  • 2 weeks later...

Evening all,   while waiting for the Mossie to have her touch up, and the spit  to de-gas,  I decided to continue with my seafire  -  next  to work on was to paint the cockpit/seat section  - this had the normal colours applied, then a bit of shading/highlighting,  then I fitted the seat belts that was in the form of decals, after I gave the whole thing a few coats of flat top coat.

Evening all,    more progress  on the cockpit  I started by painting the instrument panel  this  had the sight added  then  shaded/highlighted, after it was glued to the main assembly  the whole thing was pushed in place in the fuselage.

This is the scheme I am going for  - its an all over the top and sides  EDSG   with lower Sky, a Single Roundel  on the fuselage  with a Red letter 0, on the tail will be the normal flash   and with roundels  ontop and underneath the wings,   this was a  test scheme  the Navy brought in  before it was applied to the newer Seafires in 1945.

Its the lower one out of the Three, also  thease are the latter model of Seafire with the Griffin engine  mine has the earlier Merlin.

Evening all.   some good progress today  -  first  I  worked on the stabs,  they needed a bit of scribing   then they were glued in place, next was the rudder  - not much fuss  just glued straight on,   next  I worked on the cockpit glazing  this was masked using tamiya tape, I placed a larger than needed piece onto glazing then cut away the excess, after completing the nose glazing and rear section  they were then glued down.

Here are a few pics also showing my other spit  (that wanted to get in on the photo shoot).

Does anyone know how long you need to wait between spraying a Tamiya Laquer paint  rattle can, and being able to hand paint a layer of Acrylic paint ontop, I know its safe this way round  but dont know If I need to wait for the Laquer to Fully de gas first (no worries if I have to wait as I have other jobs on hand)

With the quality of what is being built here, the modeling experience and talents being shown, you may very well have to... {chuckle}

I've always said that applying the techniques of building wooden and multimedia ships are exactly applicable to the plastic modeling world, and I am not afraid to state the fact that many, (if not most) of the ship models in the US Navy museum are at least multi-media and a good portion of those have some form of plastic on them....

Plastic is nothing but a medium with it's advantages and disadvantages.....

This is a good place to show off skills/techniques that don't often get shown...

There are plenty of differences between plastic and wood, card, metal etc building. I'm talking Kit building here - Scratchbuilding does indeed share a lot of similarities.

For instance there is a lot more painting involved in plastic compared to the others. Also different prep work (cutting, filling, cleaning for paint, gluing, etc). Plastic modelling usually doesn't involve a lot of modification to parts unless you are modifying an existing Kit (I suppose the same could be said of the others).

There are also differences in the type of tools required for the different media. For instance a lathe or milling machine wouldn't get much use if you work strictly in card or plastic, but would be essential for metal and (to a lesser extent) wood building. Of course there are also plenty of cross-overs between those required for the various media (scalpels, measuring equipment, tweezers, etc).

Cheers, Danny

Well then we agree Dan, most of us start out as kit builders, and grow into model makers.... The basic skills and tools are the the same, model building is where you decide to do it your own way instead of the way the kit manufacturer says it should be.....

That is when the artistry comes out...... (and you realize you can model anything)

that's where scratch building comes in.........lots of time,  the supplied parts aren't quite up to snuff,  especially ship fittings.   the use of paint is more of a requirement with plastic than wood.........with wood you see more lacquers and stains.

Hi all,   so today I was "multi tasking - shhhh  cant let the admiral hear I struggle looking at the hoover as it is"    I first  put the first  grey coat  down on the Spit, then put it away in my box to dry, then the  second bit  - I decided to work on the Seafire,   in the kit  you have the choice to display the wing guns  open through an open panel,  I decided this would be good on the one wing,   first  I  struggled to understand the  instructions as it wasn't clear how the machine guns and feed units go,   they come into two different types of assemblies, after going to Mr Google  to check out some pics  - I found out how they fit together.

I first put a few coats of cockpit green down, and while at it did the same to the wheel wall  and well  bottoms,  next job was to put some  nato black  on the machine guns, then when dry  (with hairdryer again)  I dry brushed some white over them.

I finished off by gluing the wings together.

What did they have, OC?  A long barrel one and short barrel one?  Nice work on them.  I would have thought the ammo box would have been bigger...

Hello again,    A bit more progress  on this  - this evening  I dry fitted the wings to fuselag, and after doing a bit of filing/sanding  - I glued them into place,  not quite as good a fit as the Eduard kit  - so it will need a bit of filling with putty here and there.

No pics as the phone was charging.
