Biloxi schooner by Russ - 1/48 scale POB - Finished

Recommended Posts

Here is a small update.

I have completed the shell of the deck house. It has planked sides and roof with false openings for windows on the sides and an opening for the door and sliding hatch on the aft side. There is still some fitting to do around the bottom edges of the house.

Feel free to comment and ask questions.

Very nice.  Will the deck house be painted or will it match the decking?

Sam:

Thanks. Yes, the recesses will be windows. The deck house window unit usually had two panels that slide back and forth in the window frame. What I will do is to place a panel in the recess about half the length of the window opening to represent one panel. The solid wall panel will then represent the second sliding panel. A window will be placed around the opening and the entire thing painted. That should give the illusion of a fully functional window unit.

Michael:

Thanks for looking in.

Another small update.

Here is the window framing and fake panel. Still needs some clean up, but once it is painted, it should be presentable.

Here is another small update. I do not seem to do any other kind. :)

The starboard deck house window is fitted. This one went a little easier being the second try at it.

I have also begun fitting the hatch rails and the door.

Comments and questions welcomed. :)

Pete:

Thanks for checking in.

Popeye:

Thanks for the kind words. The deck house and all of the deck furniture will get painted.

Bob:

Thanks. I considered making the window panels slide, but at this scale, I did not think I could get it to look right. So, they look real enough, but they do not work.

Thanks for all the likes.

Russ....After a two year layoff, struggling to re-gain the "feel" I had once worked my way up to with several scratch builds. So I am taking the day out of the shop to plow through some really great build logs, like yours, in hopes of re-hauning my techniques.

As always, your work is inspiring and very informative.

Thanks

And another small step forward.

The hatch has been fitted. You can also see the alignment runners on its underside. These align the hatch cover on the rails.

David:

Thanks for the kind words. The deck house assembly still needs some sanding and filling in some places.

The deck house will get a white paint job. I might go gray with the deck house roof and hatch cover. That was a common theme on these boats.

Another small update. I have decided on how to handle the deadeyes and chainplates. I am not yet happy with the results, but I will try to improve on them as I go along. In my defense, I can only say that the deadeyes are 1/16" diameter and the chainplates are .005" thick. It is all very SMALL. :)

The cap for the assembly is only held in place with a strip of bamboo right now.

All of what you see will get painted white.

One deadeye still needs to be rotated a bit counter clockwise, but I will take care of that in due course.

Russ,

I like the cabin, the entryway, and those windows. Very nice and well scaled to the hull.

Those dead eyes look good and oh boy they are tiny. My Arethusa dead eyes were 0.15 inches in diameter and I thought I had difficulties. Your's are so so small at 0.06 in diameter. Very nice work.

Thanks for those very kind words. It is appreciated. I am going to have another look at the deadeyes and chainplates later this evening and see what I think.
