Next...I was tinkering with the nameboard for Glory in my scale. The name board is 14ft long by 1ft high. I carved in the floral petals and then painted gold. Fixing the lettering was a bit tricky in this scale. I could do better and will...since this is simply a test example as i perfect the carving and tools used. One is posted next to the rule for scale and size. Rob Rob, it's been a crazy, busy work day so I haven't had time to do a decent reply. I still feel like our Bow profile isn't as aggressive above and below the waterline as the images of Glory in Seattle gives me the impression she was. I'm working on tracings of the close up of her Figurehead to compare to her Bow profile in the 1907 scene. At the San Pedro dock The bowsprit's relative shortness compared to where her figurehead ends reveals some foreshortening, since Glory isn't exactly square to the viewer for an exact broadside. It's subtle but definitely there. Another item which might affect her sheer is location of her Starboard loading Port. In Vladimir's excellent profile, this key component is still a little too close to the main mast when it's actually slightly closer to the end of the Foreshrouds. Why should this matter? Because the locked in height at that location has been established by counting strakes. It's not the lowest part of the her sheer, which is in the middle of the main shrouds. By correcting the dock's location, will that affect her profile? Finally, the crease line at the Stern looks like it's where the iron ends of her Shrouds all would mount to and is quite likely to align with the lower end of the Naval Hoods. If that's the case, it gwould make the depth 3'6". Review McKay's sketch of his twin Packets, the same thin line is there too. I realize these are "nit pickey" little details, which is why I referred to them as 5%. Then again, the devil's always in the details too, aren't they? Meanwhile, I hate to be "scale police" but at 1:96th a 14' nameboard would be 1 & 3/4th" long by 1/8" high. Tell me to not mention these things if it bothers you. Nope..you are correct...the board is a bit high to the scale, thus not representing the true measurement....and the board is still to long. This is the test prototype. I will correct all errors and then cast the board in duplicating paste and then I can mass produce them all exactly alike. I'll need four. Good eye. Ironically it's an advertisement from the manufacturer of coarkboard that was installed to convert her into a gigantic refrigeration plant. ClipperFan Posted May 3, 2021 Share #945 Posted May 3, 2021 (edited) Another fascinating article and beautiful painting I found was from Jan 27, 1923 by the famous seaman artist Charles R Patterson who actually last saw her in service as a fully functioning sailing vessel in 1899. At the time he wrote his reminiscence, there was still serious anticipation that McKay's last Clipper would still be relocated back to Boston to be eventually restored. The larger image of the same painting was from May that same year, in tribute to the lost vessel.... To contribute towards accuracy of the name board, I've included another more clear image of the sketch done of the actual board in the video. Since I had no idea of length at the time, I rough estimated it based on an assumption that it was a foot tall. Anyhow, rough wooden formation of letters is accurate as taken from the video stills. Now about the lettering....because my version is so small..the font may be slightly different...those wings on the G, L and Y might be an issue. We'll just have to see. One thing I do appreciate about 1/96...is you can respectfully forego some detail based upon inability or inaccessibility. I don't expect anyone to view my model with a magnifying glass. One can afford to be more discriminating when the scales get larger. I scouted for planks to gather for hull.actually im thinking of wideness of planks, observing model shipways flying fish i will widen palnks according to ratio margin. so i elan to set on ( metric here 4 or 5 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick european basswood as it prvoee ne the best material cutwise and bending wise so i can taper down to 2 mm at the bow..... i like it enormously. and its fairly cheap . ( by the way Lime as it is called in my country is national tree of country so it has very long carving tradition as its perfect for sculpting and violin work. ) I will have to get it sawn to my liking. if i count it should be smaller based on original Planks dimensions 6" - 2 mm is pretty much unusable by modeling standards in case i want to taper and bend towards bow and aftwards as well. i dont have window to dive into it properly and focus on her at the moment or anytime soon. i made a promis to myself that i will start with the autmun rains so 4 months till than but when there is a window i will work small bits. sanding bulkheads... and i want to put wooden blocks as suports for bulkheads as those are not so near to withstand sanding...so these are my actual doings...
