Prewar, the bulkheads were white or very light grey and the hangar deck was dark deck grey.... They remained that way up to late '42 when the orders came down to remove all flammable materials below decks not consistent with operational needs... And another thing to note, that order was specifically directed to the Pacific fleet, not the Atlantic fleet, (at least not initially) Admiral King didn't make it a fleet wide order till the middle of '43... so if you were building a plane on a Pac. Flt ship I would say yes, bare metal would be appropriate, but your markings indicate an Atlantic fleet squadron flying from an escort carrier on convoy duty.... (late '42 early '43 based upon the aircraft markings) Deck grey would be appropriate and the most likely scenario.... Your images show both believe it or not... and the color shot shows a deck grey floor, light grey bulkheads, light grey overhead.... The aircraft is also in the same color scheme, (pattern) as yours is with similar markings... Prewar aircraft grey period, ('38-'41) it would in general be a typical hanger deck prewar.... (and for the Atlantic Fleet throughout the early war period) Just my opinion brother.... she's looking beautiful.... Still not sure about putting it on a diorama or just leaving it as is, but this has been a real learning experience for sure - WW2 aircraft, colors, flight decks versus hangar decks, etc. Not to mention, learning how to really chop up a kit and add resin details. Maybe making a base that is a dark gray base with sorta big squares etched out like in this picture would get me there. Then I can add a mechanic or two and lay the panels down and have a nice little scene. I started looking at hot wire cutters to be able to cut styrofoam to make plane and ship dioramas, so maybe I should just go with the flow. I've been thinking about what to pull off the shelf next, and I'm leaning towards staying with US WWII aircraft and going with the Accurate Miniatures TBF-1C kit. Landlubber Mike Posted December 23, 2022 Author Share #217 Posted December 23, 2022 This one has been close to the finish line for quite some time as I got a bit bored with it and moved on to other projects. Just about done though now, just have to add the wings and finish the diorama. Warning - even though the kit instructions say you can model it with the canopy open, the sliding piece just does not fit. I came to find out that others had a similar issue, with one person cracking the part to get it to fit. Thankfully, the eBay auction seller included a Taurus canopy, and I was able to replace the kit part. The Taurus canopy was a bit loose though, so when i pressed it to the fuselage, a bit of glue spread further than I was hoping. 🤬 Oh well, not much I can do. I almost threw the whole thing out when clear coating it - I ended up getting spiderwebbing in a few places when using one of the Mr. Color clear products. Even got it when trying out the rattle can version. I think it just pooled too heavily. My spray booth has these really bright LEDs, and sometimes I can't tell how much of a coat is being applied with certain colors and with the clear products. Live and learn. The good news is that was able to lightly sand off the clear coat, reapply a bit of dark wash, and re-apply the clear coat with no issue. Whew! I did spend a bunch of time trying to figure out how to put it in a diorama on a carrier hangar deck, as there aren't many pictures out there of what the flooring at least looks like. I did get a diorama base finished though, and at this point, just have to finish painting some of the mechanics to go along with it. Thanks Kevin! Funny thing is on this one, I painted the lines fairly sharp, then tried to dial it back a bit and have softer edges as that is what this Atlantic camo scheme called for. I ended up using thinned Gull Gray paint applied via a sponge to try and get the effect. Did the best I could 😐 On the Buffalo, I could find nothing indicating whether the lines were sharp or soft. I decided to go with soft, given how the green and olive complemented each other. I used the blue tack method to separate the side and overhead camo from the sky-blue-gray under camo, but did the side and overhead camo (the green and olive) freehand. Probably a bit steep on the difficulty level given that it is my fifth plastic plane model, but I'm quite happy with how it came out. Given that the engine and other panels were removed, I tried to model it as maintenance work on a hangar deck of an aircraft carrier. Couldn't find good color pictures of what the deck looked like, but some of the pictures showed what appeared to be larger squares that were dark gray and/or metallic in color, so I went that route. It's been interesting trying to learn this diorama stuff - a little more complicated than it appears. To me though, having figures and/or a scene around the model helps to show scale, and especially, helps bring it to life. Best of all, it's fun, and allows you bring a little creativity to the project. You've really been an invaluable resource, so thank you. Hope I can repay all your help some day. On the deck grey, I had to guess from black and white pictures so I'm glad I wasn't too far off. I started with black primer, then sprayed a thinned coat of a dark grey over it, leaving some of the black to show. Then I sprayed a very thinned layer of a dark metallic (I think it was something like gunmetal gray) to get a little bit of a metallic finish to it. It was a comedy of errors and took me three tries to get it the base right. I had the color ok, but the first time I tried using white glue to adhere the plastic card to the wooden base, and a week later the base was all rippled and bubbling up. Second time I think I accidentally spilled CA on it, so had to toss the attempt. Third time seemed to finally work, but I came very close to throwing it and the model out the window!
