Beginner Suggested Ship Model and Brand

Hello Everyone,

I am looking to build my first ever wooden model ship. Reading a couple of posts on this forum I am completely aware that choosing a beginner model with very clear instructions is key, having said so I would be grateful if you could point me towards which brands and models are more suited for beginners.

Welcome!

My first actual model ship was Model Shipways Sultana.

Building: 1:64 HMS Revenge (Victory Models plans)

1:64 Cat Esther (17th Century Dutch Merchant Ships)

On the building slip: 1:72 French Ironclad Magenta (original shipyard plans)

On hold: 1:98 Mantua HMS Victory (kit bash), 1:96 Shipyard HMS Mercury

Favorite finished builds:  1:60 Sampang Good Fortune (Amati plans), 1:200 Orel Ironclad Solferino, 1:72 Schooner Hannah (Hahn plans), 1:72 Privateer Prince de Neufchatel (Chapelle plans), Model Shipways Sultana, Heller La Reale, Encore USS Olympia

Goal: Become better than I was yesterday

Welcome to MSW, Mark!

When you decide which kit to build, I'd highly recommend you start a build log - instructions here: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/24705-before-you-post-your-build-log-please-read-this-starting-and-naming-your-build-log/

It's a great way to get help and advice and encouragement. And don't get too intimidated by the excellence of some of the builds on MSW - the skill level ranges from complete duffer to total expert. We're all about helping, not criticising - we all had to start sometime, and we all make mistakes (even the demigods of modelling - they just make much more interesting ones than us mere mortals).

Hi Mark and welcome to Model Ship World. You have received some good advice on selecting your first ship model.  If you are a complete beginner, you may want to check out this ship model kit:

This model is designed for the first time modeler and you can get a version that includes all of the tools and supplies needed to complete the model.

My first was the Sultana.  The detailed practicum was invaluable...but this forum was priceless.  See my build log in the links below.  But remember to have fun!!!  Welcome!

Welcome Mark.

A 'simple' row boat such as Ryland suggested could be a great starting project. It will get you used to working with the materials and gently introduce you to the tools, glues, paints etc needed.

Also it won't take 12 months to complete and won't cost a fortune. And you still will get a tremendous amount of enjoyment out of it.

If you are wanting a bit more then Vanguard Models Lady Eleanor fishing vessel is a great kit that fits together perfectly.

I don't know what country you are based in but most of the stores and/or kit manufacturers seem to have little issue delivering in-country or abroad.

All the best,

Richard
