Any tips on adding aftermarket Hasegawa wooden decks to a plastic model kit?

Hello all!

 

I will soon begin on the Hasegawa 1:350 Mikasa, and was wondering if anyone could direct me to a resource, or let me know about adding the wooden decks to it?

 

Do I need to scrape away the molded deck? Or does the adhesive simply go over top of it?

 

Any info would be a great help, and thanks in advance!

Have you looked into builds in the kit area?   Many, not just the Mikasa, use aftermarket wooden decks.  What I've observed while not having done a plastic ship model is decades, is that many of the molded bits have to be removed as aftermarket parts (PE usually) replace them.

The last one I did was the Missouri. I didn’t remove any deck detail. I glued it down with watered down PVA.

I am currently building a 1:200 Mikasa and am incorporating a wooden deck, which I will be starting on sometime in the next couple of weeks. The answer to your question depends on the wooden deck upgrade you are working with. I am using the upgrade kit from Pontos that also involves a lot of other photo-etch parts. The wooden deck in this upgrade kit has a self adhesive backing, but I understand you can alternatively use glue. In my case, there are many embossed protrusions on the plastic deck that first have to be removed before applying the wood deck.

Doesn't the Hasegawa deck instructions tell you whether you need to cut or sand away the plastic details?  I had good instructions on sticking on the linoleum deck appliqué on my Hasegawa destroyer.

Thanks for the advice; I agree, many of the original plastic parts will need to be cut away or replaced, but I'm just not sure if  have to remove the molded deck as well.

Hey LLM! I'm sure you're right about cutting some of the deck details away... but did you simply stick the wooden decking onto the molded deck surface? Or did you chisel away every 'slat' that was molded into the plastic?

For the linoleum deck, there were raised lines for the brass deck hold downs.  The Hasegawa instructions specifically said to scrape those off (translation in the instructions was a bit wonky), so I went ahead and did so.  That seems to be a different situation than a scribed deck where for the most part, the deck is fairly smooth with just slight indents.  I suppose if your instructions don't say anything, you can lay the wooden deck on top just to get a sense as to whether it would make the deck too high?

 

Here are the instructions for the linoleum deck - maybe your deck instructions have something similar?

Just pulled up the instructions for the Hasegawa Mikasa deck.  Doesn't seem to say anything, but I noticed it says the deck is 0.25mm.  My guess is given how thin it it (seems as thin as a sheet of paper), you're probably ok putting it right on top of the existing plastic deck.
