The clerk of the cheque's yacht of Sheerness by paulsutcliffe - 1/35 - taken off may 1757 - POB - NMM plans

Recommended Posts

The wife bought me these plans last Christmas after seeing me looking at them on the NMM website, last week before Xmas she asked me where were they and why hadn't I built it yet????

I had actually copied the plans and made bulkhead patterns

215848603_20191224_1155071.thumb.jpg.f02f9d8f3879719c6a8841b46b9066bf.jpg

The plans appear to be at 1/32 but the stem of the boat is missing so full length isn't known however extending the lines and using the deck plan a reasonable assumption can be made1218049925_20191224_1225071.thumb.jpg.4a399a3fb928ce7054556f88578025ad.jpg

A false keel was made from ply along with the bulkheads, the ship plans say longboat in the notes but it is fully decked with a state room, and fireplace below deck and a large capstan and large windlass, sliding bowsprit gives the impression of a cutter rig and layout so that's what im aiming for, I've gone for bulkheads as there's no framing plan and as its full decked out I can show some nice deck planking hopefully

There is a little anomaly on the plan though  that im not sure what it is, the deck plan shows a square but the profile shows sort of mounting shape if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it?? Obviously going to be some time before I get there !

Because of the position of the square 'thing' on deck, I'll say it is the galley chimney. It happens to be in line with a bulwark mounted cleat, presumably for the fish davit. (The former inboard fixture is in red ink, the outboard in black). Nice subject!

Thanks Druxey, I cant see a galley anywhere on the lower deck but there is a fireplace for the state room, you can see the chimney and base plate on the picture above. I'm guessing that this ship might have had other purposes than just ferrying the clerk around, maybe anchor hoy or the like, due to the large capstan and windlass. Could a mounting like this have been used for the fish davit when hauling an anchor???

Would they have needed a galley if just being used in the port confines??

Thanks

Without a higher resolution image of the area in question, I can't say, Paul. I agree with you about the heating stove for the Great Cabin. If she was a part-time anchor hoy, she would have  avery bluff bow and a large davit projecting forward. But, with the missing bow end of the plan....

The full plan, as you can see a large windlass at the front but no davit??? The captains cabin is also under the fore deck with not a lot of room because if the state room I guess, which also isn't exactly large either but heated

A little milder weather today as already mentioned by Keithaug, so managed to spend a few hours out in the garage, I spent a few hours add ing planks on the port side under the Wales, the wife came into the garage and I moved the light around and saw the planks from a different angle and lighting, ripped the lot of and came inside forma glass of wine, I obviously made a slight error on the First one and then compounded it by carrying on, which meant they all had to come off, ergo no pictures and I will have to redo them tomorrow afternoon weather permitting

I'd forgotten how easy it was to single plank on bulkheads, not!!! Finally managed to get some work in with slightly warmer weather although very wet

Hull planking complete except for the garboard which I've left off for now so the dust can drop out the bottom, Wales and faux frames, also painted inside the cockpit and transom in readiness for the cockpit planking

I was originally going to trim out the bulkheads but have mow decided against that as most of the inside wont be viewable, I am going to make the fancy stairs down into the bedspace and state room

I have added deck and state room beams and carlings for the deck fittings, capstan, gratings etc, now cutting some cherry planks and lining with Black paper for the state room roof

Cherry roof completed and has had three coats of sealer, sanded inbetween with 400 grit, plansheer added around three sides so far, I also lined the front of the cabin with mahogany

20200302_165339.thumb.jpg.ab818a13b51275b75be4d5c5aac49aae.jpg

I also gave the inside of the cox's cockpit a freshen up after planking the floor, bases for the fireplace chimney and capstan also added

The front edge of the roof still needs trimming but im happy with the colour that has come out after sealing, polishing with wire wool should bring out the sheen.

So work was shut down last Friday, plenty of time in the garage, and we have had some nice weather to boot, although a chilly wind

I got the sliding top for the cabin entrance completed, the strange shaped piece that was discussed above is also completed, looking at the plans again there is a box underneath that goes down to the keel, I'm wondering if it is a rope locker similar to a shot locker, there is a small grating in the middle, also added some bolts and metalwork to the capstan

Whilst finishing the deck furniture I started thinking about the rigging, I was originally going to do a full cutter rig but now I'm not sure, I don't think this boat would have ever left the dockyard and wouldn't need that much rig and I'm thinking a simple fore and aft longboat rig would be more suitable, any suggestions??

current state of play after 5 days in the garage, working on the door to the accommodations and trying to work out how to make the curved chimney as its quite large, I made a temporary one out of basswood but it needs to be hollow to look good

Coming along quite nicely Paul 👍, glad to hear your weather is warming. It's good to have some extra workshop time but not under current circumstances, may this end soon for the sake of everyone on Earth.

It's warming up here as well, just a few days away from putting the battery in the lawn tractor and start working our little piece of heaven into shape after what seems a very long winter.

I think you are dead right on that one Keith, three months I reckon, so after another day in paradise, 4 degrees in the shed

I suddenly realised while I was flying along on the deck I hadn't finished the planking, which would have been very difficult with anything else attached, so today I finished the garboard etc, as no suggestions came forward for the chimney I spent an hour with the dental drill and assorted burrs carving out the middle of the lime temporary one I made, looks quite good I think after painting, also added moulding on the larboard side and made both of the booms, tomorrows tasks are hinges for the cockpit door and the moulding for the starboard

Three months of this 6/7 hours a day in the garage could see this finished, the cheerful rigged, Sirius finished and onto the Winchelsea full time20200329_171734.thumb.jpg.c432e2759ef1fffe94b797501a81129c.jpg20200329_171715.thumb.jpg.73e9f2585cfe33c2a33d60c3669a038a.jpg20200329_171659.thumb.jpg.f5b6173a0687e6e045b19948859d07d0.jpg20200329_171643.thumb.jpg.52df2ae987ce1c9a55ca0cf1bef37388.jpg

Paul, she looks sweet with the planking down. I wouldn't be able to get accomplished in three years what you've set out for yourself in the next three months. I'm dead in the water as of right now, of all things I ran out of CA installing the pin rails this morning, bloody hell...........Hey Honey, I've got to go to the store to buy some Super Glue, be right back.
