I ran into something like that on the Mizzen mast of my Rattlesnake, and it ended up that I had set the rake of the mast a bit too much aft. That doesn't offer a solution, but I have to think that someone with more experience will have something for you. I agree about the rigging too. With my Badger, someone told me after building the hull that I was 2/3 of the way done. I almost felt like the rigging was equal to, or more than, the hull work -- though I did add sails to my build. I know from the tallships I built before, from the geometrical design of the Yard-racks that the racks together with the Yards describe a halfcircle around the mast and so they do`nt interfere with the shrouds and backstays, and do`nt foul with the shrouds The lower Pegasus Yards have no racks (only the adjustable truss pedant tackle), so probably the more the Yards are braced, the more ease is given to the truss pedants, regardless to the move away from the mast. Please give me a hint, if someone knows better.... flyer Posted October 2, 2014 Share #682 Posted October 2, 2014 Hi Nils Are you oversaturated with compliments yet? No? OK, truly great work and your details are getting neater and neater! I found your question about bracing the yards quite intriguing. The missing space to brace the yards did in fact disturb me a bit but I just put it down to mistakes in my builds and ignored the fact that the kits must represent the true conditions considering their quality. Browsing through John Harland’s Seamanship in the age of sails I find that for example the sequence of orders to wear a ship included: Let go lee truss-tackle fall! and Weather truss tackle fall! In seems your assumption is correct and the yard was allowed to move away from the mast. This however looks strange to me as it then would rest against the foremost shroud on the lee side, putting some strain onto and chafing it. But perhaps the whole rigging was much more dynamic and put to stress and wear as I can imagine when meticulously setting up one rigid rope or line after the other. Very good question! Perhaps some other member knows more and where are the administrators anyway? There was an answer from Mark, mentioning a loostening of the leeward formost shroud by means of a block tackle in the shroudline, an just this tackle can be seen, wonderful done, in one of Doris`s recent pics on the Royal Caroline rigging on all three masts. Its too late now for me to do it this way, but l`ll adjust the truss tackles accordingly nevermind to the gap Mast / Yard. That book you are Holding of John Harland seems to be quite informative for looking up answers to questions.... as there are hardly 18th century model squareriggers with braced sails shown, this Detail does not Show up accordingly, wether in plans, nor in modeling Performance. perhaps Chris Watton may put a remark on the Amati Plan, which in all I find quite good. I have even missed it in Lennarth Peterssons book "Rigging Period Ship Models" for bracing Details. I often look into your rigging, when I ask myself, how did he do it?
