HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Edwardkenway- 1:48

The weather was kind last Sunday, so Winnie and I got outside with a couple of sanding blocks.20220305_111616.thumb.jpg.a5ee620ff4e769c4b7fc134a1278c207.jpg

There's still a bit to do20220305_111634.thumb.jpg.4c0ec84ecde462dd3287d0e00a16b3e6.jpg

but she's getting better 20220305_111652.thumb.jpg.39aacc8362f3f77df02178d0bb589ae4.jpg

it will need another going over with finer grit20220305_111732.thumb.jpg.5677c497be4a904694f0fc5183ecaed2.jpg

and a bit more refining in certain areas20220305_111801.thumb.jpg.ca2bb50c7935e4a41201e843a879af29.jpg

thanks for looking in, the comments and likes, it is much appreciated.

I'm being able to find time to get back working on Winnie,  so a  small update is due, sanding the hull continues, I keep finding areas that need a better finish.

20220430_104209.thumb.jpg.9e287e169d0020effe6ba8f1cdc42026.jpg

I have started to fit the wales, hopefully she will look better and more shipshape when these are finished and painted.

With hindsight I wish I'd ordered some of Vahur's lovely black hornbeam for the wales.

Thanks for your continued support everyone.

Also for the likes.

With the bank holiday giving me a three day weekend, I completed the starboard wales and gave them two thin coats of dull black20220503_182921.thumb.jpg.8406c477f1aaf2a1b7a44ff017e4ba11.jpg

I still have the port side to fit.20220503_182943.thumb.jpg.88ef322acbcc6d4c404aba9503cc2dce.jpg

I have thinned the planks down towards the stem. The blackstrake will cover the brush slips luckily😏

and a touch of filler at the stern.

What is the best filler for colour matching AYC? Any suggestions will be welcome .

Thank you Chuck, for the kind and encouraging comment.

The port side wale is fitted and painted, although it will need another coat at least.

No bollards as yet, all the sets I've made I did not like enough to fit them, there's more in the pipeline.

Blackstrakes next, then the much anticipated, with a fair amount of trepidation, Q galleries,😬 I'm hoping I'm worried about nothing, and with my slow, slow work rate, they will come together!

Thanks to all for looking in and the likes.

Hi, I started the stern by dry fitting the transom, the whole thing didn't line up🤔🤨and I decided to throw it away and cut a new one. I did not cut any of the windows into the new version.

With the mk2 clamped to the stern, I marked where the windows go and cut 1.5mm inside the line20220514_104855.thumb.jpg.00e25f41197de74d50c81761b4ff739d.jpg

it lines up better 20220514_104932.thumb.jpg.81136f8f72663388da1edf5eedcb7053.jpg

a bit of tweaking here and there, plus the roundels and arch windows to cut out.

I'm happier🙃

thanks for the likes and all.

Quarter galleries are started, I'm so glad I purchased the laser cut parts for this chapter😊20220519_221828.thumb.jpg.0ca9c4ca0b523d587bf332c9dac8335a.jpg

note to self is do more dry fits before gluing 🙄20220519_221838.thumb.jpg.e8c51192baf54f42922cd38b09a9cb13.jpg

some sanding to do, but I'm pleased with myself upto now😉

Honestly though most credit must go to Chuck's very detailed instructions!

So, the QGs are progressing, with  some very cautious ungluing and re-gluing, the windows are so fragile 😳20220522_212215.thumb.jpg.4792d089cd1e8b10b6aab45ce6014e77.jpg

I'm totally in awe of everyone who's already done this part, and made it look effortless.20220524_215537.thumb.jpg.22e89dc210db78f6d7ecba4d4d030cb2.jpg

the roof is not glued on, just placed on to see.20220527_215950.thumb.jpg.d505fd80bd74befb916595ce9017fe87.jpg

the opposite side is better, and with a touch of colour.

I have several areas of planking, mainly between the gunports that have been, or need removing, mostly like the two in the above photo.

But I'm moving forward on the build😊

thanks for the likes and looking in.

Looking really good. The windows were definitely a struggle, lots of test fitting, sanding and broken ones until I got it right.

Thank you nzreg and Scrubby, and thanks for the likes.

I spent a couple of hours on the roofs, shaping and tiling them.20220602_132420.thumb.jpg.f999441186960ec41d763b0ce3a13da9.jpg

I painted them in tamiya rubber black as it not jet black, and drybrushed with dark grey.20220602_132439.thumb.jpg.a9f21ce3f86e87d3d6a5774e962fbefe.jpg

That looks great, Edward!  So far, Chapter 3 has been my favorite part of this build.  Those quarter galleries and the transom decorations are so much fun to build.

Thanks Jack and Matt, I'm feeling the same about them, definitely enjoying them more than I thought I would!20220613_163046.thumb.jpg.5dab2e88fd47c80a99bf33477163a95d.jpg

I removed the moldings in the previous post as I didn't like them, made some more and started on the columns 20220613_163055.thumb.jpg.d1aa95cba100af551d2d0f6ff6f21f7f.jpg

The top and bottom pieces were a bit of a test for my eyes!

Thanks for the likes, comments and looking in.

Cheers

Edit: can the carvings be retro fitted after everything else is done??

To carry on with the QG's, I needed the frieze printed, my printer seems to shrink them, not by much but enough for them to not fit.

So off to my local library and got 3 copies of each for the princely sum of £1(about $1:20)20220621_215658.thumb.jpg.9157e4780adba03a7a760d60d0494056.jpg

the first dry fit, the lower frieze is tacked on with tiny bits of blu-tak.20220621_215941.thumb.jpg.62eed1ec3eb52c94df6f10be7df3d9f4.jpg

just to see what it looks like with the lower molding on.20220621_220026.thumb.jpg.d9ceae383f1827e2ed2a17640dccc739.jpg

I also have done the very fiddly and frustrating job of the fancy rail on top of the gallery roof20220618_221336.thumb.jpg.3c4dacefe616a933e6306ba75b5a2dc0.jpg

I think I must have taken extra care placing the decorative inserts as the spares Chuck provides are still on their fret.20220618_221448.thumb.jpg.8c7f956326b22fb16d36fe26d1db3c85.jpg

as per instructions the roof is not glued down yet.

Thanks for the likes, looking in and comments, all encouragement is appreciated.

Cheers.

Very nice…your model will look dramatically different when the friezes are added.  Its a real milestone moment of the project.

Thanks to everyone for the encouraging comments! It's really appreciated 🙂

I think I've done with chapter 3 and with hindsight I find I was wrong to feel nervous about it!

With Chuck's instructions and the amazing laser cut parts, even I have a decent looking stern and  quarter galleries!

20220709_120050.thumb.jpg.db0878c9cb5ebada9d92a02e0028c73a.jpg

Unfortunately at the moment my budget has no spare for the beautiful carvings but they are definitely on the list near the top.20220709_120234.thumb.jpg.893aa83e40a84c90242f8534f58ae7a7.jpg

The sternpost still has to be fitted. 20220624_212857.thumb.jpg.354c97b8ff21a26a16f51fa1279259ca.jpg

I'm going to be taking a break from Winnie for a while and do some more work on my lifeboat.

Also I'm wondering wether to purchase chapter 4 or try my hand at making them myself.

As always thankyou for the likes, comments and having a look.

You’d be a braver man than me to attempt scratch building, it will be challenging enough using the laser cut parts.  The stern looks great, we’ll done!

It seems I'm not as brave as I thought🤭😂. I chickened out and bought chapters 4&5 😁

20230104_213134.thumb.jpg.6720889d988c4af5d1e1363c059d447b.jpg

I couldn't help myself, I had to see if the false deck fitted,  apart from a bit of chiselling the corners of the bow bulkheads, it looks like it is fine.

There may be a bit of fine tuning.

Thanks for looking in, the likes and encouraging comments.

They still require a lot of care and fitting, you’re not chickening out just taking a only slightly less challenging approach, plus you get to develop a new skill…char removal 😁

No shame in laser cut pieces. I’d rather focus all my effort at making them fit well. Even though everything is laser cut, each piece still requires much attention to detail. Your Winnie is looking good, it’s going to start coming together now and then you can look forward to guns!

Thank you gentlemen.

Chapter 4 has started, the two sub platforms have been planked, and the framing dry fitted. Once I've sanded the sub decks and give a couple of coats of WOP I shall begin fitting the pieces for the gratings*.
