Battle of Waterloo Attack on La Haye Sainte Farm 1/56 28mm

I recall many years ago, there was a series (on old PBS maybe?) that had battle reenactments using figures on a terrain board of huge size.  Hills, trees, building etc. were on it.  They would walk through the battle showing before and after movements and other important details.   I don't recall Waterloo but I do recall some American battles (Revolutionary and Civil War) along with some WWI and WWII battles.

Its a massive hobby still  Mark,    so much investment goes into it   - real stratergies  go on  with the war gamers.

Evening all,    I decided to have a change from my aircraft  and  have a go at a few of the figures,   as I have a sprue  of French Line infintry  this is what I have started with, they come as  torso's  and seperate heads/arms/legs  and back packs, the main theme of the sprue is line walking infintry  however I was able to make a few in attacking role position by slightly correcting there hand positions - sanding the arm faces a bit this sometimes created a gap but was easy fixed with putty.

I decided to mix them up with a few different poses  including one soldier who picked up another rifle and is running with Two.

They are not primed yet just assembled.

Oh  - I  have also made one as an Elite Guard  just to see how they look.

Yep he is Ken, he wont  (very much doubt)   be in the Dio   as they attacked the main  Britiah lines later in the day, and mostly  avoided getting caught up in the action against the Farm.

May need some strong vision augmentation, such as an Optivisor or similar. I use mine over my glasses, too. Takes a little practice trying to apply paint or glue, since your depth of view is off a bit with the device.  Have fun and don't try to paint more than a handful at a time. Had to do that when I worked on a club project building N Scale (1:160) buildings with double hung windows. Nearly went cross-eyed doing those 4 wood and 2 clear plastic part windows ;).

A trick that can work rather well is to paint raised stripes like cross belts first and to then paint the uniform base coat up to it.  This would work especially well in your case as these details appear to be molded in heavy relief.

Roger

Thank you Roger,   I also know a lot of  the affect is in the washes/high lighting and dry brushing.

Evening all,   on the back of my Mossie Dio  - "No peace for the wicked"   so i decided to start  one of the French line infintry,    first I gave the face and hands my flesh colour  I followed this with a wash, then another slightly dry  touch up over the face and hands,   next I  worked on the  hat  - this is a basic flat Black with a Red and White plume  and a yellow/gold  detail diamond, I followed this with another gentle wash and a slight dry brush.

Evening all,   I did abit more on my 2nd Infantry Brigade  Rifleman,  they are very fiddly  and need good sharp fine paintbrushes  lots of light and a magnifier, its a case of  working on the main colours then trying to reach the awkward bits hidden  like the cross belts behind his musket,  I am trying give him a dirtied appearance  as he would have been on the field  from all the mud.

I hesitate to give advice to an accomplished modeler, but here’s my setup for painting figures.  The Duco cement is the old model airplane cement, Maybe Ambroid in the UK?  It easily separates with a single edged razor blade, although my figures are metal.  The little hand vice is handy for positioning the figure for hard to get to areas.

Your guy looks great.  Nice work.

From what I recall reading,  it would have been quite muddy in the valley as it had rained most of the previous day and all night, so maybe brown boots and gaiters are called for😁

Are you going to have an artillery piece on the road outside the farm?

I think that was a little later in the day  when the farm  was over run by the French  and the French canon came up, so guess they  wouldn't  be there in the time frame I am going for,   I am aiming for roughly middle of the battle when the farm was still held  by a mixture of  Green/Grey   and  Red coat  KGL  and a few 95th  (Sharps)  outside  near the wall  supporting the KGL, while the french was attacking with Line Infantry  and  Cuirasseriers.

OC,  I used to do AD&D type miniatures like orcs, dwarves in my deep dark past.   One way I found to do them and not waste paint by cleaning the brush multiple times was to do like all the flesh on each one first, then hair, beards, and details.  It seemed to be faster that way.  By the time I had all the faces painted, the first ones were dry and I could go onto the next color.... wife, life, etc. permitting of course.

Ended with a "little guys and creatures" assembly line.

Fond memories from back then like:  Dungeon Master: "You're in a round room.  The treasure is in the corner."... Players: "We got the treasure and left the room."  Laughter and beer all around.

Evening all,   next stage trying out a  few Cuirassiers  I got  on a single spue  (cheaper that way only a couple of quid each)    I started with the Horse  After cleaning the two sections up just a couple of seams  but not realy an issue, then I did a couple of coats  of Oak Brown, then some washes  followed by the harness in Black..

The lighting makes it look darker than it is as my lamp is dead overhead.
