HM Cutter by Edwardkenway - 1:48 scale from Caldercraft plans

Recommended Posts

I scratch built the bowsprit bits for Lady Nelson because the kit pieces were so out of scale. Take a look from the link below if your interested..

Very nice work on main bits, excellent craftsmanship.

Thank you Glenn, you did a beautiful job of Lady Nelson, I've been having a read through, I will borrow your design for the bowsprit bits as it looks very good and much better than I had in mind, which would have been the same as the main bits but smaller.

Cheers 😉

We're not allowed to lay bricks 3°c and under.

Makes for workshop time😁

My son-in-law is a painter and decorator and tries to keep inside work for poor weather.

Small update, many thanks to Glenn, for allowing me to shamelessly borrow his remodeled bowsprit bits on his amazing Lady Nelson:ph34r:.

Well since I've been back at the bench I've been dividing my time between this, Winnie and my non ship models.

Mainly been painting the deck fittings and making ladder mk3, this is because I saw Chuck's ladders for Winchelsea and thought they looked better  than my chunky creations,  so a leaner version is being made.

Thanks for all your comments, likes and looking your head round the door😉

Cheers

So, spent a few hours this week wrestling with the leaner ladder, after three failed versions finally made one of sufficient quality to use.20210115_154610.thumb.jpg.52e09a1196349a77e6a33b1d6a5e1c36.jpg

Instead of two pieces of 1mm wood glued together the stringers are 1 piece. I think it is more to scale than my other ladder. 20201121_213850.thumb.jpg.38b6b2721fd25ba554805f5e48c62eae.jpg20210115_154815.thumb.jpg.487bb6dd2e3702e34665c8b4a52f8ee9.jpg

the photos above show the difference, granted it's not a lot, but I am happier with the slimmer version, also it's wider. As can be seen deck fittings are in the process of being painted, and the glazing in the skylight windows is done, just waiting for the glue to dry (photo next time.

I'm waiting on an order from CMB of brass rod and wire, then I will be doing more to the top rail.

Thanks for looking in and hitting the button.

Cheers 😉

That slimmer ladder was well worth the effort Edward. The difference may not be that great in terms of objective measurements, but to my eye it looks much more in scale.

Thank you Derek, if you have seen the laser cut ladders Chuck has done for Winchelsea and also Chris Wattons pear ladders, they totally made me want to try and recreate a slimmer one. The filing of the stringers tested me though, too deep and they just fold up when fitting the treads🤨😬

You are welcome to them, and a very nice job at that😁

I envy some of those lasered fittings on Winnie, like the ladders. Some things are fun to make, some are just a chore...like ladders. I agree the new ladder was worth the re-work, a nicer look.

Life has a habit of making well laid plans useless, knowing I would be getting some bonus time in my 'play room' because of the weather, I had made a mental list of jobs to do on the Cutter, but it seemed the Admiral had other ideas for my enforced downtime 🤔😠😤.

So very little to show except the skylight now has its glazing. 20210119_215758.thumb.jpg.34fc6061e167564224da60c16f694bfb.jpg20210119_215813.thumb.jpg.d74c554498fcf149b1ad9f1c27a7a96a.jpg20210119_215635.thumb.jpg.135660e6473db83233c5e4b7400ac3c1.jpg

Hi Edward .. This time of year I tend to put the feet up, bit too chilly in the new ship-yard for doing detail work 😊 ..  I build vicariously through ye folks here on MSW instead 😃   Ballier is tucked in nice and snug up there though.

Well winter has come and low temperatures have stopped my going to work, so I'm doing a bit on the Cutter.

Been making the cap rails from odd assortments of wood, which as they are going to be painted black, wood type doesn't matter. Lots of sanding, painting, sanding and painting again🙂

Also still wrestling with the ratchet part of the windlass, I'm on to #5 at the time of writing 😬.

Thanks to everyone for continuing to follow and the likes.

Cheers 😉👍

A little bit more done,  the cap rails are painted and glued, I'm thinking of doing stanchions and rope as on HMC Alert.

20210209_172358.thumb.jpg.dce53e0ec96bf04ca8f401249f88bbfc.jpg20210209_172406.thumb.jpg.cb7b8587b755836d989d5e3204c71ac6.jpg

Finally have a acceptable ratchet for the windlass, just have to decide wether to go with one or two.

20210209_172539.thumb.jpg.e82b8c1a2c6707489f30d900814d74de.jpg

After cutting the ratchet off and dry fitting to the windlass, I still haven't made my mind up. 20210209_173706.thumb.jpg.252b21910761d44058933f4afa4f9ba4.jpg

Still off work due freezing temperatures, although to some -2 to -5°c is not cold 😁

So I've begun to make the rail posts, just 3 for now and will probably use 0.75mm rigging line for the rope rail.20210210_130729.thumb.jpg.464eee6e8b4c905848bc4b49becbf201.jpg

A test, I'm open to suggestions on this as I'm not really sure about it 🤔20210210_130708.thumb.jpg.b0aa06ac4d845e7382a72d1c6b001742.jpgOMG this macro setting shows I need to tidy the painting up.

The stanchions will also be either painted or blackened.

Gratitude for stopping by and watching 😉

Cheers

Nope !  Overnight low at my place was 13 F (-10.5 C), at this posting it is now 17 F (-8 C) and we have 3 inches of fresh snow from yesterday.

Boat looks good. Rope looks fine to me. Stanchions also.  Stay warm !

Another day off and some more time in the shipyard.

Stanchions made, glued and painted. The rope rail is just dry fitted at the moment. 20210211_205443.thumb.jpg.563ed5bb9fc1b2020d8d21c5b9c4ee4c.jpg

I did make a boo-boo and put stanchions round to the prow until I realised that it would get in the way of the swivel posts and timber heads:default_wallbash: It was soon rectified 😏20210211_205356.thumb.jpg.f462f851f292683e3246e6b5622778c2.jpg

Not sure wether to tie off the rail rope to the swivel post or terminate it at the stanchion 🤔20210211_205421.thumb.jpg.a7d56c77c70f31ec8189a3a5bec821ce.jpg

Just have a rail to put in at the poop deck area and then get the black paint out.

Thanks for your patience and interest.

Cheers.

Btw Jack, a tad colder today -3 thru the day and got down to -7°c at night. Somewhere in Scotland dropped to -18°c or thereabouts. Still like a balmy spring day to you but bloody cold to me🥶😂

Your boat looks good,  Edward.  Rope rail looks good too.

Those temperatures are about what we are experiencing here this week; although they report that an area in Montana near Glacier National Park record z morning temp of -36 F earlier this week - they believe it was the lowest in the lower 48 since 1994.  Overnight tonight we are expecting the Arctic blast to hit us windchills down to -10 F.    Forecasting snow for  Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday next .
