HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Nunnehi (Don) - FINISHED - 1:48

Recommended Posts

After several months collecting parts and tools and finishing other projects, I’ve started my Winchelsea. There are some truly stunning build logs here that I’ve been following closely, and I must admit that I’m a bit intimidated. Between these logs, Chucks tutorials, and members help and suggestions I’m pretty excited to get underway and give it a go. Anyway, off to the races............

Looking good, Don. Take your time fairing those bulkheads and use the remaining char as a guide while doing so. There won't be much of it left after you are done.

Thanks Mike and Rusty, I have been following both of your builds very closely and am deeply impressed and really appreciate your discussions.  I’m several hours into the fairing process with a little bit of initial grinding using a Dremel tool but mostly sanding sticks and paper which is causing issues with my ancient hands. Do either of you use a sander like the Proxxon to help with this process or is Advil the answer?

Thanks again,

Don

Hi Don. I seldom use a dremel for fairing except at the most severe angle. For me it is way to easy to take too much off. Aleve is my friend when fairing.

Don, I like to use wood strips about 1/16" x 3/8" x 10". I adhere sticky back sandpaper to one side that's usually around 180 grit. Works great for doing those long stretches along the hull. For the stern and bow areas I use rounded soft-sanders. http://www.softsanders.com/products/wood

I'm really excited to watch you build this beautiful ship, Don. I find that fairing the hull can be an exercise in uncertainty for me. I never quite know if I've taken off enough or too much even though I'm using a batten to constantly check it. Hang in there! You'll may well be leading the way for me soon...

Good to hear that it's going well, Don.

That's a whole lot of hull to fair! How do you manage the dust? I have to go outside for any significant sanding. Even when I'm just sanding small pieces it seems to get all over everything in the room. Wish I had a dedicated workshop.

Have continued with general fairing and have installed the stern frames and sills. After installing the lower sills I realized that one of the frames was a little out of place so I cut a small bit of filler to correct the gap. After sanding, it looks ok, I think. Was able to dry fit the window frames to verify openings are properly sized - making progress.

Bob,

Sorry I didn’t answer your dust question sooner, old age strikes again😉. I have a small hand vacuum with a hose attachment I got from MicroMart and use it frequently to clean up when hand sanding. If I’m using the Dremel with a disk sander that generates a lot of dust quickly, I wear a mask and also take my work outside if necessary. For the table saw and bench sanders indoors I attach a shop vac, but for large jobs I go outside - hope this helps.

Thanks, Don. I just have a small work desk in the corner of our second bedroom and dust is a problem for me even when I'm sanding just a small amount. I've made the mistake of using my Dremel inside and, as you say, that generates a lot of dust.

My Medway Longboat was displayed near my modeling area and I just noticed that it has a lot of dust on it. Now I need to clean it up. I put too many hours into it for it to end up looking dusty. We have now moved it to another part of the house too. It would be best if it were in a case but we just don't have the space for big display cases.

Great watching your progress on the Winnie.

More work on the stern with the installation of the quarter gallery framing this weekend, and things seem to be coming along well except that I just realized that I should have faired the stern framing more before doing the qgalleries. I’ve just got to say that the build logs here are invaluable and have been exceptional useful!

Have pretty much finished Chapter 1 but may do some additional work on the bollards. I wasn’t happy with the way the  quarter gallery framing came out on the port side so I cut it out and reinstalled. It probably wouldn’t have been noticeable once it is fully planked but it just wasn’t pleasing to my eye. Anyway, on to Chapter 2...............

A bit of an update..........

l’ve started the planking process and have completed the portion from the wales up. While it’s not anywhere near the level of some of the other builds here, it’s starting to look like a ship - lots of cleanup in the future!

Thanks, Don. I hope to be back in the boatyard pretty soon. The rigging instructions are useless and the plans are confusing so I have some detective work to do. My son is also home for a visit so I'm taking a break for a few days.
