Popeye, Genie is good one, and He offered it to me, but I refused. It is great pleasure when slow appearing of proper lines confirm that my technique with short strips is not mistake, and I do not want to waive of that. He was not quite at will, and that was a reason why He sent me to sleep

Back to the title ...
 

The best in this business is that while sanding, the brain works by itself, and consider next steps. Also, all my life I refuse to go " over the path of elephants," but always try invent something new ( usually successful, sometimes not)

 

So

 

After analyzing photographs and drawings during and over sanding, I concluded that the visual lines of the ship's side is mostly determined with the position of guarding moldings on the ship's side (I dont know is it proper english word). Especially in the situation brought me my way of planking

 

Stated that, before the final puttying, I need first to put guarding moldings down on position to get those lines, with attend to putty and sand them latter to proper shape

Yes, I know, it all seems so untidy and messy for now, but putting and sanding is far away to be over

 

The question was - to plank second layer first, and after that to glue guarding moldings, what is the most usual way, with risk that 3D lines of ship side are not properly shaped, or, to do something to assume proper lines first, and to assume 3D lines to them

 

There must be applied some extra works to bow and stern for proper lines and shape, and I really need that lines of guarding moldings to assume proper shape of whole side view of model. About that, plans are little confusing. For instance, angle on wooden block for stern does not match the angle on picture of stern above ... 

 

 

Also, on bow, as it can be seen on upper photo of plan detail, there is drown some undefined and confusing slat which do not correspond with real Cutty. That situation with plans I have requires a lot of imagination, visualization and reflection, and all that lead right forward to improvisation

 

Oh, so many " ...tion" words

 

I decided for second option, bearing in mind that I can always (before planking), if needed. cut off and sand to zero quard  moldings ( made of balsa) and glue them new from begining

NEXT BIG QUESTION -  BACK OF THE STERN - PROPER ANGLE

 

Advice is needed !!!

 

As I mentioned in post #120, there is a "little" problem with back of the stern proper angle

 

On plan I have, there are two different angles, (or I am blind, or I am dummy)

 

 

 

Looking on photos ( Google) there are two different situatons

 

First - old Cutty before fire

 

 

This image suggests that there is relatively gentle angle

 

Second - Cutty today

 

 

 

 

 

 

Those images suggests that there is more sharper angle than  WAS BEFORE FIRE, and surely more sharper than I have on plans

 

I have dilemma - what option to chose

 

Or this is only because of angle of taking a photos ?

Here is a drawing detail showing the actual form of Cutty Sark's counter. It was made after precise measurements in the ship itself.

 

The drawing is by a Dutch fellow model builder, Joost van Griethuysen, member of the NVM (Dutch Model Builders Association). It belongs to a set he made to update and complement one he made in the nineteen seventies. Unfortunately, he died during the process. He sent me the complete set but I'm not sure if all revisions were published by the Association. I'll check and let you know. If so, you might order the complete drawing set from them.

 

I myself started building a large scale model of the Cutty Sark but it didn't make much progress as other hobbies got in the way (a luxury problem!). However, the process didn't stop definitely...

Hello, Nenad,

 

I have found that the curvature in the stern area is a very hard area to deal with.  There are three different curves:  First; the natural curvature of your planking that leads to the counter;   Then, the curve of the iron bulwarks as they wrap around the stern.  ( I did this with 1/32" basswood).  Finally, the last 1/4" that I steam bent into place; these lie vertically.

I am also a big fan of G. Campbell's  Cutty Sark plans.  with risk of copyright infringement, I could send you some copies,( but I didn't say or type that in my right mind.)

Curvature  of side view of stern made me pretty confused, and photos do it much more. With Lou`s advice and drawing in post, I think I shall find a way to resolve right or semi-right curvature. Thank you very much for the support and very kind offer. I think the way I work and ambition with my model from start do not require so studious and extra precise approach ( as Campbell etc), except sometimes if I occasionally bump into a dilemma as noticed ahead. Thanks any way. As a attorney, I must note that I must be cautious about copy-rights ...

 

I am again on road, in two-day business travel in South Serbia, and my model is suffering a lot without me to cuddle and watch her, and to putty and sand her gently ...

Hi There Nenad...Thanks for asking...I concur Completely with Lou Van Wijhe...He has done extensive research, and constructed as many, or more (!!!) Cuttys' as I have, and the angle you're attempting to verify is proven by the drawings that he's submitted...!!! It's good to see him back on board, as I was following his (Very Impressive) build log a year or so ago... Take care, and keep it up...!!!  Kim

Finally I get out to workshop

 

Main task for today was to assume proper angle of the Cutty¨s counter

 

This was situation before starting

 

 

And thanks to picture Lou van Wijhe was kind to post, it is now clear what had to be done.

 

First I set the upper auxiliary leading line form balsa ( multiparted, super glued, round sanded, later I`ll reduce the width and depth), than with Dremel tool on small speed sanding gently counter to proper angle.

 

After that, the second auxiliary lead line was seated (also multiparted, also super glued, also round sanded. Standard glue is no strong enough, and slow binding) , and then was time for some precisely puttying

 

Little mess now, but tomorrow when putty get hard, with sanding seems that it wil be O.K.

 

It seems must first make special "tool" for sanding that narrow spaces

Circumstances forced me to that technic. 30 years ago with S.Maria I tried with boiled wather, with steam, with some tips and tricks I read about and some on my own, but I was not satisfied with results. With S.Maria finally I put long strips and then fill large rest holes with mix of gypsum and wood glue, and sanding it until I die ... And then cover all hull with paper strips .....  That was 30 years ago, when there was no chance to read something about ship modelling ( ...Former socialistic Yugoslavia with no chance to order and to pay something from other country. Even not to know what is on other side of border ...)

 

When in CS came to planking phase, I tried it again, but no, no, no, not at all. After that tries and fails, I did some Google and Flicker and ... photo-research on CS, that lead me to the next: Coopering for clipper ship is essential for good look, and it in model covers all eventual little mistakes under it. On the other side, to the upper part of hull, it is clear that individual boards are extremlly narrow compared to the dimensions of the ship, and there are painted in black - fully covered with paint !!! That lead to conclusion - second layer of planking must be made from thin strips of veneer or thin balsa wood, not wider than 3-4 mm. The rest is coopering. Doing it all on a first layer is impossible mission for me, and that were reasons I decide to try something new, to imitate solid hull. Planking with short strips (with adding extra ribs), it is no doubt on it, surely lead to proper lines

 

Of course, there are, and there will be a lot of additional partial putting layers and precise sanding to assume proper shape, all seems messy confused and disordered, but lines that appear on ship under sanding and putty seems to be proper and well looking

Just look in topic about month or two back, and I can see where I was and where I am now ... It is going slowly but constantly forward

Starting on march 13th
Whole may I was playing making 66 dead-eyes ... and 66 ropes for it...
Planking start on 06th of june until 14th of July , sanding start two days after

it goes ...

Today I am not in office, because the terrace is on line, and Admiral is jumping on my head whole week ago ... And as usually , early morning I decided to start cutting granite and applied cement adhesive, ... and electric power failure in whole part of Belgrade I live.... until 18h ...without electric power, I can not cut tiles on dimension, i can not mix mortar ... nervousness grows to the sky ...mother-in-law wants to drive her to the mortuary stone cutter ... bank dont work without electric and I can not pick up cash ... calls calls calls ( one day I must try how far I can hit my cellphone) ... battery on cellphone empty ... in friday on business trip again ... meils meils meils ....

Nah ...

I can not wait until 10 of august to disapear ... vacation !!!!!!!!

For a beginner in modeling ( as me), a bit of research is really necessary, if you want to make decent model. Somebody on MSW said: "... I had no idea what I'm going in ...".

 

Heaven and hell at the same time...

 

Today, I have only an idea what any singular rope on rigging is for, and how it works. How are they fitted, how they move. Research is interesting for me, and I dont want just to follow poor rigging instructions I have, when time comes to try to do it.

 

Surely, there are all other topics on MSW and I have to learn a lot, but there is enough time for that.

 

First to finish sanding, then planking, then deck furniture, then masts ... etc etc, long time in front of me to learn. But I do not hurry.
