Lovely work and great tutorial on the hooked scarfs.   Enjoy the globetrotting....  will there be fishing involved?

Thanks everyone for the complements and bon voyage.  Have a few days left before leaving.

Mark - sorry, no fishing.  Just going to be a tourist.

JP  - belt sander has been around for years.  Actually one of the low end models from Micro-Mark.  Nice part is that there is no vibration so it makes it possible to do some fine work.

Wow Augie, that deck looks superb, such a shame it's going to be partially covered.

It will however compliment the reining decks and deck furniture, you have set the bar higher yet again, I just wish you would have a thought for us mere mortals.

It's time to close down the shipyard and head 'Over There' on vacation.  Keep a lantern aglow in the stern galleries so we can catch up to the Fleet again in mid-October.

I wish everyone smooth sailing and good progress in the interim.  Leave me lots of catching up to do when I get back.

Fare thee well, mates !!!!

Just went through this log and was extremely impressed.

One request:  On pages 52-55, the photos are not viewable.  I think this was a bug in MSW.  I'm interested in the planking process with or without spiling.

Would it be possible to fill in those photos?

Great job!

Enjoy your vacation.

Thanks to all for the good wishes.

Ken ---- thanks for the kind comments.  On the missing photos, yes, it was an MSW glitch.  Unfortunately, I didn't save the photos this time around so I have no way of replacing them.  However, the process is well detailed, with photos, in the instruction manual for Confederacy which can be found at the following link from Model Expo:

http://www.modelexpo-online.com/images/docs/MS2262/MS2262-CONFEDERACY-Instructions%20-%20WEB.pdf

It's a long download.  The specifics you're looking for are on about pages 46-52.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've received several PM's on how the spiling/edge bending jig I presented is working at the bow. In response, I've taken a few photos that I'll present here.

Let me state that this is not to be taken as a tutorial . It is simply how I do it.

You should remember what our bent/spiled planks look like after drying in the jig detailed by Chuck:

C-106.JPG

The forward tip of the plank is beveled to fit securely into the rabbet. Then, the tip and about 3/8" of the side of the plank contacting the adjacent plank above it are glued securely in place. It needs to be completely dry and tight as it will take some stress in establishing the bow curve of the plank. I use thick CA to do this as it is strong and easy to control:

C-107.JPG

A different view just to show how unusual it looks at this point. The blue tape is just there to protect the finished wale:

C-108.JPG

The loose end of the plank is now gently bowed and lightly twisted into position and glued flat to the bulkheads. Notice that the tendency to lift at the lower edge has been defeated:

C-109.JPG

Finally, the plank is glued to the remaining bulkheads:

C-110.JPG

Granted there are some irregularities but these should be mostly eliminated with careful sanding. Laying this plank took about 15 minutes (not including the spiling/bending/drying time).

Overall, I'm pleased with the technique. Hope this explains it!

Good to be back!  But from the looks of it I'll be reading for the next month to catch up to you all.  Thanks for all the good wishes ---- and the lantern!!!!

Checked in on Confed  and she looks fine but it will take a week to get back to the shipyard.  Glad I have this log to remind me where I am.
