But then again an airbrush is pretty handy and doesn't cost much - other than buying the aerosol cans. It took me a a few coats to get the supports painted reasonably well and then cutting out the rail and fitting it around the cap rail. I decided not to cut away the cap rail and instead sanded away a corner of the support. I thought that this would be a more safe approach and reduce the likelihood of me damaging the model or getting frustrated. Currently, I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that there is enough space for the PE decorations between the gun ports. Darn, my fears were realized. Since I cut the gun ports too wide the PE decorations are now too long. I believe the only solution is to trim some of the decorations off as best as I can to fit them and make certain to do it in pairs to keep the symmetry on each side. No will know aside from me in the end and I really would like to have the ornate fittings on. I’ll sleep on this before I start trimming but I don’t really see an alternative path, nor any real downside to this approach. They come in a nice selection of colors They seem to have a good consistency & are all rather thick; haven't yet tried their yellow, but have used their titanium white, red oxide and ivory black. I'm just starting out and have essentially zero experience in painting. Humbrol I can get in France, Admiralty paints I'd have to order from the UK. Unfortunately the cannonballs are steel so I tried to spray paint them instead of chemically blackening them. The spray seemed to work well but now that I'm gluing the shot into the holders I'm having a fit of a time. Glue is everywhere, mainly in places that I didn't intend and I'm scrapping off some of the paint; thankfully I'm doing this off model and I'll try to touch them up and we'll see what happens. This step is certainly full of frustration at the moment (and I'm pretty certain that I've lost at least a few cannonballs so most likely I'll have to find some replacements 🙁). I'll definitely be glad to be through with it). VTHokiEE Posted June 11, 2020 Author Share #141 Posted June 11, 2020 I finished up with cannonballs (and ended up with a large assortment of steel ball bearings in the process to replace the one I lost, unfortunately there were not any spares). I cut a piece off of the 3mm pear sheet to attach the shot holders. I touched up the cannonballs after I had glued them to the holders and of course I couldn't do this without a slight incident (slightly painting the holder). Due to this I have some "nice" brushes on order, with cleaner, etc to hopefully keep a nice tip. After these were attached I moved onto the ring bolts on the deck. I decided to follow in BE's footsteps on his Alert and used aftermarket eye pins and rings instead of the included PE parts. I bought some from Amati and had some on hand from hismodel, which were already blackened (I ordered some hooks for rigging the cannons and grabbed some eye pins as well. Side note - everyday my young son asks when I am going to do a cannon, so I may need to start on one soon :-). These pictures show off all my flaws, the blackening looks quite rough, but it isn't really noticeable from normal viewing distances. I do think that I need to improve in this area though. I placed the channels and then noticed that I had them too far astern, I very carefully removed them and them replaced them as you see below (which closely mirrors the location in the manual, again my gun ports are wider than than the opening on the channels, but looking forward in the manual it seems to look quite similar to when the deadeyes line up). Next I added the steps and draught markings. The instructions say to paint the markings copper; I liked the way they stood out in the pictures so away I went. Finally I added the ring bolts for the side tackle (I should have done this before gluing the shot holders on, but I managed). Now I'm currently adding the holes ring bolts for the breeching line. I only glued the set up in the bow since there will not be any cannons there. I still have to drill out the remaining hold, but I needed a break. Thank you for following! VTHokiEE Posted June 27, 2020 Author Share #149 Posted June 27, 2020 I have this problem where I get super focused on trying to do “A” and then accidentally make a mess of “B.” It’s definitely something I need to be careful of in the future. My current issue (and pardon the poor quality photo) is that I put the winch on backwards ☹️. I know I have to rip apart the winch and redo it but I used epoxy to glue the winch in and CA on the photo etch. Is there anyway to take this apart without destroying all the parts? Boy am I frustrated with myself at the moment. I wanted to make certain the side which had to have some resin cleaned up was pointed inward where I thought it would be least visible... How do I undo epoxy and CA? VTHokiEE Posted June 28, 2020 Author Share #150 Posted June 28, 2020 Slight update, I was able to use a knife to slice off the PE and then a little bit of acetone to soften the epoxy and get all the parts separated.
