HMS Winchelsea 1764 by westwood - 1:48

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,
the first layer of wales is done and I've started painting the gunports.
I'm not at all sure if this is a good red.
It's this one: Vallejo Cadmium Red Medium
Wouldn't it be better: Vallejo Cadmium Red Deep
Unfortunately I can't get a better picture of it.

What do you think?

There is only the first coat so far.

I used Cadium Red on Cheerful, it looks great. There is no best color other than the one you like. Personally I like RED.

Hola chicos,
la primera capa de Gales está lista y comencé a pintar las portas.
No estoy del todo seguro de si este es un buen rojo.
Es este: Vallejo Cadmium Red Medium
No sería mejor: Vallejo Cadmium Red Deep
Desafortunadamente no puedo obtener una mejor imagen de él.

¿Qué piensas?

Solo queda la primera capa hasta el momento.

Hey guys,
I haven't made a post in a long time, even though I've been working almost every day.
I also bought Cadmium Red Deep and I like it more.
The third time I painted the gunnports with a mixture of 1part Cadmium medium and 2 parts deep. Unfortunately it doesn't show up well in the pics.
In real it looks better. But when I do the inner planking I will experiment more.
I may end up using only Cadmium Red Deep.

Thank you for the nice comments and for the likes guys, it always encourages!

On the starboard side I glued the first two strakes below the wales.

Maybe I'll add 1-2 more strakes to make it sanding smoother .

But before that - Lining of the Hull.

And then I'll add a second layer of wales, what I'm looking forward to it.

The second layer and paint makes it look so much more like a ship. Fun stuff😊

Your planking looks great.

Linning off the Hull ...

only a few pictures,
Thanks to Chuck's tick strips, I only needed to make slight adjustments.

But surely a constant check during the planking will be necessary.

Before I started the second layer of wales I glued one  strake as I planned.

Lovely planking so far.  Just watch the planking over the first three bulkheads as you work your way lower.  I see many people start to develop a dip there that will look like a dent in the hull in the lower two belys.  Try and correct this if you see this developing.  And absolutely turn the hull right side up to check this.....its the only way to really tell for sure.

Thanks for the likes guys,

some photos for Easter...
I added the anchor lining and after the final sanding of the second layer of wales I used a Fiebings Leather Dye stain.
I like it because it is beautiful to see the texture of the wood.

But the processing was difficult.

Maybe I was too hurried because after finishing the planking there will still be a lot of sanding to be done,
and then I'll apply one more final coat and then add the Black strake at last.
And on top of that will be applied liquid wax. (that is the plan for now)
Test:

That looks really good, I think the dye is a much better way to go than black paint. I will definitely be using that next time.

Your build is looking great! I might suggest you consider a matte or even satin finish, the high gloss of the liquid wax might be a bit much on a model as large as Winchelsea.  Just a thought.

Hey guys, I haven't made a post in a long time
because all my energy has been directed towards planking...

reply to the wax, in that one photo it's freshly applied and it gives the look of gloss.
I also prefer a matte or satin look.
But this point is still too far, I can't wax continuously otherwise I wouldn't be able to glue on the waxed surface anymore and that's a bit of a disadvantage compared to wipe on poly.

So I finished the first belt, this is what it looks like
