The anchors are cut out and assembled.  They just need painted and the banding installed on the wood part of the anchor.

It’s that time of the model where we make the mast and work on finalizing the hull and any remaining fittings.

Quick note to all, bamboo kitchen skewers work beautifully for making masts and yards.  It is a hard wood, and has been carving better than the dowel rods I had been using.

The anchors are finished:

While installing, I realized that I need some cleats to tie them off to, and I need some cleats to tie off to on both masts, so I am going to be making a bunch of cleats.

The anchors are rigged and the hull is almost ready for masts.

The rigging fittings still need finalized and I need to final touchup the paint on the hull and deck/fittings and then seal all of my work.

Thank you for all the likes and for stopping by.

I need to start off by saying that this forum is great inspiration to me.  Whenever I get stuck or don’t want to make something correctly, looking at what some of you are building puts me right back on track.

Tonight, I had another case of this.  The bitt that the bowspirt sits against on the front of Hannah is represented as a rectangular block on the plan.  In pictures in the rest of the book, of the model in the Navy Museum, you can see that is shaped like a normal bitt.

Tonight I tore it off the model and fixed it.

Once I repaint it, I will reinstall it and finish sealing Hannah.

At that point, she will be ready for masts.

I have the main mast and main top mast already carved out.  I have the foremast cut to length, I just need to carve it to shape.

I have been making cleats, too.  I also need to make some shroud cleats.  All of these are being made from craft sticks (popsicle sticks).

I took my Sultana (Model Shipways) out of the case to use as a reference for the rigging, and specifically the belaying of the Hannah, due to similarities in the rigging.

The Sultana was my first ever real ship model.

The masts are assembled and in the process of being painted.

The bowsprit is complete and installed.

I had to add some more rigging fittings from following Sultana, which isn’t entirely unsurprising.0AF41BD3-DC00-455B-B319-6BDE2DB252DB.thumb.jpeg.9471e10a7cf5d225eaeea6a91e50b0da.jpeg

You have got some really constructive work going on there Phil,    the first  set of ringing  "the Stays"   are always  the most time consuming  as they dictate the strength of the masts  and propper alignment, I discovered that with my Pearl kit.

Thanks, OC!

The hardest part for me is always setting up the shrouds and getting the spacing right for the dead-eyes.

I’m pretty much cloning the stays and backstays from the Sultana, but factoring that in with the rigging plan from The Colonial Schooner.  Sultana had a much more complicated rig so I am adapting for the differences.

All ratlines are on.  All futtock shrouds are on.  At this point, I believe that the standing rigging is complete.BA1B1D25-5D8F-41D8-A2CB-D5D36C946441.thumb.jpeg.980373611d15ddbd8fef2c6bb83ed56c.jpegF4F1FFC4-6D69-4BF6-943F-28EFDC43CB6A.thumb.jpeg.f780dc4d2cb03817d052f258b8b1436f.jpeg1B2FA0ED-27C6-405F-80D8-8F41967B6955.thumb.jpeg.52951831712201706d20f5b77a4a4a8d.jpeg497FB120-622F-42D8-8CFC-85550C2DFCAC.thumb.jpeg.053d46e63c2403e6d885fc0e8cd8d5a9.jpegB14DE4DB-51E6-4497-8EAB-C0ADECD1B487.thumb.jpeg.d9657f5077cc7cfcc41ec7dee2da6bc3.jpeg

At this point, it is time to finish the spars, make some shroud cleats and generally make ready for the running rigging.

I am also going to make some sails.  I am using the model, and the plans, for measurements , and the painting off the US Navy’s Historical Command’s website, for a guide of which sails to make.

These consist of a Main Sail, a Fore Sail, a Top Sail and two Jib Sails, for a total of 5.  I will make them the same as I did the ones for the Prince de Neufchatel.

Booms, gaffs and yards are made:AA9D2930-922C-4008-B644-9249337565B3.thumb.jpeg.0bc6780bc86095272f9803bb4eaa26fb.jpeg

There are only 6 total for the entire model.

I was looking at my plans for Victory, yesterday, in preparation for finishing it after I finish this one.  The rigging is much more complicated.  I am looking forward to the challenge.  One of my goals for this year is to finish it.

I found a fitting that doesn’t seem to work out well for me to make, that is the shroud cleat.  So, I ordered some from Syren.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have my shroud cleats from Syren now and I have time to work on my model.

These are very nice:1E3499E2-FFA6-46C1-8384-58320C36F388.thumb.jpeg.6824c8745d46fd145a3bc0b61e03fccf.jpeg

Time to paint them black and install them.

The spars, booms and gaffs are painted.

They need some touch ups and a highlight coat.  After that, I can install blocks and foot ropes.

Next up, I need to attach rigging blocks to the eyebolts on the deck.
