LOCKHEED P-38 H-5 LIGHTING, 1;48 Limited Edition by Tamiya, BobW

Bob,

Thanks, It is a local legend here.  Did he fly a P-38, or was it another plane.  When the bridge is down it is only  20ft or so above the water.  I have been over, and under it many times.  Even a sailboat with a modest rig must call for a lift.

Yep, Bong was a young fighter jock, pulled several stunts during his career, like looping the Golden Gate bridge with three other pilots on June 12th '42, buzzing market street in San Francisco at a reported height of 50 ft, and a civilian complaint of flying so low over a neighborhood that his prop wash blew a lady's laundry off her clothesline.... He was grounded for those incidents and several others when his unit shipped out to Europe..... (got a royal chewing from none other than Gen Kenney himself for it)

He was eventually assigned to a unit going to Australia and the SWPA..... soon flying out of Port Moresby, they didn't have any Lightnings at that point, (early in the SWPA P-38's were very scarce) so he was assigned temporarily to another unit flying P-40's so he could get some combat experience... This is when he got his first two victories, a Zeke and an Oscar I believe, he was awarded the Silver Star for it.....

He was one heck of a pilot....

These are the turbo-superchargers,  painted with Alclad II Lacquer Steel and Jet Exhaust.  Mixed at three to one.

The same parts with a weathering of AK Acrylic Rust Effect colors.  I know it looks rough,  but after drying for a day,  some work with a stiff brush they will look much better.

Here they are being test fit.  Bare Metal Foil has been added to the leading edges of the wings.  The area covered were the inter coolers for the turbo super-chargers.  The internal structure was corrugated with the liquid coolant flowing through.  All the early P-38's had this system.  It caused many maintenance problems with constant leaks and was easily damaged.  This system was converted to fuel storage  starting with the 'J' model.  The inter-coolers were moved to the bottom of the engine nacelles between the oil coolers giving the deep chin look.  I think they spoiled the profile of a very sleek airplane.

Thanks Lou,  and Thanks for the 'LIKES'.

Popeye,  Yes, it will be painted.  The wing roots were a heavy wear area.  Not much chipping but the ground crew would be fueling, filling oil tank,  and

working on the engines.  The plan is to paint with yellow zinc primer followed by RAF dark green.  This will be weathered and then very gently sanded to

show wear rather then chipping.  The leading edges of the wings in photos show streaking wear and some chipping.  The remainder around the engine

access panels will be treated with chipping fluid on the edges and fasteners.

Well,  It's been awhile since the last update.  The holidays were very busy.  And my buddy Max,  a Min Pin,  Pasted after 14 and a half years from congested heart failure.

This is a small update, been busy with with doctors.  Our annual check ups all are due for both of us in the New Year.

Here is a shot of the gear  legs.  They are brass for Eduard.  Soaked in a vinegar bath, then primed with Alclad II black gloss.  This was followed with polished aluminum on the recoil leg and dualminum on the strut leg.

These are the wheel and tire combos, made of resin from Eduard.  Sprayed with AK rubber black and then brushed with AK airfield dust.

This overall shot shows a coat of Alclad II airframe aluminum and a top coat of clear gloss.  This will be a base for chipping.

Hi Bob: I'm also sorry about Max. Our pets are family, and I know how hard it is for you.

Your P-38 is looking great. I really like that your using Alcad as the base for weathering and using the foil at the wing base is especially interesting. I had not heard of either of those technique before. It also seems like a good way to practice with Alcad before doing a natural metal finish airplane.

Thank You Dave for Your kind thoughts.  Everyone thanks for the 'LIKES".

The Bare metal foil is for wing roots where there was heavy wear from the ground crew walking.  The plan is to use a very fine sandpaper and carefully go down through the paint to show the metal.  Where the Alclad II is coated,  a chipping fluid will be applied and a toothpick used to 'chip' the bolt heads and panel lines.

You do some Nice work Bob and I really like the Idea on the antenna attachment stored/filed.My eyes are starting to have a problem even in 1/32 up close hence the reason 1/48 are relegated to OOB anymore.Looking forward to the foil and paint think I have the an idea of what's going on sure the evolution will provide the details.:imNotWorthy: Kevin

It's been quite a long time since the lat update.  I have worked on "Pudgy III" whenever I could grab an hour or two.  Life has just been getting in the way.

Here is a shot of the lay out for painting the tail markings.  Tommy McGuire was Squadron Exec at this time period.  These markings were in red with white border.  They consisted of red with white border top and bottom of the rudders and the bands on the booms.  The zinc chromate yellow was my attempt to show paint worn off down to the primer.  This was a failure,  the top coat bonded to the primer,  and I was reluctant to use solvent.
