HMS Montrose by King Derelict - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/700 - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

UPS brought a package from TAP Plastics. Several pieces of cut to order acrylic sheet to make a display case for Montrose and another case for general waterline models. As always great service and fast turn round. It worked out abouyt $30 for the Montrose case and $55 for the larger one.

I put together the Montrose case

And it fits the base!

I built up the other case which will be empty for a while. I'm not sure its the most intelligent way to display the models but I can't find a spot for a dedicated cabinet so these cases stack and hold a reasonable number as long as I don't develop pretensions to 1/350 or 1/35 armour

I added the wheels and decals to the Lynx. The safety netting was finished on the ship and decals were added after some touch up painting - although I now see I need to go round again.

I now need to get serious with the sea base. The corvette is not going to intrude for a while. My FedEx package with the paints needed for the hull is wandering aimlessly around North Carolina at present with the FedEx website stating "Delivery Pending" as the status.

Thanks for looking in

Alan

I returned to the base and added several layers of toilet paper soaked in diluted white glue. I pushed the resulting pulp around to form some waves with a bit of direction and a start of a bow wave and wake. This was allowed to dry overnight,

This morning I started to add the basic colours. I used craft acrylics in light blue, peacock blue, navy blue and black. I put lines of teh light blue on the high points of the base and then laid the darker colours as stripes in between. With a wet brush I merged the colours together and stippled the light blue to reduce its presence. I'll let this dry before dry brushing white onto the wave caps, the wake and adding to the bow waves. Its a bit more boisterous than I originally planned but I quite like how its developing so I'll stick with it. The trick will be in deciding when enough is enough!

I reduced some of the light blue areas and added some white dry brushed onto the wave peaks and into the wake. I put a coat of gloss medium over it all. The ship is placed temporarily just to assess the look

I need to work on the bow wave next but I think its coming together. I think the foil under the toilet paper worked well; there are nno dead flat places on the sea surface. Thanks Craig.

I added some rust around the bow area , anchor and anchor chains and I think that is the model complete.

I used the Vallejo Foam Effect water texture sparingly on a few of the wave caps and the bow wave. I tried to avoid the temptation to go wild with the stuff. Its not really foamy more like a thick white paint. I used a cocktail stick to apply it.

I need to work more on sea scapes and dioramas in general but I really enjoy doing then.

Thanks to everyone who contributed with tips and information. Thanks for looking in

Thank you for the kind comments OC. It was an enjoyable build and I like the sea base. She now resides on my book case; well lit and next to my reading spot.

what glue did you use for the case?

Hi Mike

Sorry for the slow reply; I've been a bit all over the place in the last few days. I used an acrylic cement to build the display case. Its a solvent that welds the parts together and has no adhesive properties in its own right so its easy to clean up - it just evaporates with no apparent residue. The only downside is it will mar the acrylic sheets if there is a drop accidently spilt on it. Like plastic cement.

Its very low viscosity so its applied letting capillary action draw it into the joint. Joining pieces need to be well fitting as it can't cope with gaps. It can be applied by running a hypodermic full of the cement along the joint but I find it don't have enough control and I would rather run a paint brush along the seam and work a bit slower.

Hi Mike

It does not cause clouding of the plexiglass / acrylic sheets like CA glue does. It dries completely clear in the joint. The only danger is if you spill some on the sheets. It will soften the sheet and if you try to wipe it off you will mar the surface. The best option is to leave it horizontal so it doesn't run and just let it evaporate.

I really enjoy the sea bases but I still have a lot to learn. I would like to do more but they increase the size of the finished model too much to make it a routine finish.
