HMS Beagle by Dean77 - OcCre - 1:60

Recommended Posts

This is my first wooden ship build, as mentioned in my introduction I used to build and fly radio controlled planes, I much preferred building them to flying!

I decided to build HMS Beagle by Occre, the subject ships history is really interesting plus I think it is a beauty!

Occre have step by step YouTube videos of the build which I'm sure will be invaluable.

I have definitely jumped in with both feet but feel I'm up to the challenge!

Instructions appear to be very detailed and walk you through step by step.

I have made a small start on the false keel

I am currently planking the false deck.

Thanks for looking.

I am making some progress with the Beagle, I have made a couple of errors but nothing I wasn't able to correct!20200113_095327.thumb.jpg.be0418433e47373e1bb80bb127828d9f.jpg

Deck planked and fitted.20200113_095335.thumb.jpg.ac06d7e68d980d1cc78ac084cecb60cc.jpg20200113_112206.thumb.jpg.960d016d6e5de2f63384e0655426aef3.jpg20200122_092003.thumb.jpg.9e6aa2fbfd936c0624cc5872cec206a8.jpg

Bulwark fitting, In the process of bending them to shape I snapped one of them! Probably due to being a bit impatient and a bit heavy handed, lesson learned there!! I did manage to repair it and think it is certainly passable now.

The other side I took more care and it bent lovely with out snapping.20200122_092017.thumb.jpg.0f96cef9c9df5f2984cb2db8801b5e03.jpg20200122_093217.thumb.jpg.7123641d0da22544ec685b8704a6d8ab.jpg

Getting closer to planking the hull 🙈

Hi all,

I've been slowly making progress on the Beagle.

Made a few mistakes along the way, I didn't really want to post the pictures up of the 1st layer of planking! Little bit embarrassed to be honest.

2nd plank I didn't quite line up correctly so instead of fitting the 3rd plank in the correct place I lined it up with the 2nd one, so come the 6th plank I had a huge error. I left it overnight to decide what to do. Redo the planks or use filler.

I went for the filler option as I thought I would cause a lot of damage trying to remove them.

2nd layer went well overall I'm pleased with the results, considering my error and it is my first go at planking!

I haven't been great at keeping this build log updated!

I have been plodding along with my build and a very enjoyable build it is! The youtube build guide is a great help.

Ribbons and keel are fitted.

I have painted the hull with black and white stripes.

Transom has been fitted, this was my first attempt at bending wire rod to a pattern, I'm happy with the results so far.

Rudder has been fitted, found this quite fiddly with my trotters for hands!

Gun port doors are fitted in the closed position.

Chain plates made and fitted.

Belaying pins fitted.

Stairs, ships wheel made and fitted.

Next I'm on to making up a capstan and carronade fitted on the bow of the ship.

Looking good . I am following this build during my build of the same ship

Hi Pete, how are you getting on with your build?

This is my first ship I have ever made, I have made a few mistakes along the way, mainly due to not thinking things through properly or not looking ahead at the next steps!

I was drawn to it as I think it is a beauty and the history behind the Beagke is fascinating!

Slowly I've been plodding along with my build, I have been making all the deck furniture again a few mistakes here and there, but overall I am happy and I think it will look good on display!

My first build was HMS Flirt , before I found this blogsite. The instructions were very good form Chris Whatton and methodical. So I could go from one to the other . Turned out fine , only then I found the different builds here , and realised that a few errors and catchups may have been avoided if I had known better . Definitely learned a lot the first time round which is good going into my second build. I chose the Beagle because it not only has the story behind it , but after seeing some of the previous peoples build , and the video it seemed there was a bit more hands on stuff , like making decks , etc , plus its has sails , which Flirt does not have. I am certainly not disappointed in my choice , keeps me interested all the while

Slowly I'm moving on with my build. It's getting a bit more fiddly and delicate now, which is a bit of an issue as I don't have a permanent build area or workshop. So I'm getting it out on my days off and packing it away the night before I'm back in work.

Cannons are fitted in what I assume is a stowed position.

The outriggers on the bow also fitted 20210322_211206.thumb.jpg.70a15c3d12a0608c0ccdccfd8d20c301.jpg

20210322_211158.thumb.jpg.19a553eeb222151c5397d919706a2b85.jpg

Fitted the stern chains, took a couple of goes to try and get them equal lengths.

20210322_211219.thumb.jpg.79bd3f7e18e2ecefb6d751e2f7dd6b71.jpg

Started on the 4 small boats, the largest one sits inside the hull, a small one hanging off the stern and two long boats hanging from the sides.

I did alter the tiller on two of them slightly which I think looks slightly better.

I also painted the hulls white on them all.

had a go at painting the figurehead, I thought the Beagle would look better painted rather than just black as per the instructions. I'm not artistic in any way but I'm fairly happy with how he turned out

All 4 anchors are fitted I found these quite tricky little blighters, just about done the bow sprit which is where I'm at currently!

It's looking great and I am going to have the same issue with the work space. I'm going between two rooms depending on where me and my wife are currently spending time (she is disabled and depending upon her body and how it's going is whether we are in the bedroom or living room). I am trying to make some good progress but the details on my ship are new territory for me so slowing down significantly trying to get it right the first time.

Looking great! I like the way you painted the figurehead.

Looks like you're just a little ahead of me, I'm just about to start on the dinghy and long boats. It's a bit late but I also just started a build log on this kit yesterday if anyone is interested. https://modelshipworld.com/topic/28420-hms-beagle-by-techtonic-occre-160/

Thank you, you are doing a cracking job on your Beagle too!

It's good to take it slowly and to think things through, I've found when I rush ahead and don't look at the next few steps that is  when I make the mistakes.

Bit of a jump from my last post still tocking along with this!

Unfortunately my good lady had an accident and broke both her arms, so I have pretty much become her 24 hour carer!

So I've not been able to do much building.

I haven't taken many pictures, I think I am a touch embarrassed of my work. Especially looking at the high standards of other build threads on here.

I have completed all four masts and made a small start on the shrouds.

This is how she sits at the minute

Hi Dean,

Sorry to hear of your current situation and I hope your good lady makes a full recovery.

Don't feel embarrassed about any aspect of your build, she's looking fine.  I too feel I could do better especially when compared to some of the work we see on the site.  I know I've still a long way to go but we are all learning and gaining experience the more we do.  I'm hoping my skills improve along with my confidence.

I'm also working on the Beagle but some way behind you after also taking some time out.  I'm now back in the game and progressing, albeit at a slow pace.

Hope you get the time to progress your build.

Best wishes

Chimp

Previous Builds: HMS Beagle - OcCre,   HM Schooner Ballahoo - Caldercraft

Dean you are doing a fine job for sure!! It's not about if you do it better than anyone but that you enjoy yourself and learn every step of the way. I only have done 1 build (cept the fact that I have like 6 lines to run of rigging then I'm done but waiting patiently on the rope to be sent out) I made lots of mistakes but always will be striving to do better on each build. Keep up the amazing work!!

Rule of thumb for maintaining sanity: there's always someone better than you at any given task/skill. And if there really isn't at the moment, there will be in a few years. So enjoy what you can do, 'cause there's also plenty of people who haven't gotten as far as you have!

So sorry to hear of the accident, such things really do turn life upside down. Best wishes for getting through that and continuing with your lovely build.
