I had a third cousin, Oliver Coyle Sr., who was a Seaman First Class aboard the Sammy B. He is listed on the roll of survivors at de413.org. He passed away in 2011. The last Sammy B survivor passed away in March of this year at the age of 98.

You must be very proud of your cousin, from the accounts of her actions that day they must of known they were not going to be sailing home from that battle.  History is full of the big battleship names and histories ( Hood, Bismarck, Yamato, Arizona), but the inspirational stories come from the little ships, the ‘workhorses’ of every fleet that toiled and often sacrificed without fanfare or memorial.

For there's who don't know or aren't familiar.. here's the Wikipedia article on the battle:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_off_Samar.  The unit was known as Taffy 3.   The men on those ships were indeed heroes.

Never met him actually, but I thought it was pretty amazing when I discovered that out of all the navy ships he could have served on -- all those support ships, troop ships, tugs, and other types that performed valuable service but are now largely forgotten -- that he served on one of the immortals.

Another excellent choice are the two books by Byron Como, The Defenders of Taffy 3 and the Raiders of Taffy 3. Very well researched and written, at least in my humble opinion.
