Usually called rubbing strakes - or fenders.

Very nice work. That's a good looking model, very crisply made.

Excellent work. My approach seems to be so much different than yours. I decided with the first hull planking to not taper the planks but rather

follow the pictures in the book.  You have done an excellent job.  I will be looking at your build more in the following days.

I think your approach is good! One of the reasons why I have chose to taper first planking was to train & prepare for the second one. This was my first planking job ever and I wanted to make it look good.

A little update here :)

Did a boat from the actual wood instead of the metal one:

boat_2.thumb.jpeg.8a8445766eaa92bf7aaca011e196c788.jpeg

The actual size of this boat is quite small and I got all my fingers covered in superglue... Some glue got on the boat too. Will sand that down later.

I am preparing this ship for rigging:

Making progress. I like the little wood boat-the only way to go. I was thinking of carving one out of balsa wood.

Can tell you a secret - I have covered metal boat with wood strips. It was way easier to make it that way.

Nano sized update.

According to the Amati, underside of the forecastle meant to me a bare plywood. Had to cover it with walnut strips:

Did some block assemblies that attaches to deck. For all future builders I suggest enlarging holes in blocks to 0.95-1mm so it is easier to pass thread through it when rigging.

I have also drilled like 14 holes on the deck for various parts placement. I am trying to prepare everything before masts are glued in place and access is still very good.

And another little update.

I was working on crows nest. Walnut was surprisingly hard. I had to enlarge hole at the bottom for the main mast and drill holes for block holders:

image12.thumb.jpeg.85ee5f193576e949e8e09382055b81be.jpeg

I have finished the bottom of the main mast:

image9.thumb.jpeg.6c3fa58135e1e7be9f0a2b1ddfa42db9.jpeg

Then started work on anchors:

image4.thumb.jpeg.11010bf9994301464139cc4905c5b551.jpeg

"Third hand" tool that I originally bought for soldering and working on my racing drones is very useful when working on the model ships:

image2.thumb.jpeg.05082b79176c3c0a0820f7d2aa266190.jpeg

I will figure out how to add "weight" to the anchor rope later :)

Glued blocks to deck in various places:

I have received this baseboard from Amati and the quality just isn't there for using it without fully painting it. The wood is very orange and there are two distinct colors of it... I have tried staining it, but no stain I have or I am able to buy is able to cover the orange shade.

I am going to put this model on hold until I am able to source the baseboard locally. Want to fix it in place before gluing on the masts..

Hi

I just dropped in to see the fine work you are doing.  I have resumed building but will be interrupted for a while. I left a post for you on my log.

I just ordered metal pedestals from Amati and I am waiting for oak baseboard :) It  will take a while... Can't really do anything because, I want to glue masts when ship is fixed in place...

Looking good. Nice crisp work.

I don't know what the shields on the right signify in the picture above, but the ones on the left are Queen Isabella's  personal coat of arms, showing the lion and castle of the two kingdoms of Leon and Castile which merged in 1301. This is the coat of arms she had in her own right, before she married Ferdinand and became Queen of all Spain.

In a few hours I have managed to glue front-most mast and tie it down... It was way harder than I expected, everything was so tight and I had to try multiple times until I get it right.. :)

I was not able to figure out what I am doing wrong until I found redhawk Santa Maria build on modelissmo.net (https://www.modellismo.net/forum/modelli-terminati/61121-wip-santa-maria-2.html).

It included this blueprint:

1529469746_legaturabompresso.jpg.921a3e61c2c5b7539c2d74ede38da9c3.jpg

After I saw it everything clicked in my head finally and I was able to achieve the desired result. I hope this helps for future builders. I would love to have a better instructions for this ship, but maybe it is more fun to work this way. I have spent countless hours studying other people work on this kit.
