Nice work on such an old mould

Citadel Agrax Earthsade is what a lot of figure painters use to wash their models and bring out the detail. This guy is pretty good as he keeps it nice and simple.

  • 1 month later...

I finally finished this one.   I figured it was too much to bring out the airbrush just for a rudder,  so I thought to use a brush.......it turned into a real trial!  I painted it once..........then a second coat seemed to make the first coat release from the rudder in chunks!    so........clean it off and repaint,  only to have ghosting rule the day.  I changed the paint to a newer bottle and the process went a bit better.  once satisfied,  the model was quickly finished off.....that meant adding the control lever in the rudder........gluing it on the model.........and connecting the cables.  so Ltn. Josef Carl Jacob's plane is done! :)

Denis, nice job with the a/c. Taking pictures of black objects is a bear.

Maybe a light gray primer under the white areas could help. I know yellow and red are hard to achieve the right color, unless undercoated with white or light gray. I've been reading in the model RR websites about guys undercoating the typical rusty red freight cars with a yellow primer. And Badger just happens to make a yellow acrylic primer.

thanks all........if the decals would have been correct,  I very well could have modeled the Baron's plane :)   I was pleased to see that the decals from the Roden model worked out for it.  I was thumbing through the log,  when I came to the picture of Jacob's plane that I posted.......I don't see to much of a difference.  I guess I did what I set out to do.....very happy with the outcome.  if Santa is good to me......or if I meet Santa's approval as a 'good boy',  my list has a pair on it.........a Dr 1 and a D VII.  I'm hoping I can find a pilot that flew both.......if not,  I'll put my own spin on a camo.

I have some of the Billing's primer,  but it did not fare well with the paint I was using.......for some reason or another.   it may also have been that it's as old as the rest of the Billing's paint that I have left.  I'm finding more dried up bottles.........soon it will all be gone.   other than the fact that it smells terrible,  it really isn't a bad paint.  it dries to a hard finish.....the gloss is nice,  and it covers reasonably well.  I agree........lighter colors do better with a primer coat under them......especially if the plastic is a color other than white.  this model was a red plastic...the black covered well,  but the white had a dickens of a time losing the red tint of the plastic.

thanks again to all who looked in..........glad you enjoyed watching :)

thanks Egilman :)    the Fokker D VII went into service just before they pulled the Dr 1's......the wing failures were getting to be too much.  true....it wouldn't be too hard to come up with a pilot to model a pair for.......the decaling is another story ;)   I do hope I find them under the tree......I mentioned that they are a pair,  since they are produced by the same company.....I forget who.....but they look very nice.  actually,  I could go with a squadron motif,  like Rabin's ravens or Berthoud's boys.....both had ties to Jasta 18.   I'll keep my fingers crossed on the big day.

My approach to this would be to find a D.VII pilot who flew a DR.I It will be easier to come up with a D.VII's markings and then see if you can locate an image of his DR.I

The problem is going to be there weren't a lot of distinctive markings for the D.VII's mostly purple/blue lozenge patterns with little else...... They were getting to the point where they just didn't have the time or the confidence to be so brazen anymore being very late in the war and it being clear that they couldn't win.... It wasn't fun anymore.....

Air combat was maturing and losing it's charm, it was becoming just as nasty as the lines on the ground....

oh there were still some colorful aircraft flying.......but you are correct about the lozenge.   lots of pilots liked the camo and based their personal touches around it.   there are decals for it as well.   one could really have fun with it  ;)   we'll see what happens.

My friend, you have done a beautiful job, but I have spotted a very small error - the fuselage decals are on the wrong sides. Look again closely, the inclined top & bottom edges should follow the angle of the fuselage, in other words the high side of the decal edge should align with the high side (fatter end) of the fuselage. I only noticed as this gave me trouble when I built this kit. Not a big deal and barely noticeable but you seem to have an eye for detail so I thought I’d point it out.

Link to comment

that would be more noticeable with the insignia     I saw that later after I had put them on.  one had already split on me {the flame area},  so I decided to leave them as they were.  thanks for the very kind word.....this one was the easiest one I've done......the black put everything in my favor.  not only that,  but even though they were one scale size short,  the decals worked well on the model.  the decal sheet supplied in the kit were wrong for the model subject.......if I can get another Dr 1,  I will make sure that it IS an F 1,  so I can use the sheet......perhaps I can do Foss's plane.  I have the face for the cowl.

I did see a kit that was missing the decals,  but I didn't want to shake the Santa tree too severely........didn't want him to get mad at me  :D   I do have a pair on my list though.......Dr 1's and D VII's are my favorite planes,  and I had these two on the list before I saw it.

another problem I'm having,  is that someone has been taking inventory of my stash {and current projects},  and may make future purchases harder to get approval for.  now I'm sure that I have some in the stash that will prove to be interesting,  but seeing others that might be even more interesting,  may get passed over.  I doubt that this scenario would come to pass,  but it means that I need to pick and choose what subjects deserve merit  ;)

   I'll keep you posted  ;)

Around here it is more like DOLLS, STUFFED BEARS/ANIMALS, and most of all JEWELRY.:D The only ones she can even attempt to hide would be the jewelry but they are sneaky and get you to buy it in the first place so they don't even try. I tell you the system is rigged!

Then all of a suddenly somewhere through the course of the year a new rifle gets added to the collection they can't tell one from the next.I almost bidded on had it highlighted 5 Japanese rifle three with mums a couple of those with mums 75/85% RIA expected at auction 1100/1600 for all five. This was well within the trigger but just to many doctor bills of late.I see a possibility for next year just depends how the winds blow I do not have a single Japanese rifle in the collection. ;)

The only firearm I have bought since long before I retired and no longer had to carry one daily, was for my wife! She insisted that she wanted to have her own. Now days I'm not even certain where her gun is! The last time I saw it was when I took her out to get some practice and of course I was allowed to clean it!

Around here it is more like DOLLS, STUFFED BEARS/ANIMALS, and most of all JEWELRY.:D The only ones she can even attempt to hide would be the jewelry but they are sneaky and get you to buy it in the first place so they don't even try. I tell you the system is rigged!

Stuffed Bears/Animals  springs to mind that scene from the Film Lost Boys  in Grandads  house  - he loads of them  - "Scarry stuff"
