Picked up this beautiful kit from my new friend out of Montreal. @rshousha Rick has had this model on the shelf for the past 10 + years and wanted to find someone who would take her to completion. I have accepted that challenge and so, here begins the rest of the story. Here she is received into my home safe and undamaged via international shipment. After a close inspection 🧐 I found that time had not been kind to her deck. My first order of business was to remove Rick’s wonderfully installed deck furnishings and fittings to restore and finish the decking. I used Minwax color match filler to close the gaps and fine sand the finish. I then cut in the scuppers and hause holes. Prepared the hull for a few more coats of paint. Drew the waterline and masked to paint from the waterline up. And then waterline down… Ready for some more sanding and then a few coats of clear ploy to give her a nice shine. My kids had a look at those early pictures I sent you and we figured the model was started closer to 2003 or 2004 than ten years ago! One of my daughters, who is about nine in the pictures, is now twenty-eight. We're all happy see the model is in good hands! Perhaps it would encourage others to get partially-built models out of their closets and on to builders who are ready to go. I think it would create a lot of new friendships. John Ruy Posted January 5, 2023 Author Share #9 Posted January 5, 2023 Finishing the Hull… I am using the above photos as my guide to finishing the hull of this impressive sea-faring yacht. I really want to get this right. 🧐 After 3 sanding and coats of paint, the final fine sanding is complete and we are ready for striping prior to the clear coat. Water Line striping completed… I am going to have to create my own lettering decals for the stern and bow. She is coming along. Bow markings and yellow striping. Stern markings… @rshousha Rick’s beautiful deck planking with its first coat of semi gloss poly. I’ll probably do another coat or two before I clear coat this hull. Ever since I built that, I have wanted to create a proper king plank to make decking construction even more precise and realistic. The water slide paper and acrylic sealer are readily available and MS Word has every font and word art to creat the decals. Vinyl Pin-Striping is a great way to add the striping, as well. I added felt pads to hold her hull. I could not bring myself to permanently attach this stand to this hull. Mahogany Rail… First coat of Polyurethane on short bulwarks and rail. It will need another coat or two. rshousha Posted January 18, 2023 Share #24 Posted January 18, 2023 (edited) Hi John, Well done on the rail! This is one of the parts that stopped me in my tracks when I was building the model. I learned a lot about Corel instructions with that model. The instructions put you in a false sense of security, "attach part 1 to part 2, then part 3 to part 2, then part 4 to part 3" and on and on. You are quite sure the order is good until you get to "attach part 116 to part 3"!!! and it's almost impossible. I did another Corel kit after this one, and I planned ahead a lot more and things went well. The Corel plan sheets are very nice but, in general, the instructions need to be used more as a guide. I would love to see other models get taken out of moth-balls and completed by people who have the time, the energy, the skills, and the interest. Also, I imagine so much money can be saved by builders who have the skills but just don't want to spend that kind of money on a kit. And imagine how much stuff can be kept out of landfills. It's not Lego! Hi Rick Agreed… Building the rails aren’t even mentioned in the instructions. I personally have not found any good instructions with the exception of Model Shipways New Bedford Whaleboat. That kit came with a book that was a build log of the prototype. It had very good instructions with photos it was written by the kit designer. That’s where I was able to improve my wood modeling skills. Most of these kits just aren’t assembly type model kits. I consider our “hobby” an art form some experience required. That’s why there are so many unassembled kits out there on eBay and in closets. Thanks for the opportunity, this kit is definitely challenging my skills. Unfortunately part 47 is 1.5 mm ply and the Rail is 2mm x 4mm solid mahogany. As seen here I will need to laminate the 2x4mm Mahogany to create this curved section of rail. The Rail or Planksheer as it is called out on the Corel Drawings and instructions, is now finished.
