adjust again when the shrouds and stays are rigged ... Could someone please confirm the mast-deck angle from a side view (90 deg?)

Being a newbie, I forgot to stiffen the thread at the point where the burton pendants loop over the mast. The result (see main mast) looked totally unnatural unless it was a very windy day 😁.

 

Fixed this problem with a second run on the fore mast as you can see. Looking a little better but still the threads are a little curved.

 

A touch of paint on the pendants to pass them off as wood.

I'm a little paranoid about access before the shrouds go on. Next I'll get some blocks attached to the eyebolts around each mast.

Fairly productive night, attached 17 blocks to various points along the deck and stern.

All this before I broke the main mast again trying to hang weights off the burton pendants... 😭

I fashioned this "cleat" out of 0.5mm copper wire which could be strong enough to handle the tension when wrapping thread around them later. 

 

If anyone has a better idea or option, please don't hold back!

It's a painstaking process rigging the shrouds.

So far, I've found the method that works for me is to mark with paint the position for the deadeyes during a dry fitting run (after seizing the loop that goes over the mast), I figured I would have to "tar" the shrouds later anyway 😁

 

Different coloured paint to differentiate the shroud positions.

Example of a finished shroud. Seizing is becoming faster and easier now that I've gotten the hang of it. Fishing line may not be realistic but it works at this scale.

A little dry fitting again using copper wire to hold it in place albeit loosely.

Now before I get too excited and get ahead of myself as has occurred many many times prior, I decided to stop here with the first 4 shrouds aft.

 

After dry brushing the deadeyes and once they are dry, I will rig these in place with beige thread just to see if I'm on the right track. 

 

I am a little worried the foremast is beginning to tilt back at a slight angle (I had broken this too when I dropped the ship a few days ago) so I'll need to tread carefully when tensioning the lanyards.

Then I realised the sequence of shrouds over the mast head is the other way round (fore to aft)... 🤦‍♂️

Just a little update (haven't given up yet!). Still battling on with shrouds.

 

Once I get the fore and main stays in place, I should then be able to tension the lanyards and adjust the foremast which is slightly leaning aft.

 

Just counted my deadeyes and realised I only have 2 left over for the bowsprit rigging. Looks like another top up purchase is in order...

Had a busy night fitting the bobstays. The foremost one in particular took longer than the rest.

I noticed there are some variations to blocks used for the bobstays. Gil Middleton's Victory Bible uses deadeyes but since I'm all out of deadeyes, I decided to make my own.

 

Heart blocks were made by slicing off O tubes of styrene (2.5mm), gently shaped using pliers, glued with CA to keep it's shape, then painted to simulate wood.

How tall, long and wide?  The complete model.  I have the black pearl 1/72 (50cm X 47Cm X 9Cm) and I want the HMS Victory airfix to make a Custum to the HMS ENDEAVOR of pirates of the Caribbean.  greetings from Mexico

About 60cm L x 50cm H (don't know the width yet as I haven't placed the spars yet). The hull is 39cm long.

 

Wonder if the Victory with it's 104 guns would be an unfair match against the Black Pearl? 🤔 Then again ... The undead!

I just ordered the HMS victory airfix and I hope it is a good scale (in real life the pearl and endeavor are 50 M and 60 M long respectively) your work will inspire my project a lot, just  I don't think I get that much for the custum, it's hard to get them to send parts to Mexico.  It will be a great scene to put the HMS Victory vs The Pearl !!  This is my first model and it lacks a rival!

Made some progress with the main and fore stays and their respective preventer stays.

Seizing the rope around the main mast

My stay mouse cheat (slightly thinner thread wound several times around and shaped with a drop of CA)

 

Now to research how to tie the snaking line across the stays... Advice please for a newbie ! 🙏

Wow !! It's looking amazing!  Now what I see seems to be that it is larger than the pearl (1/72) I will certainly inspire my custom of the HMS Endeavor, it is a pity that DHL delayed the delivery of my model for 3 more days.  Do you have any preview of the candles?

Did you mean the stern lanterns? Here's a pic...no work done on them yet as I just can foresee these flimsy things snapping off throughout the rigging process! I'll leave that to the last along with the rest of the cannons and gun port covers.

I was referring to these parts (indicated in the photo) the rig is a huge problem, I used kola loka glue.  if the model has pulleys use them in your favor so that the rig is tense

Oh I see. I'll be taking a risk and will be using the kit supplied masts as I have little to no experience working with wood. 

 

I am doing my best to follow Hackney's rigging guide with the system of blocks. It has given me an appreciation of the beauty of how these period ships were constructed...every step in the rigging process seems to have an important function in keeping the ship together. 

 

Meanwhile I will be practicing tying clove hitches and pondering how I can get the ratlines done without making a mess of it.

Whilst waiting for my COVID-19 test results, I keep myself occupied by tying the ratlines in... 

Also I finally received my copy of Longridge's book from Booktopia after my first order went missing in the post 😠.

 

What a gem of a book. So much detail and analysis of the Victory!

Well, it took a while but after tying over 1900 clove hitches, I feel it was worth the effort after all.

 

All the while knowing this is the easy bit as the upper mast ratlines will come later...

 

And incidentally my test results came back negative 😪

What a pleasure it is to see you putting so much effort into this build, I continue to be impressed with your work.

I'm sure you are already putting ideas together for your next build. Many here would encourage you to 'progress' to something wooden. You're fast approaching the rigging stage having already done most of the work on the shrouds and ratlines. It's this area where the 'faff' aspect will come to your attention and try your patience. Looking forward to that.

For what it's worth, may I suggest you give the Airfix 'Bounty' some consideration. Being 1:87 it's twice the scale of the 'Vic'. Like the AOTS book of the 'Vic', the Bounty title emphasises the accuracy of the Airfix kit.

You will have the option of the Bounty (just a few guns to mount), or a simple kit bash and build the previous merchantman incarnation of the ship, 'Bethia' (no guns at all!).

Both versions have full ship rig at a scale where each and every detail could be accomplished. No doubt you would learn all there is to rigging any ship model. That would be the value of that build.

And of course it wouldn't break the bank.

Thanks, Shipman... There is still so much I don't know and I look forward to each stage/challenge and gain more experience through this build. I realise I have saved a significant amount of time and frustration with a plastic hull but do plan to start a wooden build albeit a less ambitious one after I complete the Victory.

 

Thanks for the tip for the Airfix bounty. Will definitely consider that on my to do list.
