Providence by RustyNail123 - Artesania Latina - 1:25 Scale - whaleboat - First Wood Ship Model Build

So I started on another kit but it proved to be a bit over my head so I have started with this kit. So far it has been straightforward. There seems to be enough plank work to get me ready for more advanced kits to come. I have NO experience and I’m building the kit On a limb 😬. I know I have plenty of advice and help from this forum and will be using it...a lot. Please lend all the Crits and advice you can give me. It will be a slow process as I’m sure most of these type kits are but so far it’s been very relaxing. Thanks for tuning in!

Yea, Chris is right.  I have that same kit. Will probably start it when I complete the Titantic Lifeboat, also by AL

You take me back.

Just take your time and enjoy the build. I started with the AL Bounty jolly boat when my girlfriend said she wanted, “one of those really nice wooden ships” for the house. I wasn’t happy with what I found online for sale and my searches led me here, where the models looked sooooooo good. So, I told her to let me try building a little one just to see if I could do it, then, if it actually turned out looking like a boat, she could pick out the kit she wanted and I’d build it for her. All went well with the jolly boat because everyone here helped me get along, and I’m still learning from them all today. As for my girlfriend, well, she chose her ship which is now proudly displayed in our office. On my third build now with 4 kits waiting, so I guess I’m enjoying it. You’re going to come out of this a way more knowledgeable builder, trust me.

Et voila, here she is! I look at her all the time to remind myself how far I’ve come along. Sooooo many mistakes, but she was my first build when I knew absolutely nothing. And I’m still proud of her. 😉

I like that story, very inspirational! Thanks ! First obstacle encountered. I was showing my wife and I ummmm...dropped it on the tile floor! Yeeeeaaaaa...not too happy but could have been worse, the dog could have gotten ahold of it. 😆. Any ideas on fixing it. I have a few but shoot them my way!

Good job figuring out a way to fix your broken keel!

I'm fairly new to wooden ship modeling as well and, the more time I spend doing it, I'm finding out that, at least for me, there's a lot of problem solving. I used to feel pretty disappointed when parts didn't fit well, the instructions were confusing and had errors in them, or I simply got too eager and rushed a step resulting in a major goof like gluing the wrong plank in place or over sanding a part and ruining it. I've slowed myself down a lot and take my time to try and think things through more thoroughly. Even then, when errors happen and problems arise , I look at them as just new problems to solve and curiously, rather than feeling terribly frustrated with myself, I'm finding satisfaction at working my way through the problems and fixing the errors as best I can.

Go slow with the instructions. If they are anything like the ones in my Titantic Lifeboat kit, they are less than stellar, and somewhat confusing.  Take your time, you will figure it out, read ahead a couple pages as you go.

Nice recovery on the broken false keel/backbone

The AL Bounty Jolly Boat was my first real model boat.  Those AL small boats are great starter kits.

I went on to a couple Dumas boats and the Model Shipways Sultana (my first real model ship) after that.

Ok so I had a little time this evening and was able to get in a little planking to the inside of the boat. I used very warm water to apply heat and soften the wood and gently bent the planks and then clamped them to the frames so they can dry. The instructions are vague at best...

Ok everyone, so I’ve figured out I’m terrible at keeping logs. I start building and it was full steam ahead. I have finished the boat, aside from the oars. I made the stand out of some scrap wood I had laying around. It’s not perfect and lots of mistakes but it’s done and I enjoyed it! I will include some pics I took along the way.
