MARK -  I'm planning on treenails (simulated) above the wales.  But first I have to find the mettle to lay that first plank. :)

Great start on the planking Augie.   And what a bonus to have Chuck dropping by with such timely and sage advice.  This is going to be a real beauty!

 Augie,

I really like how you think through everything you do. What a great group of contributors. I really like the simplicity of the plank bending jig. I'm taking notes all the way!

Thanks Jax.  But right now I'm more worried about the curve on the bottom of the counter where the hull plank ends fall.  There is a sort of pattern on the plans that I transferred onto that section and started sanding away.  I'm just bringing in the planks from the lower wales so using them for a guide at the same time.  Think I have it right.  I'll get a photo up once I have a few planks laid and flowing smoothly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Time for the promised update !

Planking has begun.  I've begun at the channel wales and am working upward toward the chain wales.  The planks are basswood.

You may recall that we laid out the sweep ports using a supplied paper template.  As we begin planking, it is necessary to notch some of the planks to accommodate these ports.  Here's a notched plank ready to be laid:

Here's where we are after laying the first 8 rows:

Both the port and starboard sides are at this point.  All of the individual planks are scale length (25-30 feet).  The channels themselves will be double planked after we get all the way up to the cap rail.  I haven't  broken out the belt sander yet to level things out :D  :D .

After the next few rows we'll be notching out for the gun ports.

Probably be a good week or more before the next update.  She's a lot bigger than I thought.

Very nice start to the planking Augie, from the picture it looks like you got the run dead on.

Yep - she's a big un alright, took me a few months to do all the outer planking but I work much slower than you!

Thanks everyone!

Yes Popeye --- I'm having a blast.  And Ben is right ..... it has to be 'all ahead, slow' at this point.  Beats flank speed....backwards!

And don't fret Andy --- this log runs on auto-pilot.  If things get out of control 'we'll fight them on the beaches, we'll fight them in the air ....'

And Robbyn-  There's always room for you at my table!

Hey Augie

I like the way the planking started above the sweep ports and is notched to include them. It breaks the natural line the eye tries to establish when looking at something repetitive and linear. It slows the track of the eye down and forces it to take a longer look, taking in more detail. You're doing beautiful work my friend :)

Thanks Bill.  Probably see the same thing up on the gun ports. She tells you what to do.

With an eye like that, I'll bet we're going to see some first rate work on both your current Phantom and future Confed.  :)  :)

Planking above the wales continues.  It'll be slow going for the next week or so as the 1/8 x1/16" basswood planks need to be notched around (a lot) of gun ports.  For those of you facing something like this in the future, here's what it looks like:

I only use hand tools.  Here's a photo of a finished notched plank ready for placement.  The overall length represents about 22 feet @ 1:64.  The plank is laid on the hull and marked for the ports.  The notches are made with the chisel, the corners squared with the square file and everything cleaned up with 220 grit sandpaper stuck on an old file (the same width as the outside of the gun ports including a small relief).  Sometimes the wood gets pretty thin in the notched portion so be prepared to lose one every now and then.

Now here is that plank glued in place.  I use PVA here to allow some time for adjustment.

post-56-0-66054600-1384794381_thumb.jpg

The process is actually a lot of fun but it does require patience (not my strong suit).

Hope everyone in the Midwest made it safely through the tornadoes.  I'm finally going to get my road heading West up into the mountains opened this week.  Been 7 weeks since the flood.  They did a helluva job since the original prediction was to open for Christmas.

All stay well!

Jeez that is one teeny little chisel you have there..  Think I'd have to go lie down in a darkened room for a bit after using that little fella :) :)

Looks really nice. I wonder if if would be worth trying what Chuck did on his Winchelsea build... (You remember?) with the planks that widen under the gunport sills? Just a thought...

Andy

Have to confess Andy....I didn't remember.  I love his Winchelsea but haven't really kept up with her.  Sounds like a reasonable approach.....but first you need some wider planks.
