Whew! Well done, Edward. You have the hands of a surgeon! Glad the operation was a success.

Congrats on extracting the offending planks Edward.  They would have bothered you every time you looked at it.

That’s quite clever, removing planks without damaging others. I’m sure you are happier with the result.

With the remove and replace work done, I gave the whole deck another good sanding. 20230224_170419.thumb.jpg.49f6893815058ef50f77bb17d4431286.jpg

and a coat of WOP 20230224_170442.thumb.jpg.31f59638934436c37b47bf486a0d2741.jpg

As can be seen (or not, as intended) the remedial planking worked.  No unsightly overly dark planks😊20230224_170449.thumb.jpg.9b4510ca69d84067094629e50fecd3f1.jpg

I still need to do the detailing of the patners and the waterway. I yet to find a satisfactory method of shaping the waterway. I shall try and get these jobs started over the weekend, then onwards to Chapter 5.

Thanks once again to all who gave advice and removal methods, all of which helped enormously.

Also for the likes, comments and popping in.

Cheers

Edward, that looks beautiful! A bit of a stressful detour for sure but an outcome to be proud of and I’m hoping you are happy with. I certainly would be!

Very nice looking deck. The result is definitely worth the effort to replace those planks. Well done!

Nicely done Edward! Perhaps you should have been a surgeon!

Thanks, I don't think I'd have the nerve to be a surgeon, that's why I became a bricklayer😁

With the deck done and finally just going with something approaching a quadrant profile for the waterways, I've moved on to the rudder.IMG20230310200205.thumb.jpg.39365aff0fba5c66fc868177370f5b82.jpg

I had a mishap with topmost bracket on the sternpost, as in breaking it getting it from the fret🙄.

With the hole in the counter drilled, I fitted the cabin benches.IMG20230310200025.thumb.jpg.3f606fcbe84817b81acc612d2b2f9c6d.jpg

Also a start be was made on the gun port lids. Inbetween all this I'm also making up some eyebolts and split rings. I tried Glenn's (glbarlow) method for the eyebolts, not a great success for me, I could not make them consistent, so I went back to the twist method.

Thanks for all the comments, likes and dropping by. All is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Looking good Edward! You are moving along indeed, you’ll be past me next! Haha. Gun ports are fun, I spent a lot of time trying to get them right. Next time I build gun ports I decided that I will do them during the planking process and use the same planks as I'm using on the hull so they match better. It looks like you’re off to a good start on your ports.

I know what you mean. I saved all the offcuts from the hull planking, even the very short ones, now I'm glad I did not throw them out.

I'm definitely having the ports open as a couple of them are very oddly shaped🤔

Smart move. I quickly realized that I should have done that. I made it work but it just would have been better to take care of it early on.

it is nice that they remain open except for the four (2 at the bow and stern), its an offer of forgiveness for one’s gunport assembly sins! Lol.

Just a small update, I've dry fitted a couple of ring boltsIMG20230311204402.thumb.jpg.7ba5ccd9316a88ef3f0cd72539e42ffa.jpg

Just to see what they look like on the deckIMG20230311204345.thumb.jpg.d117c77bdf6467fc4b9ce6619e02d3ca.jpg

I've used brass wire at .5mm, which according to the  conversion chart is equivalent to 24 gauge, and blackened IMG20230311204249.thumb.jpg.25d92ee149c0b68dbe782b53adc384c6.jpg

If I'm honest, I'm doing these, just so I can put off making the port lid hinges. I'm not sure how or where to start with those, even though I've read and reread the hinge bit in the monograph 🤷😬😕.

Any pointers be will be gratefully received.

Thanks once more for your comments, likes and visiting.

Cheers

Cheers Dave E.

Not wanting to put it off any longer, I sat down with some brass strip and a flat file. The following results may not be perfect, but for a first attempt, well.....IMG20230312163647.thumb.jpg.8e9132ac05ed560de6db8bf1f444a7c2.jpg blackened makes them look a tad betterIMG20230312172249.thumb.jpg.7754d63d705380845a61a4510eb37e89.jpg

IMG20230312172413.thumb.jpg.fa2148b5c08410be399d61216077e90e.jpg

Need to make some small eyebolts and split rings now.

New skills being learnt, as I would have gone off the peg and purchased them before this build.

To everyone looking in, commenting and giving the thumbs up, many thanks.

Cheers

Thanks to all for the encouraging comments.

Over the last week or so, I've made eight hinges, only 12 more to go, but I've only got enough brass strip for 9. The search is on for some more strip.

4 gun port lids have had their hinges fitted

IMG20230328132856.thumb.jpg.ef50ccf505c68fd93797d8b0eea23d58.jpg

I still need to make and fit the pivot for the hinges and remove the molding where the hinge will sit.

An order of .8mm wire has arrived, so I will make the larger ring bolts.

Thank you everyone who has commented, and for the likes, or for looking in.

Cheers
