the metal block look like brackets rather than blocks......jut not the envisionment of blocks with no real 'hole' to speak of.  if you want to use them,  it's up to you......my offer still stands :)

I looked in Peterssons book to refresh MY memory........as I thought....no tops.   I was always under the impression that both masts are only two sectioned,  but I see that there is a short third section on the fore mast with it's own cross tree......   note the horse for the main mast boom.  doesn't appear that the cross trees act as a spreader either.........may be due to the rake of the masts.   your going to have a majestic looking lady there ;)

I yam wot I yam!

Thanks much, I’m gonna give em a try, I want to see if I can make um work, a challenge, if you would.  I do greatly appreciate your offer though.

Im only planning on two step masts, main and fore.   Are you going to take the fore up to three?

After my conversation with Popeye this morning I decided to scrap the tops and go with the cross/trestle trees as he suggested...

so I made some cheeks

IMG_0422.JPG.14544e9ccb2f40d0a6a5f38df67574d8.JPG

and trestle and cross trees

IMG_0423.JPG.c828fadb349652f3a497d5584a6dbd18.JPG

and inset them both

IMG_0424.JPG.05f2c92a2492e3662bc0ae31f59d66af.JPG

and glued um up

IMG_0425.JPG.50fc62f887d3b716760d22c8130cee15.JPGIMG_0426.JPG.48e822d372bdd1388d10c93e9788dfa0.JPG

then made some bolsters, just quartered dowels

IMG_0427.JPG.871a4932ab3323d66e98340279cf67f7.JPG

and glued them up

IMG_0428.JPG.6d5e27e16d0828107fbd651e68e031c5.JPG

and that was it...so both masts now have the appropriate trees, thanks for the likes and comments...and thanks Denis for the solid advice, much appreciated

as long as you left enough room up front for the second section to fit into,  your right in the ball park! :)   looks super.   as mentioned.....I was always under the impression that the fore and main masts were both two sectioned.   after looking in Petersson's book,  I see that the fore mast has a short top gallant section.   so yes.......I'll go three sections for the fore mast,  and two sections for the main mast.  I learned something too this morning.......thanks for making me take that second look ;)

This kit comes with a lot of hardware the problem is most of it is oversize (thus Jumbo the Clipper) the supplied screweyes are no exception....so I decided to see what I could do to make use of them. I straightened them out and recurved them with a pair of small round nose.  I think they will be usable

Well that's it for now, thanks again for looking in

Decided to break out the rope walk and spin up some shroud lines and anchor rope

IMG_0440.JPG.092ad5f6666ed8afa3f9072fa629e833.JPGIMG_0441.JPG.9fa738e2d04faa2bb17d8a19408f637f.JPGthese will be the upper shroud lines

IMG_0444.JPG.0638e6df9bdc4aefe22224740e7df64e.JPG

the upper copper lines will serve as chain plates to attach the lower deadeyes to the channels, once they're blackened that is, they are copper wire spun up on the walk

IMG_0446.JPG.c8635de40a18e80040ff920c27a66052.JPGfinished out the anchors

the start of the rigging........looks good :)   I'll have to fix the anchors in my kit.........they are loose and the banding is beginning to peel.  I don't have a rope walk.........I usually rely on different  size thread

You put a dab of ca on the very ends to prevent it from starting to unravel, but the twists in the line hold it together for the most part.  Mine is just a cheap one from Model Expo, there are some pretty elaborate ones I've seen folks make though

Hey all thx for the likes and comments...the channels and chainplates are done, my original plan to use the spun copper was a complete FAIL, the stuff would not keep a bend for nothing so I reverted to solid copper

IMG_0451.JPG.74b9969a2b3e073255b665c465c27fa3.JPG

wrapped the deadeyes

formed the lower sections

and blackened everything, used Jax for this

IMG_0456.JPG.255e802c5fa25de493408c730e6927f6.JPG

and finally mounted

also got the masts, yards and booms prepped and ready, no pics yet maybe later today of not tomorrow for sure

I found the same thing, I ended up stripping some heavy duty earth cable for the .5mm copper.

She's gonna look good considering the problems you had at the start with the de-lamination. Great job😁👍

added mast rings and boom rests, these are just strips of card stock glued up and dyed and painted.

and added some bolts and rings for the fore stays. and that's it for now.   just trying to get as much done as I can before I step the masts as it's easier then working in the air, so to speak

Wow! Sorry to barge into your build log, but this is kind of funny. One of my friends has had a model ship in his house for as long as I've known him. Over the years it's become a bit knocked-about, having its bowsprit broken and items of its rigging snapped and ripped off, as well as a coating of dust that made it look like a dandelion seed. I never paid much attention to it if I'm honest.

Anyway a couple of weeks ago he showed up at my doorstep with it (left it on the front step because we're in quarantine of course) and explained on the phone that his father had been given the ship years ago, and had in turn given it to him. When his father saw how poorly he had looked after it, he was very disappointed. So my friend was hoping I could clean and repair it.

Well of course I said yes, and it actually wasn't in such bad shape under all the dust. I fished the bowsprit and fixed the rigging. Anyway the reason I'm telling this story is that I had assumed it was a scratch-build or something. Now I see, it's the same ship you're building!

No it's scratched...used the kit boat as a buck to make a new one from paper...thx, trying to finish before the end of the month, not sure if I'm gonna make it or not, cap rails weren't to bad.  The rudder was a pain to align with the hole in the deck...I ended up drillin' a bunch and making a cover plate

Thanks to all for the likes and comments...mast are stepped and rigging has commenced but first the ships boat was hung from the davits, I just made some simple hooks from wire and blacken it...

I spun up the main shroud lines on the rope walk, no pics here, same story just different threads, and they were mounted to both masts, I made up a deadeye jig to size the shroud lines
