Hello From Texas

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Ive been searching this site for a couple of weeks now and really enjoy the builds.  I’m impressed with the friendship and advice I see on builds and signed up to be a part of a great community.

I’m basically new to shipbuilding.  I built the Revell USS Constitution WAY back in High School but haven’t built a ship model since.  Have been building aircraft for a while though.

I work in plastic, but would like to build a wooden ship, but I just can’t wrap my head around doing the planking!  Lol!

Thanks for such a great site!

Welcome to Model Ship World.  There are a lot of outstanding plastic builds on this site, but I hope you take a stab at building a wooden ship model.  Planking can be fun if it is done right.  There are several tutorials on planking on this site.  These can be accessed by using the search function or clicking on the "More" tab at the top of this page.

Welcome to MSW.   Here's a link to planking tutorials which should help you wrap your head around it.  Planking is hard, just requires patience and a bit of knowledge and the tutorials help.

I would suggest to read through the link provided by Mark.
There are several easier kit that doesn't have complicated planking.

Patience and more patience is what you need.

Welcome to MSW, Peregrine! There's a good section here on wooden model kits suitable for people just starting out

These are all simple enough to try without overwhelming yourself, the instructions are generally pretty clear (and if you have problems, there's probably already a build log on MSW for the same model that will help, and if all else fails ask a question. Everybody's very helpful and supportive.)

And when you do decide what to make, be sure to start a build log. Great way to get help and advice (and we get to see nice pictures of your build under way).
