Hermione La Fayette by TheDutchShipBuilder - Artesania Latina - second wooden ship built

Recommended Posts

Sjors, I have looked at the cannons, and I think there is no need for a primer. The paint does sit really well on the cannon's. I don't know much about this, but I thought I would mention it.

Update
Hello everyone,
It's been a few weeks since my last update.
I will clarify where I are right now in the building progress.

I have been doing some experimenting with the gun cariages. I also have made some of the metal parts into wood (see photo's above).
I have made a lot of cariages, but still don't know if I've got the right size and shape. This because I have to made them by myself without any instructions.

The ship itself is sitting on a shelf in my room. I have now holiday, but will mostly doing the little work as the cannon's and other metal parts. After this two weeks holiday I have 8 weeks of school, and then begins the great holiday. In this holiday I will be doing a lot of moddeling, and hope to come far with the ship.

Here are some photo's of the new cariages (commentary is very welcome):

IMG_0406.jpg

I have made 3 different cariages. I found the second one the best and others I know told me also that the second one is better:

IMG_0206.jpg

So I will be using that one for making the rest of the cannon's in the coming 2 weeks in which I have holiday.

I will keep you all up to date of how far I'm (which is not very interesting to post a photo of every cannon I make  ;)  :P ). After the holiday I will focus on my study, but after 8 weeks I will do a lot of moddeling, including the planking (finally :D  :D )

Hi Guys,

Good question about those wheels. I'm planning to make them red indeed.

@Sjors, do you know if Admiralty paint can be used on metal parts?

I also have to make wooden wheels because I haven't enough brass wheels. When the Admiralty paint won't work on brass I will make them all wood (maybe I will do it anyway).

Update

Hello everyone,

here is another update on the built.

I have first done some work on making the captains cabin. I had to lower the deck first, with a handy tool of my uncle.

Then I did smooth the blocks (which will be under the lower deck) with some wood filler. After this I have made the lower dek out of a wooden plate I bought. This was very difficult because I had to make it completely from scratch.

I think the result is good (but next time I will do it more precisely). Some holes I have filled with wood filler (the white stuff  ;) ):

The next thing that must be done is painting and planking of the deck. I also have to take a look at the captains cabin, which need some more modification.

Update

Hello everyone,

Here is another update.

I have made a construction at the back of the ship, where the captain's cabin will be. Because I did some modification to make the captain's cabin, I had to remove some of the construction. I had to make my own construction, because the planking can't be done without it.

Here is the result:

Hey, I was wondering if someone could help me. I received Hermione couple years ago, but when I opened the box I realized there is no instruction book. I don't know how it's possible but it's missing :( Could anybody help me? Maybe someone could do a scan or have this instruction in pdf and would like to send me or place it on this forum? I would be very thankful.

I don't know the rights Artesania claimed on these document, but I can scan them for you and send you them in pfd form. I am busy at the moment, so I will do it in a few days.

(I need to be sure that it is not illigal: anyone know if it is or not??)

Hey, Copying isn't illegal.I don't want to sell it or something, I just need it for my own use. I would be very thankful, really, My Hermiona is waiting because  there is no possibility to make it without instruction. There is too much details. If you could help me that is my mail: E-mail address removed by moderator to prevent spamming.

Update

Hello everyone,

It's been a month since my last update, but here is another one (or two)

I have removed the construction I had made. Not permerantly but because I have to do the deck planking. I have alse removed the beams wich holds the upper deck temporary.

I have begin with planking the deck  :D  :D  The planks are from lime wood, and are 4mm wide and 9cm long. The black lines (don't know what they are called in english) are made with black admiralty paint. Any paint stains have yet to be removed and the whole deck has to be sanded.

Here is the result:

Your planking looks good. I've always liked the black colouring on the plank sides. The end result will be very nice. :)

Looking good Nick!

Are you aware that the real l'hermione is being built in Rochefort as we speak? The ship is almost finished, the last cannons are being fitted and she will be ready for sea trials. They plan to sail to boston in 2015 :D

Maybe you can use these sites as reference material for your build?

Yes, I'm aware of that. I use the ship in Rochefort as example for my ship. I'm going to paint my ship exactly the same

Update

Hello everyone,

First of all, you may notice that there are no more days but only updates. I do this because I lost the count on the days ;)

But here is another update. I did some work on the cannon's. A have bought a new Tamaya Gun Metal Black spray, because the Metal Black was a bit to dark. I have also made my first (real) cannon (which is not a experiment anymore but how the others will also look). I use this cannon as a example when making the other cannon's:

Image00044.jpg

Image00042.jpg

Image00052.jpg

Image00040.jpg

Image00071.jpg

I have chosen to make both wheels exactly the same size because I found out that the cannon's on the ship in Rochefort has also same sized wheels. And I try to remake that ship after all.

Nick

Probably you've seen this, but this is a great image to show how Hermione's deck planking goes. I once calculated there is 11 rows of planks between the cuts (if i remember correct). I've also done a deck planking plan for Hermione if you want to see it. Just if you want to do the decks like in the real ship. ;)

I would like to see it. But I don't know if I will use it. I'm very pleased with my deck so far. There are some things that can be done better next time, but I'm a beginner and can learn from mistakes.

Also as you can see on my pictures in compared to your picture, that my deck is a lot lighter than the one on the real ship. It will become darker when I oil it, but it will not be as dark as the real one.

I'm thinking of a way of making the nails on the dek, but don't know how yet (so advice is welcome)

Here's the deck planking plan i've made based on photos, so this could be pretty close to the real. What i don't know is the lenght of the planks.
