HM Brig Badger by shark bait - Caldercraft - scale 1:64

Recommended Posts

This is my second build. I chose the Badger with the help of my friend Clare Hess and I'm glad I did. I've read all I could find about this ship and ones that are similar. I'm looking forward to the work ahead. I had fun laying the keel and associated bulkheads. I added some mast supports to the side of the keel and the mast slots. That idea came from Ben Lankford's book. The plans called for planking the false deck later, but I thought I could do a better job of it now.post-936-0-64079800-1374630712.jpgpost-936-0-56143100-1374630825.jpgpost-936-0-87789900-1374630898.jpgpost-936-0-32155300-1374630951.jpgpost-936-0-02576300-1374631023.jpgpost-936-0-11141300-1374631085.jpg

The # one bulkhead (by the stem) had a measurement of 28 mm on the portside and 26 mm on the starboard side. I found the problem when using a batten to determine how much to bevel. I don't know how it happened, but it is what it is. I used 1X4 mm stock left over from my first build to add material. It was flexible enough to match the contour of the bulkhead. I used two layers of material. So far, so good.

Hi Bill,

Yeah, I measure and re-measure and still those alignment issues sometimes slip by me. Looks like you've got it under control.

I've never seen a bow filler block like that – It looks like it extends up above the deck. Is it notched so that you can remove the upper portion later?

Clare, The plans call for not only removing the top of the filler block, but all of the bulkhead tops after the "gunport pattern" has been installed. On one build log, however, it looks like the tops were left on and painted.

I spent the last few evenings just happily sanding the different bevels and stern area from the bearding line to the stern post. I thought I was ready to start planking, but I was wrong. I set a batten along the side topost-936-0-19825200-1375555663.jpgpost-936-0-67607800-1375555702.jpgpost-936-0-63229600-1375555757.jpgpost-936-0-82619100-1375555784.jpgpost-936-0-95769600-1375555855.jpg check everything out (previous battens were at the bow and stern)and found two bulkheads were too short. I had to add more material. Rather than using several 1X4 mm pieces, I shaped a 2X4 piece. I just needed a 1X4 piece on the port side. Now some more sanding!

Smart stuff Bill - you are on the right track. Fairing is as much about adding as it is about subtracting. Annoying as it is to add, I found that for my AVS build this was critical. It is about thinking through the whole thing and never assuming the kit maker got it entirely right. Good foundations on your part!

Hi Bill, welcome to the Badger club.  :D  The kit does make for a nice model.  There are a few of us here that are working on or have completed the Badger.

I'm just about to the running rigging on mine, but my wife recently had twins, so I am a bit waylaid at the moment.  If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Thank you for the support Alistair and Mike. I just got back from a short vacation and am ready to get back to the fun stuff. I have looked at your log of the Badger Mike and think you have done some mighty fine work there. Congratulations on the twins!

Well, I've got a little bit more done on the first planking. I'm disappointed in the outcome so far as it looks like I have a ton of work to do to dress this up for the second planking.

Don't worry about the first planking. After the first filling and sanding the hull looks much better. But I agree, it's indeed a ton of work. ;)

Cheers, Richard.

Hi Richard,

I know I can make it look decent and also prepare it for the second planking with sanding and filler ( I thought of using Spackle ). It's just that I thought my second attempt at this would go better than the first. Silly me, the kit is different, but I'm still the same.

Hi Bill

You are getting there and fill and sandpaper will help. Not sure how you aren't those planks tight to each other. Maybe more dry fitting first? All your pictures suggest the right methods. But don't worry, there are lots of weapons at your disposal - fill and sand being the best of them. Also remember to bevel the plank edge to the plank above - this helps keep it much tighter. Further I'd suggest that your hull framing is probably pretty strong - do not be afraid to apply pressure to get the planking tight. Another recommendation is come down from above as well as up from below. I think the plank that is most troublesome is the one in your picture: first first planking 001.JPG. It is creating a lens shaped planking area between the bow and stern and this is always going to cause trouble. You now have a lot of planking space at the stern to fill and very little at the bow - this will hurt. I'd plank it however you can now - just get past it, fill and sand and then look at the planking tutorials here for the second round of planking. Plan the second planking with care and you'll be away and sailing.

I hope this encourages, it is meant to - wood ship modelling has many ways of digging holes but equally as many ways of getting out of them. You'll be fine.

Cheers

Alistair

Thanks, Alistair,

I know I created a lot of work for myself. We are having a heat wave this weekend which will render yard work ill-advised, so I will have time to try and make this thing right. I will not proceed until I have corrected the problem and I can press on with pride.
