You may be able to get extensions of the exhaust hose to bring it to the closest window.

Where I  sit its against a back wall with no window the closest outlet to me about Two feet to my side is our back door thats kept open even in the winter,   I have been planning to make a cardboard box  as its the only real  route that works  for me, I am also running out of space as its a tiny house we live in  more like a shoe box.

My problem is - I am a  living room kit builder  I am about 15 feet away from the admiral who has breathing issues  from anything smelly, Even when I used to use  tamiya rattle cans out side she could smell them  - thats why I decided  to make all my painting Acrylic and never use any other  paint format, infact I  have a stash of Tamiya rattle cans  that need  binning.

Painting my figures has/is an Absolute delight as brushing on my acrylic paints  has Zero affect on either of us - I was hoping uisng an airbrush with the same paints would be the same - that is why I brought it.

Yeah, OC, you're still going to have the exhaust issue, whether the booth is handmade or pre-fab.  I would find out if there are non-exhaust hose solutions out there.

But the smell should be none existent  using  Vallejo acrylic paints  and with the  airbrush putting out such a fine mist surely it should be fine?  that's what I keep telling myself otherwise I have wasted a lot of money on something I can not use, this is coming form someone who used to paint with Enamels  in a living room environment, with all those vapours and fumes we were used to - and the  thinners.

I use a sheet of plywood that fits my window with a dryer hose attached to vent outside.   Hole in the plywood for the hose and mounting piece.   True it connects to my laser but when I my one plastic build, I did the small spray booth thing with a small cheap fan to suck the air from the box and blow it down the dryer hose to vent out side.   When I was done, the box I used for the spray booth hit the trash, the hose and window wood back to the laser and fan... well it's nice to have in work shop to move some air around.

Lots of ways to skin that cat, so to speak.  Just need to find the one that works for you.

I think mine will  be  - build the cardboard box best I can  make sure it can be lit by my light, make sure door is always open (as it always is  even If I am freezing)  possible wear a muzzle(I mean mask)  and gently spray the thing.

That will probably work best.  Acrylic really has no odor to speak up so you just want to keep the 'dust' from getting to the rest of the apartment/house.

May try putting an "old/used" nylon stocking over the exhaust duct to trap any particles. Several train buds do that, spraying acrylics.

Mine wont have any sort of exhaust duct  -  it will just be a  knocked up cardboard box with a turntable and  my light peering in over the top.

I think you will be fine. With 1/700 scale its not like you are hosing the place down with paint even with a big beast like the Hood. Small areas to paint and short paint sessions.

I seem to spend as much time cleaning the airbrush as painting with it 😄

Yep,  I have been watching some videos on spraying with acrylics and it shows the frequent cleaning of the airbrush  - good job I brought some Vallejo cleaner - came today,  I have been debating  for paint thinners  - distilled water or acrylic thinning agents?

I'm a novice at airbrushing so I'm happy to be contradicted here. I use Vallejo acrylic thinner and it seems to work well with the Tamiya and AK acrylics I use. It is low odour too. I learnt that keeping the nozzle nice and clean is a big contribution to a decent paint session. I think you can use window cleaner or Chlorox cleaner too instead of the proprietary stuff. I haven't got brave enough to try that yet.

I'm getting results that I am happy with, certainly much better than the brush but I still have a lot of learning to do.

I have often used window cleaner to do the initial cleaning of my airbrush when using acrylics. You may have an issue with the slight ammonia odor though. I then follow it up with water, sometimes hot, (Out of the faucet, not stove hot) and sometimes cold depending on how lazy I'm feeling. I have very seldom had to use much thinner or cleaning solvent. I have only had to remove the tip to clean inside a couple of times so far but then I really have only used it in my Huey build. Not exactly the heavy use Craig and Greg get out of theirs.

There are a wealth of videos out there some, of course, better than others. I watched one in my early days which recommended that you dilute your stock paint in the bottles. I have read subsequently that will ruin the paint quickly. I have also seen it stated that Hoppes (gun oil) should be used as part of cleaning the airbrush. I think the experts here are the source of quality advice.

I use the thinner for the brand I'm using for thinning/conditioning the paint. Some paints curdle with generic thinners. Additional ingredients in the proprietary thinner?

Cleanup is a different matter.  The branded thinners aren't cheap, but you can use some homemade cleaning thinners. Here's one take on a homemade thinner for acrylics: https://www.cybermodeler.com/tips/thinner.shtml

My blogpost here

has a link to a model RR site with another brew for homemade thinners. It's in post #1

Thanks Ken,  I have purchased Two  bottles of Vallejo airbrush cleaner, and will try thinning  the acrylic paints using distilled water (will let some boild water go cold them put them in a few of my eye dropper empty bottles, that way I can gauge the mix by  drops.

So  guess what turned up yesterday  - it cost me a fair bit (for plastic modeling, it makes a gentle puring sound  and you can inflate tyres with it if you want to)   yep my airbrush kit has arrived:dancetl6:

Cam in a huge box  quite heavy and contained a bout a Million of those styrene bits for protection  - did they fall all over the floor when taking the boxes out  - "cause they did".

Its put away in my model cupboard till I get around to trying it out.

From my limited experience the thin even coats of paint that don't hide the details will impress you and really make your work look good. I need to learn to shade and free hand areas like the masters but even at my level of ability I get results I couldn't emulate any other way.

Sure, but you can prime all those little soldiers in one fell swoop. After you practice a bit with the airbrush, though. 😁
