rwiederrich Posted October 21, 2013 Author Share #63 Posted October 21, 2013 Well Ed...this is the trick. I model, making the most corrections as stated earlier(Stem/stern). Namely the bearing lines are corrected and such.. As far as the depth of the hold is concerned and the flatness of the bottom...I opted to go with the Revell design. Nobody I know would ever know the slight difference in bottom flatness between the two anyway. But most importantly, is the design of my dioramas many of the ships I build are set in. The Glory was a generally flat bottomed design unlike the CS..however that slight error is generally lost to the general observer... Where as the major(below waterline differences) are disguised by the modeled water I set my ships in. No below waterline changes will be made for my Donald McKay build..since she will be modeled in a heavy sea with those differences hidden by design.. The real modifications come above the waterline. The Ariel..My Glory of the Seas and....the masterfully built Lightning. And not to forget..the several logs of the Cutty Sark. I think this is the most clippers represented in quite a while......and it also appears that 2 *Donald McKay's* will be entered the Frey in the future as well. What fun to see such a diverse collection of clippers.....wooden merchant ships of this period where built for a specific reason...*Speed*. a short but mighty career. Great forum. rwiederrich Posted November 27, 2013 Author Share #71 Posted November 27, 2013 (edited) A bit more history of the Glory of the Seas: She was built in 1869 and had a successful and varied career..which extended over 53 years..far beyond many of her contemporaries. She did not end up wrecked, or set afire by accident , or lost do to foundering. She lived to an old age and as many old sailing ships, was passed from one profit making toiling job to the next...and each less honorable and dignified then the previous. Nope...an old salty girl who ran her life's course to where she had no more profit to give. Once nearly saved from the wreckers hand by a preservation society that turned out to be nothing more then a sham. Parts of her found themselves in private collections...a ship model was even fashioned from her state room door. Her Figurehead was saved by a wealthy passerby and is now saved and on display in the India House club in NY. She was driven ashore on a marbley beach at Endolyne, South of Seattle...and in 1923 was burned for the metal in her hull. As of 4 years ago at low tide you could still see remains of her if you have a keen eye(I personally plan a trip there soon to attempt to recover a souvenir, if at all possible to be honorably displayed next to her model. I have found(in my collection) another quite rare image of her on that beach south of Seattle.....taken the day before she was burned...as you can see her beautiful figurehead has already been removed and saved for posterity. I am tackling the logistics of such a modified build...... It will require 3 Cutty Sark hulls and ample hull modifications. The McKay will(Like my ferreira build) be an open water diorama ...where the hull below the waterline will be unseen...there for no mods will be needed. I kinda feel like Ole Donald McKay myself with the anxious anxiety of a new build fogging my view...long before I have finished the ship I'm currently working on. After working on the clipper Donald McKay for a time...and finalizing a home move...I finally spent some quality time rigging and fitting out the Glory of the Seas foremast yards. To include lift rigging, jackstays, Flemish horses, stirrups and footropes. Before I affix them to the mast...I must return to finishing the port side foot ropes. I spent much of last night rigging them on the shrouds. I intend to fashion the Jacobs ladders as well during this stage. It appears I have created for myself a nightmare(If such can be considered to be so). I'm on the brink of finishing ....totally...the Barkentine Ferreira ...(aka Cutty Sark). few odds and ends. I'm a third way through the mast construction on the Clipper Donald McKay. I'm slinging along on the mainmast yards and backstays of the clipper Glory of the Seas. And... I'm laying the deck for the new construction on the clipper Western Shore. I forgot to take images...so I'll try that soon. I was able to go to the pyre site of the Glory of the Seas.....and at an extreme low tide..did indeed find the remains of my favorite clipper ship. I then excavated several portions of the iron pins used to fashion the timbers together(No timber survived). These iron pins were roughly 1.5" and some over 3ft long. I procured several portions..one crusted nearly fully and the rounded form head was barely visible. Being nearly 100 years old....they are brittle and after preservation I will mount them along with my model of the vessel. 8 years ago there was more to be found...she is nearly completely vanished from view and from memory. I saved my piece of the *Glory* and can't be any more excited. I have an actual piece of the Glory of the Seas and it will rest proudly and preserved with the model of her namesake. (Made entirely of wood), mine is of a composite nature. I use all medium to complete my ships.
