So far so great Augie! For me the planking is definitely NOT the easy part but you're handling it beautifully!

Hey Augie,

Those wale lines have a real nice flow to them. That's a long hull, those lines either make or break the beauty of this ship :). Wonderful work, I'm taking notes :) :) :)

Greetings Augie, may I ask what, if any, power tools you have used on this project?

Thanks, Harley

The only power tools I have are an old Dremel and a pencil sander.  Never really got into that aspect and at my age I'd be dead before I ever learned how to use them properly.  My wife of over 40 years is convinced 'there is something wrong with you'  :)

Thanks, I'm in the same boat so to speak, coming up on 41 years on a marriage to my best friend and she wants to buy me something for the shipyard.

Maybe I'll just get some upgraded lumber.

Augie - I can't even count the number of times my lovely wife has come out to my little shop, looked at me in my jeweler's specks pin filing something 6mm long and used the exact phrase "There's something wrong with you." LoL

Glad to hear there are still some 'old-schoolers' out there.  Nothing wrong with good power tools though --- especially if you're making a jump into scratch building.

Upgrading your timber is a good investment Harley.  It's a little expensive and hence, in the long run those tools pay for themselves.  As they say.....whatever floats your boat!

Yikes!

And yes, for a landlocked state CO is well represented. I'm a return visitor from before the MSW 1.0 crash and a 20 year Air Force guy trying to blend with sea fairing folk . ;-)

Sorry we hijacked your thread Augie!

Time for a small update.

The treenailing of the upper hull is completed.  I used the 'drill and fill' method using a #74 bit and wood filler that I dyed with acrylic paint to the color I liked.  It's not as aggressive a pattern as specified on the plans but it suits me.  Once that was done, another coat of diluted Minwax Golden Oak stain was applied and everything given 2 coats of WOP followed by an application of brush on Testor's Flat Acrylic.

post-56-0-84967100-1389117248_thumb.jpg

Now it's time to finish the painting on the upper hull.  Everything from approx. 2 strakes above the gun ports up to the rail will be black.  Wish I had a scale roller :) .  Probably take about 8 coats.

Be back soon.

Beautiful work on the nailing Augie, looks top notch!..... I'm with you on the power tools. I've bought a couple which I never use, and probably will never use. I'll end up selling them someday, although, recently I did buy the Proxxon DB250 wood lathe that I'm sure I'll put to some use, other than that I'm pretty much old school, hand tools, sometimes I get carried away with this hobby :P :P (  at my age I really should know better)

nice work on the nailing Augie.  How do you do that without staining the underlying finish?  my attempts on scraps produces  a vriation of permanent stains.

Hi Augie, Very nice pattern. It’s not too busy and trying do all of those treenails can lead to pattern errors.

Not that I would know about that nope no way. Oh and about downward facing bumkins  you mentioned

in B.E.’s Pegasus log, in case you didn’t know you will be making them too.

Thanks all!

FRANK -  you're not THAT old!

Bob-  Not as neat as yours but I'm getting there

Rusty - Thanks for the good news!  But then I'm pretty handy at making supposedly straight things curved (not to mention my patented 87 degree right angle)

John -  That planking was stained, then drilled/filled and then re-stained.  Does that clarify????

Have to agree with everyone.....looking great. I think you may have some patent infringements on your hands - I may have used that very 87 degree right angle myself. Then there's the 93 degree right angle

Thanks Augie, that's a good common sense answer.  I've discovered that also with glue stains.  They don't show up until the stain goes on....then the stain doesn't penetrate....gotta try to sand it or live with it .....depends on where it is I guess.  Thanks.

Hm.... can't believe I've never stained first then drilled and re-stained. That would sure cut down on the amount of "missed glue discoloration" of which John speaks!

The only problem with it is that, with basswood, the drilling is not so clean as with a harder wood.  Even though I smoothed out the drilled holes (gently) with an awl, the second staining gets into the edges of the drilled circle and gives a slightly diffused appearance.  I can live with that as the overall appearance and texture look pretty good from a normal viewpoint.  If you'd like to see the difference, check out Bob's (Rafine) treenailing on his Essex.  Absolutely 'clean'.

Yes Augie, I run into similar problems when I try to shape the basswood in any way.

And Bob's Essex is definitely one of the builds I currently follow (and drool over). :-)

Very excellent work Augie, I am not looking forward to the treenailing part myself, I find it the most tedious process of all the building.

I think basswood is good if you're going to paint it or cover it up with copper, past that to me it is just really too soft to hold a lot of detail, even though I didn't spend the $'s to change it out on mine.  I should have, but .......
