king derelict Posted July 7, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 7, 2021 With the Penelope diorama on hold while the Sculptamold dries and the Kujawiak waiting for primer to dry I thought I would investigate the contents of the Flyhawk Renault FT17 box a little more closely. Somehow a few hours passed and progress is being made. The hull was straightforward to build up with everything fitting well. The detail is very crisp and impressive. Some nice PR parts complete the details. The track and drive wheel assembly had me reading the instructions and playing with the parts several times to ensure the assembly was correct. Its not obvious in the photo but the little chain drive in the top left is a folded PE part and is going to be invisible in the final assembly. The sprocket wheel and the front wheel are specific to the variant being built. The hull needs some more PE adding which will make it quite delicate. I may wait until painting of the major assemblies is complete and the tracks are added. I had the priviledge of doing individual track links with individual rollers on mine.... (RPM 1/35th scale) Nice crisp detail for a 1/72nd scale model.... Tempted, but I do like my 1/35th scale.... One of the drivers hatch handles disappeared while I was cutting it from the fret and I can't find it so a scratch one was made from 0.2 mm brass wire. I have sprayed grey primer onto the assemblies and will now wait twenty-four hours before starting the paint scheme. king derelict Posted July 15, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted July 15, 2021 I sprayed the white paint onto the hull as the start of the Spanish Moroccan paint scheme. I had just cleaned the air brush and the Post arrived with this The colour illustrations show the paint scheme for the Spanish Moroccan Rif Wars but it is described as grey and olive drab. That maybe makes more sense than white as i think I recall the Rif being limestone. So I sprayed a coat of light grey over the white and we will move forward with that. I sprayed a brown base onto the tracks which I am assuming are steel and take on a rust brown colour in service. The masking of the hull and turret will be next. Interesting! Alan, For the French/American WWI versions the colors in real life were bright and vivid, very colorful.... Patton commented on it in his reports when he received them.... The Flyhawk illustrations are close to spot on in presentation.... The others I'm not sure about as they don't hold the interest for me as the American tanks do.... One more thing, they were not allowed to stay dirty neither the French nor the American ones Renault gave specific instructions that keeping them clean would just about double their mechanical lifespan so they were kept washed and clean when not actually in battle.... I'll stay with the Flyhawk colours for the US and French variants. Its also good information about the condition of the tanks in the field. I'll keep weathering and dirt down to a realistic minimum. I studied the Rif War scheme a bit further and decided on the olive drab with the grey rather than brown. The Rif is limestone with dusty green vegetation so I think this ends up being a compatible camouflage. Many thanks again; you are an invaluable source of detailed information. I used the same method as I have on the small destroyers to get a starting point. I scaled the Flyhawk illustration up to the same size as the model and printed it along with a reverse image (I only have one side illustrated) The relevant parts were then glued to masking tape and cut out. That gave me some idea of the layout on the sides and then I filled in across the turret and upper hull. Some of it is simplified because it will be hidden by the tracks. It looks a bit untidy but it seemed functional Then the olive drab And the big moment; pulling the masks off. It came out quite well and captures the intent of the paint scheme even though it might be a bit out on the details The tracks can now be fitted to the running gear and these assemblies will go onto the hull. Some detailed painting and restrained weathering and I think that is all it needs. Fun little build. I fitted teh running gear into the tracks and added the assemblies to the hull which completes the build. I touched up paint; added detail painting and a light wash to bring up some of the panels and track details. I added a small amount of rust on the lower part of the hull and the trail. I didn't want to really overdo the weathering. I'll look at it again tomorrow but I'm inclined to add the decals and leave it as shown here. Yes in constant usage the tracks would basically be bare steel on the contact surfaces, but this wasn't a tank in constant usage, it had long periods of sitting out in the semi humid spanish countryside environment... in essence everything not painted would have surface rust over it in a very short time, so I little shiny where the rust was knocked off would fit it perfectly... A little rust around the lower parts would also fit as I'm sure they didn't exactly receive the maintenance they would have when in the French army... I was going to try Blutack but whenever I use it I seem to get little bits sticking to the subject when I remove it.
