USS Constitution by Jasseji - Revell - 1/96 - PLASTIC - ON HOLD - Most Parts Destroyed/Damaged

Recommended Posts

In the meantime i fitted new belaying pins to the pinrails (the short one got warped, will have to redo it from styrene):

Also, i am wondering if the pins arent a bit too thick...

I have finished painting the gundeck, just some minor touchups and i can start lining up the clutter

I agree with you on the carronades, they're way too expensive. That could add up in a hurry. That's when a Sherline lathe could be handy...you could pay for the lathe with what the cannons would cost. They get a little pricey too when you throw in some of the tools to make it work. Also expensive. Plastic works good...lol

these are boxwood pins i have - i just used a small drill and did it by hand (turning the drill-bit in my fingers) - it works and allows control without vibration danger from a dremel or so ;)

The plastic is not too hard to drill through - took me less than half an hour each rail for all holes

i did screw up the position on one of them tho and busted the short rail because it is very thin

Smart idea to paint the hull halves before cementing them.  I have quite a few ideas of how I would do things differently from the instructions now (of course it's too late for any of these ideas to matter).

I also really like the copper color on your hull.  Can I ask specifically what you used???  I am hand painting my copper hull and its a huge pain....

Hi, sorry for lack of progress guys, it's "GF wants to go out in the afternoon" season and the weather here is so nice that we spend each day on the bike or in the lake ;)

Also i got a new car so a bit of expenses and free time are invested in it now (repairing front grille using modelling putty and evergreen strips :D)

@RadMan: i just used the copper paint from Revell + No. 3 brush, but i thinned it down quite a bit so applying it was easier.

It took me 3 layers i believe + of course black primer (thin single layer)

I've pulled mine off the shelf and will be following along as I build. This is my first ship of this scale and I've already glued the hull halves together......

I like the idea of deck clutter and replacement cannons. the ones in the kit aren't very good. I hadn't given any thought to thickening the hull and wonder if its too late as I have it glued together. I'll hunt around for a source for strip styrene or something similar I can paint.

If I can chime in...

The bulwark is not full thickness in the plastic kit and the styrene gets the thickness back to a more correct scale. I would have done this modification on my build but I was past the point of the addition before I learned about the problem. With or without the changes it is a great build. I look forward to following.

Thanks lambsk for jumping in ;)

Sorry to all, i didnt have time neither for the forums, nor for the model recently as i am on an extended Business Trip now since August :/

Also, i am starting another build, this time scale 1:1 "Weekend Shelter Wooden House, Mountain Region" where each single penny has to go into.

The build starts in Spring, as soon as snow melts in the Polish Mountains ;)

Mspedale6102: as said already, the plastic hull has a thikness of roughly 2mm, which according to 1/96 scale would be around 20cm, wheras the connie's hull has a thickness of at least 53cm (if not 60+, dont have sources now by hand).

This "upgrade" changes the looks and makes the open gunports more realistic from the outside, as you see the bulwark when you are looking from an angle and not only a thin sheet of plastic.

It adds the impression of "Real Armour".

I took the idea from Force9's build btw ;)

Refer to these images of the real thing to see what i am talking about:

My progress since the last photos is totally ZERO.

I actually only painted the gundeck and some supports, everything is hidden in the box now and waiting for any spare time (not going to happen soon)

Hello everyone, as i have seen MSW pdf listings of build logs i have to report in here - the kit got destroyed unfortunately, during transport while moving apartments the box was left in the sun and most of the parts got warped - the only thing really left intact is the hull and the sail kit and i do not know if i'm really inclined to re-start her.

Considering i'd have to replace all parts, i'm more inclined to get a Wooden POB kit now that i'm settled in finally.

I am marking this Build as On-Hold indefinitely.
