Pz.Kpfw 1 Aust F Early by King Derelict - Flyhawk 1/72

Recommended Posts

I recently received the Flyhawk Pz.Kpfw 1 Aust F early version and plan to start it as a side project from Penelope.

The kit is up to the usual Flyhawk standard. The detail is very fine and the boz is packed with parts. Its very nicely packaged with cut foam sections to protect parts. The hull is embedded in one section rather than being on a sprue.

And you can see the glint of PE under the plastic. There are actually more sprues below the PE along with brass barrels

579567654_RIMG0051(720x1280).thumb.jpg.9692cbe4961fabfc1cdb8331f8c8ab46.jpg

The tracks are a mix of lengths and individual links and are very nicely made.

It looks a very nice model to build and a lot of detail and parts for the price. I'm looking forward to starting it

I made a start this afternoon after painting the Penelope. I assembled the basic hull parts and then worked the first PE; the heat shield for the exhaust. Nice PE to work with and  it all went together nicely.950719840_RIMG0060(1280x720).jpg.a2729d99962a77c7f253a28ba4d60ee1.jpg

16902337_RIMG0062(1280x720).jpg.aa9d346ed13a7050f7504b91b3beb39a.jpg

There are some nice suspension details to add to the hull sides which will be mostly hidden. The PE engine intakes were added and I made up the turret apart from the PE. There are some nice PE grab handles to add. And look at those neat spanners in the fret.

1811642847_RIMG0063(1280x720).jpg.e7f9be22e38432edfe494bb2d8738b1a.jpg

I plan to add the PE and then paint the hull and turret, painting the wheels and track separately. It looks like the early Aust F tanks came in any colour you liked as long as it was dark grey so that will be a bit of a rest after the Penelope camouflage scheme

This has been so much fun so far.  Everything is so nicely detailed and it all fits so well.

Nice start Alan

If you are interested. I have some info on this type of tank.
I think that only a few copies of this prototype were built and that these were later only used for training.
And, indeed, I haven't built this model (yet). A gap in my Panzer 1 collection 😉

Thanks Patrick

Some additional information on the Panzer 1 would be great. I have found photos of an Aust F in Belgrade and Russia and what I have read suggests that although the Panzer 1was widely used the Aust F was produced in limited quantities and was mainly a training vehicle. Thanks again.

Those popcorn waggons look more formidable than the Aust F 😄

Thanks

Another one from the VK 6.01 - 9.01 tree....

Didn't they do a Pz II with this type of suspension? I believe they did the "Luchs" they built 100 of them.... Some saw actual combat service if I remember correctly.....

Yep the VK 13.03....

I made a little progress today. I cut off the plastic gun barrels and added the brass ones. I deliberated over whether to bother; the original plastic looks quite reasonable but the brass is a little finer and does have a hollow muzzle.

138305486_RIMG0076(1280x720).jpg.bfd85133aa1643d3a3c3394144158b90.jpg

Then I moved onto adding the PE detail to the turret. There are some very fine grab handles and some equipment brackets which were easy to work with in spite of their size. The turret is now going to require delicate handling

452415655_RIMG0077(720x1280).thumb.jpg.505af5f70a925ed6d85428f199f4bbcc.jpg2091497841_RIMG0079(1280x720).jpg.c1c2539426ec0b867b1b2cf5b0c67c4c.jpg332638799_RIMG0081(1280x720).jpg.1a9a6244e27ab7a67ef5b28094bbd0c2.jpg

Next will be masking the axles and spraying primer onto the hull, turret, track and wheels.

Thanks for looking

Ginger beer sounds interesting.

Love the progress on the little tank. Amazing how much detail they pack into small scale models. This scale makes it so much more practical to display them.

Hi Craig

The ginger beer is the stuff out mums made back in the sixties but scaled up to an adult alcohol content. It's a very easy recipe (basically sugar, dried ginger and lemon juice plus yeast) and it is very refreshing at the end of a Florida summer day.

I like the 1/700 scale ships and 1/72 AFVs. it definitely helps with the display problem, I think it pushes my space crisis back about another fifteen models. I'm not sure I'll ever got to the 1/350 ship kits I've got especially if Flyhawk keep putting out interesting new offerings. Your resin upgrades show me that there are other elements to explore beyond PE.

  • 2 weeks later...

Back to making some progress here after being focussed on HMS Penelope. I painted the rubber rims of the road wheels and built up the overlapping wheels. I found the wheels to be very tight on the axles and had to open them up with the next size drill. The first section of track was glued into place and I found another slight issue. The drive wheel / sprocket inner and outer teeth do not align. The inner and outer halves of the wheel are assembled with a square key so there is no scope for mis-assembly there and it is present on both sides. Dry fitting the first few single track pieces suggest that there is enough slack on the holes in the track to accommodate the misalignment and still have some scope to make the track run straight and parallel with the wheels. Some cleaning up and installation of the remaining track sections and probably some light clamping to get the track to sag onto the wheels are needed. The track pieces are very nicely moulded and seem to go together well. I departed a little from the instructions to move the long lower section forward to engage the first teeth of the drive wheel in order to ensure the following single pieces would engage also.

The track guards and small details will go on and then weathering and another experiement with the Rust and Bare Metal Oilbrushers

Thanks

Alan

Nice work Alan.

If the sprocket teeth dont fit. I usually cheat 😇 and cut some of them off.
Mostly on older models with rubber tracks as on this Airfix Centurion sprockets (link to buildlog in signature)

The first section of track was glued into place and I found another slight issue. The drive wheel / sprocket inner and outer teeth do not align. The inner and outer halves of the wheel are assembled with a square key so there is no scope for mis-assembly there and it is present on both sides.

If the sprocket teeth don't fit. I usually cheat 😇 and cut some of them off.

I've cut off sprocket teeth as well, but I hit on an easier solution, I cut off the alignment tabs or square locators and align them with a pair of machinists angles so the blade is vertical... putting a sprocket tooth against the square blade on each side of the sprocket forces the correct alignment and using two on opposite sides forces the two halves to be concentric...

It's a bit more work, but eliminates sprocket alignment issues in all cases without cutting off teeth......

You guys do beautiful work.....
