Viking Ship by John Ruy - FINISHED - Marine Model Company - 3/16” = 1’ (1/64 scale) - Vintage Solid Hull Kit (Gokstad)

Recommended Posts

Another Marine Model Company Kit. I just can’t resist rescuing unfinished kits I find on eBay. I intend to enhance this kit with planking and Viking Oarsmen. I am researching the Gokstad ship as a guide for my enhancement. Should be fun.

Looks like a fun project, keep us updated.

Thanks Cathead... Got lumber in today and built a home grown steam box. This ones going to be a lot of fun, particularly with the curved planking. Should be an experience.

Still working on my Charles W Morgan right now, but will probably multitask construction of both.

Wish me luck...

Started planking the Viking today. Soaked the cut pieces in Ammonia Water over night.

Started planking at the keel with over lapping planks. I first extended the keel at both the bow and stern.  Here is a photo of the type Viking ship I’m going for...

Finished the half hull today. Truly a new experience for me. Not without its challenges...

So... the planking didn’t go as I thought. The problem was the inside of the hull didn’t look right with the solid hull. So I had to blow it out.

The hull now needs some extensive repair but I think it is worth saving. My kit just became a scratch build.

Wow! This scratch building is not easy. I got to say this ship is looking hand hewn. You would think I hacked at this with an ax. LOL 😆 NEED to find examples of interior framing. I am open to any suggestions.

Progress... I have cut down the sides of the hull and placed the beams. I carved the mast-fish today and developed a process to build the top-ribs and knees that support the upper stakes.

I have been working from the book Viking Longship by Keith Durham.

The book is full of wonderful photos from the University Museum of Cultural Heritage, University of Oslo, Norway 🇳🇴 The research on these ships is half the fun. 👍

Two steps backwards three steps forward, progress. Reworked the hull, again. Installed top ribs and re- planked the sides of the hull. Starting to accumulate a lot of wood scraps as I wing this kit/Scratch build.

John,

Nice work - you sure are working quickly

A Viking longboat is my next project. After binging on "Vikings" TV series - along with how they thoroughly researched as much as possible when making the sets, costumes, shields, and the ships - got real interested. Michael Hirst, the producer/writer, has also written a very enjoyable book about the research for the series.

RE: the the Shaw article - be sure to use a boulder for an anchor attached to a "Y" piece of tree 😊. Kits always seem to add a metal traditional looking anchor.

Thanks for the tip, I am trying to make this circa 800. The kit was not accurate and did not include any anchor. I have seen the anchor you are talking about in my research, I’ll have to include it on the deck. Thanks.
