Beef Wellington Posted June 9, 2021 Share #31 Posted June 9, 2021 Hi ECK, I always hate to make observations on other peoples work (but always hope people help identify my mistakes!) so forgive me, but the wale looks to be too wide. Hard to tell from the angles of the photo's, the top seems to sit abut right but the bottom extends lower than I would have expected which may result in the top of your coppering being too far down the hull so may be worth double checking. ECK Posted June 9, 2021 Author Share #32 Posted June 9, 2021 I checked the instructions, so 0.5 by 3 mm strake starting below top 1 by 5 mm second plank then 6 1x3mm after it for total of 21 mm or 7 planks. The strake by the picture may make it look wider from the angle and hard to distinguish it so not sure to leave as per instructions or remove lower most plank. With the seven strakes and dimensions you give, the width is about 26mm, or 65 inches full scale. Diana 1794 would have likely had no more than four strakes of anchor stock or top and butt planking as straight strakes of wale planking were not used after about 1720. Compare with the main wales on a third rate which had a total width of 50 to 51 inches full scale and the main wales on a 98 was 56". You can see what they look like on photos of contemporary models of Diana at NMM. Couple pics are below. I would go with the models at NMM as being more accurate than the kit instructions. For a 38 gun 5th rate scantlings in both the Shipbuilder's Repository 1788 and Steel's Elements of Naval Architecture show that there were four strakes of planking for the main wales with a total width of 45 inches and a thickness of 6". There were seven diminishing strakes of thickstuff below the wales and two above. Those touching the wales were 5" thick. ECK Posted June 9, 2021 Author Share #35 Posted June 9, 2021 (edited) So here is the new look. It looks appropriate although if you look at the model on the box it does have the 1+6 strakes. The above picture has 4 of the 1x3 mm strakes and is less curved than the model plan so will stick with the real thing as outlined by our gracious expert. Pardon the copper paint but I was prepping the back ground before I had to make the adjustments so will remark out the copper lines later. It looks to me that you used the 5mm strakes rather than the 3mm. I did mine with 6 and they didnt turn out that wide. But when u reduced it to 4 i think it ok. I have found the pictures on the box and plans do not always correlate well and some things do not fit quite right depending on where you look so I have made a few adaptions to get things to line up especially with the side galleries/ Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

After taking a vacation time, have finally finished the hull of HMS Diana, sans the hammock cranes and boomkins. These I will do at the end as I am always breaking them when I am doing the rigging.
