Hello Everybody

It has been a long time since i have posted a update on my built :)

This has a reason. I have been very busy with some things, and I have done some things with my family because of the holiday (we went to a move). That's why I hadn't time to work on my ship ;)

Today I will again begin with the built, but I have to mention, that I will not built very much, because I have planned with my work to work more in this holiday to earn some money :D

I hope i can post tomorrow a new update :D  :D

Cheers,

Nick

Update

Hello everybody :D

It has been a long time since I have posted a update/day. But here is finally day 7

I have finally finished putting the blocks between the bulkheads, and I also started on making the back of the ship (which includes the captains cabin) :D:

IMG_1474.jpg

IMG_1478.jpg

IMG_1492.jpg

I did not finish the back completely, but I had to put the last block in, and after that i had to sand the blocks a little but down. I also need to modify the captain's first.

After putting the last block in, I had to sand the blocks a bit down for the lower deck. I thought that this was an easy job, but it wasn't. So I went to my uncle again, who had a power file, a sanding machine with a small width, so i could easaly sand the blocks down  :D :

IMG_1531.jpg

IMG_1532.jpg

IMG_1535.jpg

IMG_1540.jpg

IMG_1542.jpg

Everything is yet rough, but i have to sand it all nice and smooth. But for that i need first to finish the captain's cabin, and the blocks on the front of the ship  :D

I hope I can post soon again a day  :)

Good job.

I'll be following along, I have the same kit that I am going to kick-off soon; a gift for my (French) Father-in-law. I'll commence laying the keel and bulkheads once my Bounty build reaches the rigging stage. That way when all that spaghetti starts driving me crazy, I can go work some wood in the garage.

Completed Builds: AL Bounty Jolly Boat, Constructo Enterprise (logs lost in the great crash)

Current Builds: Constructo Bounty, AL King of the Mississippi

Update

Hello everybody

Here is again a day of my built of the Hermione la Fayette :D

I have to say, it was a short day (I had not much time). So i haven;t done very much, but yet i want to show you ;)

First I have some pictures of how the boat is currently staying on shelf. I sanded it a little bit (but i have to sand it more) after I went to my uncle:

IMG_1545.jpg

As you can see, i also need to sand the front of the ship :P

But it was rainy and i couln't sand outside. And because I didn't want all that mess inside, i decided to work on the metal parts I want to replace for wood.

I begun and ended with the grid. I also need to finisch the eatings bell, but for that I needed my dremel tool, and I hadn't had that at that time ^_^

Also i haven't finished the grid yet, but the result so far is as shown below:

IMG_1588.jpg

IMG_1589.jpg

And that's it  :P

Not a long day  ;)

Also I wanna thank you all for your comments, compliments, and support in my built. I love to see that you like my built. I hope I can soon begin with the planking, so it will get a bit more fun  :D

Also I love to hear that some of you are going (or are) to built this ship to. I haven't found any other topics of this ship, and I hope mine can help you all with your builts  ^_^

Hello everybody,

It has been a long while ago since I have posted a new Update or Day :) . The reason for that is that my school has started again :(  ^_^ . I have been (and am) very busy, and can't built :(  :( . So I have put the boat on the shelve in the building slip, and have stored my tools. I hope that I can built some little things in the coming winter, and I hope I can find some stuff for my captain's cabin (I'm looking for Led Lights to put in the cabin :D ). Ofcouce I let you know when I have made some progress.

Also, day 9 of the built has already past, but because the day after my school started, I couldn't post day 9. I hope i can post it soon :)

I'm very sad that i can't built for a while, but school is important to for my future.

I hope, coming spring I can begin again begin with the big building :D

Cheers

Update

Hello everyody :piratebo5:

It has been a while since my last comment/update. I already explained why. I said also that I would post day 9 soon. Unfortunaly, i was so busy that I had not got the time to post a new update. Today I wasn't that much busy with my homework, so i had time to sort out the foto's and post this day.

It has been a while since this day has past, but i could remember what I have done ;)

But first, I'm going to give you a short update of in with state of the built I am at the moment.

As you know I started with the small parts of the ship. This because here in the Netherlands the autumn has began, so it rains a lot :(

Day 9 was the last (sunny) day I worked outside. This was also the last day I worked on the frame of the ship (the bulkheads etc.).

I have done some little more sanding, and the state of the ship at the end is the state it wil be for a long while.

My workplace of day 9 ^_^ :

IMG_1601.jpg

And how the ship looked at the begin ;) :

IMG_1602.jpg

A new electric sawmachine from my father I used:

IMG_1613.jpg

I started with sanding the other balso wood block, wich i hadn't finisched yet ;)

IMG_1606.jpg

Then I started to saw new blocks to put for the other blocks (in the front):

IMG_1615.jpg

The difficult part was now to glue it together. It needed much patient and time for me, but finally i got them in the right place  :D   :D :

IMG_1617.jpg

And i started to sand them when they were dry:

IMG_1628.jpg

IMG_1642.jpg

Ans thats it.

I hope i can soon post the next day  :D   :D

By the way, the graver you saw on the photo's (or how it's called) is from my uncle. I borrow it from him, with wich I'm very happy  :D

Hello Everyone,

It has again been a short while since I have posted a post or update.

The built is in a sort of pause state. This because of a recently event (A short built of the HMS Victory by Revell), and because I'm busy with school.

But in the time I'm not very busy I do sometimes some research about the ship, and I have some questions for you wich i hope you can help me.

My first question is:

I want to light up the ships with LED light (I may make some old lamps and put them in there), but are these good for this scale:

5mm_felle_warm_witte_70_30graden_led_30g

They are 3mm wide.

My second question is:

I have yet decides to paint the boat with it's original colours :D . Because I'm the state of the built I can yet do this. The colours will be as below:

accorage1__004239400_1206_24022012.jpg

Hermione_ext.jpg

My question is: which sort of paint must/do I use? I don't know anything about that, only that they have to be matt.

I hope you can help me with these 2 questions.

Cheers

Nick

Hello Nick,

I'm sure other members will come up with answers for you as well.

But in the meantime you might have a look in the main articles/downloads section.

You will find some articles about lights there. http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-furniture-and-deck-fittings.php

Admiralty paint is of a very good quality. In the Netherlands you can buy it at Historische Modelbouw: http://www.historische-modelbouw.nl/?a=view-folder&id=30 or at Modelbouw de Kombuis: http://www.modelbouwdekombuis.nl/Category-405942/Scheepsverf-(17).html.

You might also have a look at the subforum 'Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques'

http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/forum/21-painting-finishing-and-weathering-products-and-techniques/

Thanks Anja for the advice. It helps me a lot, because most of my modeling tools and etc. I buy in Modelbouw de Kombuis. I had seen the paint you mentioned, but didn't know if it was good to use.

The articles you mention are very helpfull indeed. I already looked at them.

Hello everyone,

As I already said I needed some advice with the LED lights and paint.

Anja has given me very good advice, and I'm almost going to buy the paint she adviced me. But I came across Dubz his topic of the US Brig, and saw that he is using Humbrol coloar paint. The result was just fantastic. What do you think I need to do, buy the Humbrol or the Admirality paint? ;)

Then I have another question for you. I haven't got much experience with painting, and don't know what pencils to use. Which do you recommend, and do you have some tips for me with painting (especially the hull ^_^)

Than yet one thing about the LED light. I have found very small (3mm) LED light for a reasonable price. The subforum that Anja sent was very helpfull with that. So I have no problems with that anymore (I also know what to do with the wiring and battery ;) )

I hope you guys can help me, and already thanks for the help.

Then one more thinh to mention: I was looking back at my built log, and it seems quete OK but a bit long ^_^ . In the future I will post more days at one, so more progress can be seen. I also gonna post a few less photo's, because otherwise this built log wil be 100 page's long :D  ;)

Cheers

Some general painting tips (I'm sure there's quite a few in the forum that Anja linked as well):

- Use the biggest brush you can reasonably use for any given job. As long as the tip is in good condition, bigger brush means more paint/water in the brush, means more work done faster. I very, very rarely use anything smaller than a size 2 even for the tiniest of details.

- Get the cheapest brushes you can lay your hands on that still have a good, pointed tip until you're comfortable that you can maintain them properly (i.e at such a time when a brush hasn't yet gotten bristled after two weeks or so in heavy use). If it looks like a good quality brush, as opposed to something that already lost half of its bristles in the store, it probably is good enough. Anything north of 3€ is definitely overkill for most people.

- Stick with acrylic paint rather than enamels, especially when starting out. Much easier to maintain your brushes, less chemicals involved and it's way easier to dilute the paint.

- Thin layers - always thin layers. If it takes three layers for the paint to properly cover your surface, so be it - it's always preferable to do several thin layers rather than tacking on one thick layer. Some colors benefit from being built up in several layers - yellows, for instance, tend to look much better when built as layers ranging from Black / Red'ish brown / Golden orange / Golden yellow rather than Golden yellow / Golden yellow / Golden yellow. Your mileage may vary and it's definitely a matter of preference and what style you're after.

- Learn how to do careful drybrushing (plenty of youtube videos on this) on some spare pieces. Where you'd get some natural highlights on a full size ship, it just doesn't happen the same way on a model - some cheating is required.

Hello everyone,

Some little things around my built has taken place. One thing you will notice, is that the built log itself is shorter. I got some advice to make it a little bit shorter, with a few less photo's, so it remains interesting and doesn't become boring.

I also bought some things that I have not yet recieved but will receive in a few days. You will see what it is when I got it ;)

At last, I have to mention that I do not go on with the plan to place LED lights. I have not much experience with it, and the painting itself is already a big exercise for me.

I hope I can soon do some little stuf on the ship.

Hello everyone,

Here is a small update to my built of the Hermione la Fayette

Update

First, the update.

As I already said before, I have bought some paint and other stuff.

I eventually decided to buy admiralty paint.(with the advice of Sjors and Anja, who has come by at my house :D):

IMG_2259.jpg

Green and white have yet to come.

I also bought some really good (but expensive) brushes (pencils):

IMG_2100.jpg

With the advice on this forum I decided to buy Metalic black spray from Tamaya. This because the blackening on the amati cannons didn't work:

IMG_2263.jpg

At last, I also bought a new set of files (don't know the englisch word), a set of drills:

IMG_2101.jpg

IMG_2086.jpg

And now day 11. It was a short day because I had not much time. But I was in a need to buit something, because I hadn´t built for a while (and will not be, until the spring break :D  :D ). I decided to do some litte work on the crow's nest, I started last time. I work not very fast, and do everything precicely, so my apologize for the few progress I make. I hope to go faster when the may holiday and summer holiday begin, with good weather outside ;) :

IMG_2115.jpg

IMG_2119.jpg

IMG_2123.jpg

I also began making the plank helpers wich will be usefull when I will be planking the hull:

IMG_2097.jpg

I hope the time will go fast, and that it will be fast spring break :D

Cheers

Hello everyone,

I have a short question for you about the painting (I also asked this on my other topic ''painting and blackening'':

You all give me great tips about painting. Some people mentioned something called dry brush. But what is dry brush exactly and how to I dry brush?

All tips and tutorials about drybrushing are very welcome :D

I recommend finding a good matt finish spray to apply after the paint job, it will help flatten the colours and ensure that the reflective properties are uniform.  But firstly TEST IT!!! Sometimes if use in wrong situation or with wrong technique or atmosphere conditions it can cause flaking.

Hi Nick,

Dry brushing is a technique where you remove virtually all the paint from a brush before applying. Basically, lightly dip the brush in paint and then dab it off on a piece of paper towel until the brush leaves just the barest hint of paint. This trick is useful for highlighting details, such as bolt heads or other small protruding objects, in a contrasting colour.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the fast respons

@Demonborger, thanks for the tip. I think I have already found a good matt finish spray, but recommendations about which brand is good are always welcome.

@Realworkingsailor, thanks for the explanation. Afterwards, I thought that I could also know it by myself, because of the name DRY BRUSH :DBut now I know also how to do it.

Short update:

Did some more editing on the topic, because I found it still to lonh and too much photo's.

In less than 2 weeks I have holiday. I hope it will remain this weather (here in Holland, where it's sunny (and so not raining), but cold), so I can do a little bit outside and maybe finish the structure of the ship before planking.
