Revell B 17 'Memphis Belle' - 1:72 by Popeye the Sailor - finished

Recommended Posts

Popeye,

Looking forward to your build, a restored B-17 that was in a traveling air show recently and recently crashed in Connecticut. In fact it would take the public on rides. No one was injured but the plane was destroyed.

It was recently at Brookley Field in Mobile I was going to take a flight but due to family health problems had to cancel.

Popeye git er dun:cheers:

John are you referring to the 909 crash at Bradley International Airport?  There were casualties.  There were 3 crew and 10  passengers on board. Seven occupants were killed, and the remaining six were injured severely enough to be taken to the hospital, including one who was airlifted. Among the dead were the pilot and co-pilot, aged 75 and 71 respectively. One person on the ground was injured.  The plane belonged to the Collingwood Group.

As for as the accuracy of bombing, it really wasn't until (as Ken point out) that they had to go low.  They found out late in the war that there was "gap" in the German coverage between the flak. I think it was around 6-8000 feet.  The 88's couldn't hit them as too low for the fuses, the other AA's couldn't go higher.

sad about the crash John.......refer to my earlier log for the whole story.   it was the reason why I picked the Nine o Nine for the subject..........

That was not the one, I did say Conn. I am getting old and not replenishing my endorphins. I had picked up a story where a restored bomber had crashed with crew with no injuries prior to a show. I have searched the internet for hours and cannot find what I thought was the story.

I believe the plane had a couple close calls before the Bradley crash.  the original Nine o Nine went to scrap after the war.......the plane that was to be the Nine,  was not as old,  and was a transport plane before the transformation.  chances are,  you read about an earlier crash.......understandable  ;)

I got to watch the movie "Memphis Belle".   it was pretty good........but the air force video included in the DVD debunks the movie.......the waist gunner wasn't injured,  no dead engines,  no landing gear problems.  the plane landed without incident to celebrate their 25th mission.   I did see a few small details that I hope to add.

As I recall, the movie "Memphis Belle" was actually a compilation of it's mission, not just the last.   Something about "dramatic effect" comes to mind.

My mother and I went to that movie at the theaters probably the last one we saw together She remembered alot of the events that occurred in the movie coming from Dad .I think it was a compilation of events that in all the 8th AF to give the viewers an idea of the dangers these guys faced day in and day out they did have the highest mortality rate at one point. ;) Kevin

Yeah, the original was used to sell war bonds, so it was a compilation of 8th AF missions. "12 O'clock High" was similar. AF Command and Staff school used it as a command study. A lot of the aerial shots were real gun camera shots.

And yes those bomber crews had a high mortality rate until 1944, when we could send Mustangs up as long range escorts for them. Lose one plane and 10 guys didn't come home.

They just finished refurbishing the real Memphis Bell and putting her up on static display. The pictures of the rebuild were amazing and it looks like she could fly. Too bad they didn't take her all the way.

As far as I know, we have the only flyable B-17F left in the world. It was one of the planes used in making the Memphis Bell movie. It was painted as different planes on each side! I got to go on board her back in the mid 90s when my father-in-law came to visit and I took him to visit the restoration facility here in Everett. Back then they would do personal tours, escorting you through the planes being restored on  a one-to-one basis. We were able to see all kinds of aircraft that they were working on and like the B-17 were able to go on board some of them. I don't think they do that kind of tour anymore, but they do offer a tour of the restoration hanger here in Everett WA. for about $5 per person. I suppose if you go in the winter on a weekday like we did it could still end up being a personal tour.

there is the confusion between the movie and the army versions.........the movie was about the 25th mission.   John Lithgow is the PR guy in the movie.  the army version,  which was released during the war,  was about the every day life of the B 17 and her crew.   that was a compilation of missions and places.  the Memphis Belle was front and center in that piece as well.  there were a couple of other B 17's that were flown in and altered to look like F's to Co star in the movie version........the Swoose was one of them........the Sally B was another.  we had more than one flyable B 17...........sadly we lost one of them :(

the movie did point out one thing......that the fighters weren't carrying a belly tank during this period.

There was a contractor superintendent I worked with in the 70's who was a WW2 B-17 tail gunner. Amazingly, the old gentleman survived two missions where his B-17 was shot down and he managed to bail out. As you may know, this was no small feat for a tail gunner as he had to crawl through a very small space to enter or exit his gunner's position. Many tail gunners were lost who were never able to escape that position once an airplane began going down. His first time, he parachuted over France where he was rescued by French resistance. The second time, he was captured by the Germans and spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp.

I've seen so many pictures of B 17 damage....the movie was no exception.   Imagining being in the three most vulnerable { I changed the two to a three due to the belly turret....wouldn't want to be in that position either} areas of the plane...............I'm sure it was a sick feeling.  the ability of these planes to stay in the air,  in spite of heavy damage was astounding.  when I built the Nine o Nine,  I watched a documentary on the 452nd Bomber Group.......even though the Nine was with the 303rd,  I watched anyway.........horrific footage in that one too.

the things a modeler has to go through..........   I ordered the mask set for this model around the beginning of the month........then I find out that I ordered it from a place in the Ukraine.   had a tag on the mailbox this morning by the post office.....they needed a signature for a package.  the admiral noticed that the mail man was just up the street,  so I walked up there to see him.   it had snowed this morning.......cold and raw now,  misting rain,  and I waited till he got back to his truck.  chilled to the bone,  but I got my package :)   this will do the B 17F and G 1:72 by Revell.   this isn't the reason why I haven't been working on her.......  but I will be....hopefully I will have something for you  all soon :)

ok.....let's get to it :)   at the moment I'm cleaning up sprue marks....there is some minor flash.  I can't believe how thin the plastic is!  I'm not a huge fan of movable flaps and ailerons.........I think it depends on the subject application.......you know,  what your going to do with it.  the stabilizer ailerons have no hinges,  so they will be very hard to give them that property.  looking at the paint chart,  this is going to be a complex model to paint.

some can be done with airbrush,  but I think a lot of it will be done with a brush.  should have an update for you all soon ;)

Revell Germany has a 1/48th scale B-17 , too....   just in case.

btw.: The forms are developed in Germany (Bünde), the kits are produced in Poland.

It took quite a while to get this kind of quality, but I am a great fan of Revell Kits: Great quality at an affordable price. Used to visit the factory once and posting a story about them in our magazine „Das Logbuch“.

You should see the recent 1/350 scale ship models of the „Platinum“ series: I do have the NEW JERSEY and the TIRPITZ with thousands of parts each, in plastic, metal and wood. Impressive.
Currently soaking up pictures an books of both ships...

Popeye - You're right on how nice this kit is by Revell-Germany. The one negative remark that I've read is about the instructions being a little vague. Not sure if that's true. I definitely will be following your progress on this kit.

I just watched on youtube the NTSB's preliminary report on the Nine-O-Nine crash. It looks like high humidity and earlier rain affected the #4 engine's magneto's and caused misfiring in engine. They banked to the right (the side of the engine problem) to return to runway 6. Altitude was about 200-300' and they clipped the landing lights before the runway, thus causing them to loose control and slide right across grass area and into a de-icing structure.

You probably have already looked at this site, but I have been doing some research on the 532BS/381BG 8th AF stationed at Ridgewell, England. A lot of photos in their archives. Here's the link:

I'm still trying to get caught up with everyone's projects......trouble is that I watch too many.  I probably could if I just sat my butt down,  but the table call gets really strong.........I must submit :stunned:

good to see you here Egilman........not too sure,  but I think I started a B 17 movement :D   my luck seems to have kept me building F models........perhaps the future might allow me to build one of the other models.

the Lindberg 1:64 was a real whistle wetter for me.........I would love to do one that large.  I do have a B 25 in the stash........can't wait to get started on it.   I've only done a couple plastic ships.......I do have an already started Tamiya kit of the New Jersey...waiting to get into that one as well.

hey there Robert......I've always love the Revell kits....their 1:96 series was {is} the finest models,  in their day.   I have two of them in the stash {one already started}.........and I enjoy building in that particular scale.  I have to say that I was moved hearing about the crash.  I've never been motivated like that before.  when I was young......what did I know........I just put 'em together.   but as I said before,  the internet opened a lot of new doors,  and the medium was moved.  thanks for the link........perhaps the G variant might be here...one that will catch my eye :)
