Glory of the Seas by Rwiederrich - Medium clipper 1869 (discontinued in lieu of new log)

Jumping ahead...here is a comparison of images of the Glory in 1900 and my version.  I thought it was interesting.

Back to the build.  I finished the bow and head gear first..since it was easist and I like to complete things in as small projects..so the entire project moves along faster(well at least if feels like it moves along faster)

Well...back to the build....

I was finishing up with lots of small details on the poop deck, aft and installing the anchors.

 

Here is the forecastle and anchor storage.

At this point I set the masts.....

Another of the set masts........I then went about setting and rigging the stays to secure the masts in place.

Now it was time to rig the shrouds along with the stays.  I began this task by starting on the mizzen and working forward.

I proceded to apply the ratlines in an orderly fashion...begining with one mast(mizzen) and working forward..then the tops and then back to the mizzen and then repeating the procedure...will they were all siezed in.

I finished the starboard side first and will soon begin the port.  I typically do things in a routine order and in small pieces so as to give the illusion of completing things fast.

I'm just curious... how long did it take you to get this point?   It's a fascinating project as we don't often see clippers other than the Cutty Sark in the model world.

She is looking perfect. I espescially like the carvings and details on the stern.

Mark......Well..It took me 3 months to build the Cutty Sark and with all the mods on this ship..I have in around 3 months of work currently.

Daniel..thanks....carving a small woman figurehead was daunting  to say the least...but I think I captured the idea. The scroll work on the cheeks was also carved and was fun.  Since there are no models of this particular clipper...everything was scratch built from line drawings and lots of study.

 

When I finish her...I'll begin the work on another Donald McKay creation...the Donald McKay.  She had some of the first gangways installed on clippers to give better axcess to the seamen.

 

My modles are not as detailed or skillfully executed as some are on these pages...but I enjoy them and I'm having fun.

Very interesting and innovative approach and methods - with great results. A fine looking model Do you alter the shape of the hull or accept the Revell shape?

I was really pleased to read these words   "...I work in multi mediums to achieve my goals...and am not ashamed to admit...I will re-engineer anything and everything to achieve these goals....." I think this point bears repeating. I understand and salute the ship models that show some sort of "purity" of materials but I think it can go too far sometimes. For instance I wouldn't think it was fair to exclude a mixed media ship model from a juried competition on the basis of a given models list of ingredients. Why can't a navy board model be made of cheese? It shouldn't be held against it if it is. I think of ship models as works of art and I often use the quote " in Art, the ends justify the means".

Thanks Ed...I appreciate that coming from you.  Yes I alter the hull shape as far as I correct the shape of the bow and stern to replicate the model I am building.  As far as the Glory is concerned...her cutwater was much steeper and her deadrise was shallower then the CS.  I didn't go into details as to how I corrected that but so far is to say..I re-engineered a hull to my liking and specs.  The more noticeable items such as deck houses...height of bullworks...forecastle and poop deck design  and mast composition are all modeled after the prototype and scaled line drawings and deck/rigging drawings were utilized. Such as is your manner of building.  Just not as profoundly accurate in actual structural detail of the hull construction.

 

A knowledgeable inspector would easily know my model was the Glory of the Seas..based upon her above water details.

Frankie......I admit...I'm not a purist in the greater sense of the word...but I do want accuracy and scale.  However, if wood, plastic, paper, medal, wax, clay, etc. can be skillfully used to achieve my goals...i will surely employ them.  I paint and weather my models so.....a multitude of sins will be covered up...shall we say.  Once complete..I feel the final goal has been closely achieved.....getting there is part of the fun...and if I used a kitchen pressure cook pot as part of the process so be it.

What I find fascinating about the Glory of the Seas is that she had an extremely varied working life span.....for 54 years she existed among us...born as a rich fast medium clipper...one of the last of her kind...living gloriously, then dying an undignified death in a funeral pyre.....not far from where I live.

Historical significance played a great part in my selecting her as my next composite build. Photographic historical documentation is limited but varied..and lent greatly to the success of my build, apart from scaled line drawing and sail/rigging plans...I would have found this build most difficult.

Thanks Elia.  Yes I build everything out of wood above the planksheer.  The hull can take so long when you build it from wood(Plank on frame)...so I skip that and heavily modify a 1/96 Revell CS hull....making all the necessary cutwater changes and stern changes.

With that done....the real fun begins in bulwark mods and deck houses and furniture.

I'm trying to finish my CS mod of the Portuguese Ferreira.....before I begin finishing the Glory..

Since there is Not much interest in my kind of build and since I am building 3 ships at the same time....Ferreira, Glory of the Seas, and now the Donald McKay.  I will slack off on the Glory...while I finish the Ferreira...and begin on the hull and water for the McKay diorama....I'll just let this build log go dormant for a time.
