USS Gearing 1/350 Tips and Getting Started?

Hey guys, so I'm brand new this is going to be my first model.

I just was wondering some tips and tricks and even had some questions.

So do you typically paint the pieces first? Or do you paint some of the pieces first and the big stuff later? The directions don't really clarify much for painting other than the colors.

Go look at some of the builds by RGL in the kit area.  He is a master at plastic warships.
