They were cable operated with a spring on the control stick to keep the stick basically centered, with serious usage the spring would relax a bit and allow the elevator, (horizontal stabilizer control surfaces) to droop a bit... The rudder would lie whichever way the rudder pedals were last touched as they were a push pull configuration and the ailerons on the wings would twist on the same basis depending on the side the stick leaned towards.... I'm not remembering exactly when they went to hydraulics on the Spit, but that was the case with the early built birds. But when they did go to hydraulics, the elevator droop would become much more pronounced as the hydraulic pressure bled off.....

Separate control surfaces in the kit allows this mechanical habit to be modeled accurately

I am doing mine drooped stabs  slight rudder turn  and  level ailerons   with the  flaps in there locked up position (these are molded in with the lower wings)

You're building a late Mk IX, chances are it has hydrolics for those functions

I  thought about  building it with everything flush  but thought it would be more interesting with  things drooped.

This pic off the net shows a powerd down spit with stabs drooped and some movement of the rudder.

If they were tied down at night or for any period time, the ailerons, rudder and elevator would also be tied down.  If not, they'd flop about when the wind blew.

Yep  I  relate to that mark, I have even seen then use  small wooded chock blocks  on aircraft moving surfaces in museums  for the same reason I guess.

Sometimes they'd put control locks in the cockpit to prevent the surfaces from flopping around. Big old red painted locks, so the tyro pilot couldn't miss that part. ;)

Good evening all   hope your all in good health,      right then  I did  another hour on the spit,  firstly  I fitted the two ailerons  straight forward  procedure, then I fitted the wing tips  - again glued straight on with no fuss,  what amazes me is the scale cord  thiness  of the wings  just like the real thing.

I must do a bit more later today,  I decided to have a lazy day infront of the box  watching some chill out tv shows last night,    I will have a general check  over the bits I last fitted  than will probably work on the exhaust systems, these even have hollowed out pipes  so they will be blacked inside then after fitting I will paint the outsides in a rusty bronze colour I will make up from mixing flat alum  and some red ocre  (same as I did on the Mossie  exhausts)   then I will be able to glue down the engine cover I made up the other day.

Good day everyone  hope all are well,     I decided to do a bit more this afternoon  as the weather was pants  with light rain  so no sitting in the back patio,  so  I decided to work on one of the exhaust manifolds  - this is built up using four sections,   after assembly  I painted the insides of the exhausts flat black  then I made up a bronzy type colour by mixing flat black/flat alum  and red ocre,   then after drying  with my friend  "Harold hairdryer"  I glued it in place iniside the forward bulkhead, then I dry fitted the engine comp cover.

Those are nicer than the ones in the Hasegawa kit, which are solid, and they'd be a real pain to hollow out evenly. I'd have to go resin to get that look.

Coming along beautifully OC. I just found your build thread, by the way.

I wonder if the exhausts are from Moskit. The company used to make hollowed metal exhausts just like those, for a number of different aircraft.

Hiya mate,   thank you for the compliment,   I'm not sure about the exhausts  - guess  it is quite unusaul for them to be this detailed with in a kit, in the box there is a choice of two different sets of exhausts I guess for early or late - if not a different  model of Spit.

Evening all  home inmates,    I did  a bit more on the spit this eve  as I was in the back yard enjoying some nice but cold sunshine  from that strange thing in the sky,    so first thing  I ran some putty into that gap where the top engine cowl meets the forward fuselage,  then it was time to construct the bottom cowl at the front, this also has a pe vent filter  fitted inside  (fiddly with limited acsess)  after cleaning the join seams (slightly)  I then glued it in place.

No pics as I will wait till I have cleaned up the join seams where it meets the fuselage.
