Cutty Sark by Vladimir_Wairoa - 1:24- English Clipper - FINISHED

Good evening  all,

not working today. I made 1 anchor out of 2, as couldnt find big anchor,,,i opted for one with wooden part....atached admiral stick from much smaller anchor, and installed nameplate. it was quite difficult and time cnsuming, its made of square  brass profile to step out of flat surface. that is from 1.5 mm plywood, not steel.  Lady on the nose is not yet born. :) and wont be so soon I guess.

meanwhile I was studying rigging by a lot. about that >

I am at the point of thinking how to mast / rig her.  But we at home decided that when Hull is ready, its alwazs I love rigging part fart more that woodwork, as played with ropes since being kid. looking forward to.

it would give her a credit to get  standing rigging up to the topmast at this point. ....and i will see from there......but definitely will do standing rigging, and would like to go only jigs for running rigging.......surely not other  sails ....but to the point it is not cumbersome to move comfortably. Despite its longitude, she is surprisingly light / apart of stern. Im thinking of mast her up to topmast. most likely not topgallant. I would like to install jigs...but that is concerning me with forepart of ship. definitely much longer. I could be able to install 1 and that would be pointless. :) so still thinking. what do you think would be most siutable?

she is half deck anyway ! can be 3 quarters masts as well....BUt i want to cripple her to the beauty. well i have to slow down.,

many parts left so im preparing standing rigging, want to go as close to original design, making deadeyes block stanchions , than I want to solder small plate to the bulwark to attach it and relieve rail completely from the strain transferring it to the bulwarks.

I made all stanchions yesterday , drilled hole, .. turned out fun { probably 30 minutes. )

oh by the way, muntz sheathing is started but im not to continue at this point as that can be done anytime when rains outside. turned out pretty easy at this scale, only time consuming. opted for brass , i made sure20200229_114908.thumb.jpg.8a57a5aa7534001639b1d20147486cb0.jpg20200229_114908.thumb.jpg.8a57a5aa7534001639b1d20147486cb0.jpg to buy not too thick to cut with scissors but ot too thin like tape.. it was cheap on amazon from china, perfect to work with...to show yellow gloss...

As far as rigging her, can you get her out of the workshop if there's masts in place?  Beautiful work.

Congratulations Vladimir on all your work. She looks impressive. Are you going to fit masts and rigging?

Keep up the good work. I shall follow this with interest. I visit the Maritime Museum at Greenwich as often as I can (I use the archive there) and when I get off the Underground I walk past the Cutty Sark. If you would like some pictures let me know. Not sure when I will be going again though, with all this virus trouble at the moment.

All the best,

Hello Mark,

would you mind sending me some pics around masting please if you have some of those? i did start on that route up to topmast, specially around bands...so anything with detail would be fantastic. thank you. you can email me lehato11@yahoo.com... or whatever... :) have a good day , Vlad

Good Evening Vladimir;

I will certainly take some for you next time I am at Greenwich. Unfortunately I am not sure when this might be. At the moment the Maritime Museum is shut, which is my reason for going to Greenwich. Until the government here relax the travel restrictions and things are more normal, I shall not be going past the ship.

Very nice work on the bulwark stanchions. Keep it up!

All the best,

Mark P

Good evening fellow builders.

I took a few days off yard, having other things to work on and to take breqk to think where to go from hull completed. I spent quite a time measuring and discovered interesting website about cutty rebuilt in her australia wook era, having lowered lower nasts by 3 feet and yards consequently. Due to many practical obstacles  Im leaning day by day to leave idea of seeing her with sails and I think of masting her with low masts up to tops. I intend to fill her with shrouds uo to tops, thinking thst would fill her plenty and provide idea of rigging up higher...prbably installing spanker gaff yard. I intend to  make her wire shrouds rounded with tiny ropes as original...you can see on pics how tall it is up to top of topmasts, but i wilp not go that high. Definitely. I was playijg with idea of installing empty lower masts up to top but standing rigging and few blocks will be more colorful I  guess. I started again yesterday  at full speed and  was working past two days on masting. Iron work on braces in full progress, not yet blackened.. l look forward to continue up higher the masts with caps  etc.  You can see difference measures in same scale for revell and campbell tops - larger is revell , clearly difference from campbell. :) masts are not yet secured in angles just stuck in hokes :) but measured as I had to align cheeks top angle :)) Here is the progress. Thank you interest and for any comment, etc. Everyone try to keep yourself safe in these covid times.

Good Afternoon Vladimir;

She is coming along rapidly. You are a fast worker. Well done on deciding to rebuild the stern rail. If it does not look right, change it while you can, or regret ever afterwards that you did not.

Keep up the good work!

Hello folks,

been working here and there, though slowed down considerably. Tried to save stern curvature after horrible mistake at the beginning by reading wrongly Campbel plan, / i dont want even speak about it, taking cabin curvature and applied it to be deck one (jaysus mary oh my hastiness ) to save it. Thus i had to open rail, and widen it to get more agressive curvature... thankfully not all **** of ship where is ornamentation. it was really worisome, but seems all sturdy as rail got taken off at one piece thankfully. I did manage to make some things even bettter, following closely clampbell drawing for curvature by making molded board....i made  margin plank narrower - as should be. at least me satisfaction.  finally some movement. Having shrouds hanged gives me smile that i can smell finish being close after such time. hoorah...Still plenty of work to be done. I made rotary tool out of drill to thread up black waxy trhead upon wire. that one is polyester one from amazon but seem to be better than amati rope I compared with. waxy polyester stays on wire and comfortably around dead eye. Instead of uncountable hours and days and few test pieces  gave me smile with 3 minutes per 1 shroud. worked like a charm. Working on many thinks at same time, some photos to look at. She will be lower masted without yards except of spanker...I think I will finish her with with sun shade thru spanker yard as famous photo showing her moored in australia,..... I painted topmasts silhouettes black ...:) not transparent ! as should be. I  am leaving  her with all posibilty ( eyes and so on cleats. already in place ) to get masted higer up and rigged to desire at any time in fufure if there will be mood..huge place ...etc....that will be work for some continuing years.......some pics as works contiues...comments welcomed and awaited. thank you folks. I reconsidered and already making davits,. and..meanwhile working on liverpool deck top windows, deadeyes straps  and awaiting some fine lanyards get delivered from GB.1147664415_20200418_132906-Copy.jpg.730bcefb477ea5c2165b77800d6dbbca.jpg

by the way, Rigging compromising. As I knew i am not going to make my own deadeyes, I had to downscale sizing of ropesby very slight margin, to fit deadeyes - but not willing to spoil the accuracy. in my scale 1:24 5" wire means 5 mm !!! thinkness of rope_ or wire.  So it will be approx 1 mm down and consequently for all others. Anyway, from the old photos is evident that current rigs are most likely downscaled as well comparing to what Campbel suggests  back in time  - wire was not turned around upper deadeye - but was fit via shroud eye and another small eye to the deadeye- it was too thick to fit deadeye from black white pic I saw...anyway , keep safe and good luck with modeling.,

have a good week.

A curious thought. The deck rails on the ship; are they what were fitted when she was built? The original owner was very proud of this new flagship, which he insisted included nothing but the best available materials and finishes. My question:- were these rails polished brass? I understand the original bow and stern decorations were lost; indeed the stern had a rather saucy tableau which society at that time regarded as a bit beyond the pale. Any comments, please.

I'd suggest asking this in the research area, Shipman.

This scale certainly allows some great work on attaching the deadeyes. Very nice. You have got me thinking Vladimir, maybe its time for me to move up to the larger scales.

The deadeyes in the first photo remind me of the painting "Scream", by Munch. Weird, I know.

This scale certainly allows some great work on attaching the deadeyes. Very nice. You have got me thinking Vladimir, maybe its time for me to move up to the larger scales.

The deadeyes in the first photo remind me of the painting "Scream", by Munch. Weird, I know.

Fair winds,

Hello Martin, yeah, this kind of scale allows deadeyes diameter 10 -12 mm by scale. I used dioptrical screws 1,4 mm thick quite comfortably - when i figured out how to  - however, every scale come at a price - small with difficulty/ not possibility go detailed, big place and rigging compromisses obstacles as you well know. Before you move on to this scale with cutty please calculate the place and final look of ship before you start. as you may end up longing for having it under sails - and problem starts. its ok for jigs - not square rigs. the huge body of ship alone as now becomes very tiny under sail - imposantly enough.... but if you are ok with compromises or probably only masting her -and want to concentrate on details or build only body of ship  - scale like this one really allows for artistic paradise to happen. there is massive amount of details plenty of them etc...speaking of cutty sark though. I know I wil  go tad smaller next time - 1:68 or 1:48 ? just for reason I will put sail on. not that i regret this one contrary, I cant imagine myself to work with those surgical instruments so :)) i will build probably steamer next time - or pilot cutter :)) im definitely intersted only in end of 19 century / beginning of 20.
