Old Collingwood Posted June 10, 2021 Share #1 Posted June 10, 2021 Well I have given in to temptation and brought this little bad boy, I will build her (when / after I have finished my Waterloo Dio) in her Battle of the Denmark Straits set up, that as we know during her battle with Bismark led to her catastrophic loss when her magazine blew up. The last time I built a model of Hood was the old 1/600 Airfix kit back in the 70's so I am full of excitement to build this one. These are the screen shots from the Flyhawks advert. You know Lou - I'm not sure, the moulds are seperate - Waterline upper/Bootline section/Lower Hull so it leaves it wide open to build as a full ship on a stand or a waterline, I will be Rattle Can painting it as I think brush painting will not bring out the delicate details, so I will be able to spray those sections seperate without having to mask along the hull. The part about the below waterline being painted anti fouling gray instead of a reddish color is something new to me. I wonder how many other British ships were also painted with this gray color? You know Lou - I'm not sure, I was supprised to read that as I was under the Impression that Anti Fouling Red was a standard lower hull application throug out the Royal Navy and Red of different shades being normal with other navies - wonder what the logic/thinking behind Grey was? The only confirmed colour is Peacocks & Buchan's antifouling grey in 1920 and 1925. For the remainder of the time period, no colour was specified. Additional details follow below. 1920-1936: As commissioned, Hood's bottom, to include the propeller shafts and rudder was anti-fouling grey (per ADM 136/13). Painting details are scarce, but she is also known to have had grey bottom paint in 1925. Based on the manufacturer used, we assume she remained grey, but we cannot rule out the possibility that Hood may have also had a black bottom during some periods. We are fairly confident that she was not red below her waterline. Wartime/As Sunk: We have no confirmed colour information. We assume Hood was still using anti-fouling grey based on her previous history and her wreck (the stern appears dark grey/faded black underneath and shows no sign of red). There is anecdotal evidence to suggest black was used, but its also possible that it was dark grey. Detailing Suggestion: Although she tended to have her bottom re-coated annually, the coating did get very worn over the course of the year. As a result, unless you are modelling Hood as "freshly painted" you might want to slightly lighten and/or weather the underside with a bit of grey. You can also add worn spots as well as chipping, barnacles and sea grasses if you so fancy.
